NXT went off the air ten minutes after AEW Dynamite, and it used that time to air a very special moment featuring the return to TV of Tomasso Ciampa.

The first round of the Wednesday Night War has come to a close and honestly, we can't pick a winner. Both NXT and Dynamite featured great matches, wild returns, and cameo appearances. If there was any doubt from fans that either side wasn't capable of putting on a captivating show when it needs to, those doubts were well and truly laid to rest last night.

On NXT, one of the show's main attractions was its NXT Championship match, a bout that kicked off the show. Matt Riddle earned the right to face Adam Cole by beating Killian Dain in a brutal Street Fight last week. Riddle might have survived Dain, but he couldn't defeat Riddle. His wait for gold in WWE will continue.

Cole's night wasn't over after defending his title though, not by a long shot. Right after the match, the leader of Undisputed ERA was confronted by a returning Finn Balor. However, it would seem that Balor will have to get in line if he wants a title shot. That's because the man who never really lost the title also made a shock return to the show, Tomasso Ciampa.

NXT purposefully overran by about ten minutes, meaning anyone watching Dynamite will have likely switched over to catch its ending. And it was an ending worth catching. Cole came back out to celebrate UE's successful Tag Title defense, and Ciampa cut him short, entering Full Sail to a deafening reaction from the fans. It seems as if NXT's Black Heart has returned, and he wants his title back.

Although it feels like Ciampa has been gone forever, it's actually pretty miraculous that he has managed to recover from neck surgery this quickly. The former champion has been teasing his return ever since NXT went live two weeks ago. It makes sense that Triple H would save him for the first night up against Dynamite. Not only that, but he saved him for a spot in which he guaranteed as many eyes as possible would be on the show.
