Tomasso Ciampa Still Isn't Sure Why He Was Called Up Earlier This Year

No one ever explained to Tomasso Ciampa why he was called up from NXT to Raw and SmackDown earlier this year.

Tomasso Ciampa's 2019 has been quite the rollercoaster. Early on in the year, Ciampa was called-up from NXT to Raw and SmackDown along with Johnny Gargano, Aleister Black, and Ricochet. That call-up was brief and brought to a screeching halt when Ciampa had to step away for nine months in order to undergo and recover from neck surgery.

When Ciampa returned, it was to NXT, not Raw or SmackDown. However, the black and gold brand had changed drastically during his time away. It had moved to the USA Network, doubled in runtime, and now broadcasts live every week. The Blackheart of NXT has returned to being at the center of attention at Full Sail and has made it clear that he wants to be NXT Champion once more.

As for why he was called up in the first place, Ciampa recently revealed on the State of Combat podcast that it was never explained to him. "Sometimes, there are spots that need to be filled and you just have to be at the right spot at the right time," Ciampa said regarding the reasoning behind his and the other three call-ups that happened at the same time.

Ciampa's hypothesis is that it was the run-up to WrestleMania and there were simply spots that needed to be filled. However, even the three Superstars who remained after his injury didn't have prominent spots on the biggest show of the year. Gargano even returned to NXT himself after Ciampa was sidelined. In all fairness, WWE was selling Gargano and Ciampa as a tag team at that time.

Ciampa's first call-up coming to a quick and unexpected end might have a few silver linings. It has meant NXT has one of its most valuable assets for the biggest evolution in its history. It also means Ciampa will have the chance to be champion again, a title he relinquished rather than legitimately lost. Before all of that, however, the black and gold roster has WarGames and then Survivor Series to look forward to.
