With the long, lonely road trips away from home and the close proximity among staff, it’s no surprise how many hook ups happen. I spent a year working on cruise ships, and there’s no better aphrodisiac than the combination of boredom, loneliness, and being homesick. Of course the wild nights that can easily come with cruise ship life and being a wrestling superstar definitely speed up the process.

Anyone who works away from home for the majority of the year creates a new home on the road. There are home relationships, and ‘road’ relationships, and they quickly become of the same importance. Traveling non-stop creates an ‘us against the world’ mentality. When you are constantly in a new place, the people battling with you quickly become your closest friends, lovers, and enemies.

The WWE loves to capitalize on the appeal and tension of real-life romance. After Randy Savage and Elizabeth had already been married for quite some time, Vince had them re enact their vows for SummerSlam ‘91 in a “Match Made in Heaven”. Of course, in this version’s gift-opening, the wedding party was interrupted and brutally attacked by a snake-in-a-box and The Undertaker smashing an urn into the grooms skull. Macho Man and Elizabeth were truly dedicated to the wrestling business and even carried on pretending to be married long-after their real-life divorce.

The awkward Hardy-Lita-Edge triangle was also used for ready-made TV fodder. Culminating with the very non-PG “live sex celebration”. It may be acting, but when based so closely on real-life happenings, it can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Behind the scenes is where the real action is happening. In today’s internet age, rumors and photos fly at the speed of light. Shoot interviews and twitter accounts are used with reckless abandon, and almost nothing is sacred. Not to mention the books wrestlers write, exposing the past for a chance at the best-seller’s list.

So let’s dive in and take a look at the swirling rumor-fest of WWE backstage affairs!

This list will include both rumors that turned out to be true or ones that were just that, rumors.

10 10. Batista and Melina

Dave Batista seems to have enjoyed his time in and especially out of the ring. Before the big man became a Hollywood star, he enjoyed a few of the WWE's heavenly bodies.

It's rumored that when Melina was split from John Morrison, her and Batista had their own thing going on. But it wasn't just Melina that Batista has been linked to.

You can add Rosa Mendes and even Kelly Kelly to his list.

The big guy seems to have a way with the ladies.

9 9. Sable and Brock Lesnar

Sable broke into the WWE as one of Triple H’s beautiful valets but was actually married to Johnny B Badd, Marc Mero. After their split, she was quickly to another wrestler, Brock Lesnar, and married him a couple of years later, living happily ever after with two kids to boot.

Not too much is known about how these two got together as the Beast loves his privacy. I like his style and wish more celebrities and paparazzi would embrace privacy.

8 8. Miss Elizabeth and Luger

A tragic end to this story.

After her divorce from Randy Savage, Elizabeth eventually ended up in WCW and involved romantically with Lex Luger. This relationship stayed serious and continued until her untimely passing. Luger has opened up about the dark times leading up to her death.

“People say, 'well Lex, you didn't make her drink or shove pills down her throat,' but I was a very big influence on her life at the time and I was doing that and she wanted to do what I did.”

The wrestling world mourned the loss of the true First Lady of Wrestling.

7 7. Randy Savage and Stephanie McMahon

This is an urban legend that has been around for 20 years and refuses to die. The legend being that a teenaged Stephanie and the much older Savage had some kind of sexual relation that was discovered by Vince. Savage’s relegation to the broadcast table, and his eventual move to WCW fueled this fire.

Even top wrestling scribe Dave Meltzer seemed to lean towards belief. "When I first heard the story I didn't believe it because I thought it was just some story, but then, and I mean even when people who are very high up in that company, after they left the company, would tell me that story I still didn't believe it, but, you know, after a certain number of years…”.

The good news is that Randy Savage’s WWE legacy will be preserved as it takes its rightful place in the Hall of Fame.

6 6. Tammy ‘Sunny’ Sytch and Shawn Michaels

Must have been an intense combination when the WWE’s ultimate bad boy and girl got together. Sytch has admitted to this one herself (as well as another we’ll get to), bringing this rumor to life.

Around this time Michaels also dropped the “Sunny days” remark in a promo directed at Bret Hart, suggesting the Hitman had also been involved with Sytch. While Hart and Sytch never actually got together, the accusation alone caused friction in Hart’s marriage and added to the major heat already brewing between the two superstars.

Although they were never romantic, Sunny still got to learn Bret's secret Hart family handshake!

5 5. Sunny (again) and Davey Boy Smith

In an interview detailing her WWE love life, Sunny suddenly remembered another wrestler she had hooked up with a few times: The British Bulldog!

Tammy described the late Davey Boy Smith as one of her best friends that she just happened to hook up with here and then. She stated it happened after the Michaels relationship as well, and suggested that it probably caused even more friction between Michaels and the Harts.

Just like her name, Sunny herself said she was a “major source of heat”.

4 4. Karen “Angle” Jarrett and Jeff Jarrett

There’s an interesting Youtube interview with Kurt Angle talking about his then-wife Karen getting involved with the wrestling business. He spoke about being happy that she was coming on the road with him and that she was really taking to it. He called her the “mother hen” for the boys, as she would help organize everyone and fill in where needed.

The interesting part is Kurt saying that Karen would give the other wrestlers massages, and that she spent a lot of time having fun with the girls when he would prefer to spend time with her. Kurt when on to say it would have no effect on their marriage and that they were stronger than ever.

The comments sound a little odd now as they would eventually divorce, with Karen remarrying TNA’s Jeff Jarrett.

When Jarrett and Karen televised a segment featuring their home and family life on an episode of TNA, Angle took offense and took to Twitter.

“The 'Jarrett' segments on TNA Impact were appalling. It made me look like a deadbeat Dad which I am not (I can assure you). And it made Karen and Jeff look like the perfect American Family. MY kids were calling Jeff 'Daddy Jeff'.

"NOBODY will ever replace me as the Father of my kids. You want me to look like the bad person? Don't forget who wanted the divorce! I didn't walk away from my family, Karen did. So keep your little 'act' going on TV. It's amusing to me, but don't think for a million years that my fans are buying this crap."

Angle’s right, oh it’s true, it’s damn true

3 3. Stephanie McMahon and Triple H

Joanie Laurer and Paul Levesque were in an established relationship while working together at the WWE. But during a storyline that had Triple H paired up romantically with Stephanie, it’s alleged that the pair developed real feelings for each other. Seeing them married today with children makes it pretty obvious this was true. Joanie had some cutting allegations for Levesque that she broadcast on Vince Russo’s podcast.

“I think Hunter’s plan was to get me to leave the relationship first. That way he could start dating Stephanie and everything would be cool. We got into a heated argument. We were not getting along. I told him ‘I know something’s going on; don’t tell me something’s not going on.’ He swiped my hand, I swiped his hand, and then he hit me. And that’s a dealbreaker for me. The relationship is now over. After that I know that he was crying, and I know that he felt bad that he hit me. I was just in shock; it felt like a Jerry Springer moment, it was very surreal. I just couldn’t believe that he hit me.”

Laurer got the rough end of the deal as the WWE has kept their distance, specifically not inducting her to the Hall of Fame (that includes Koko B. Ware).

2 2. Matt Hardy, Lita, and Edge

Hardy and Lita had a legitimate relationship as a very likeable couple. The two hardworking “alternative” stars were loved by fans and had enjoyed a great relationship. But things change.

During an injury that kept Hardy at home, Lita and Edge had become quite close working together on the road. This eventually blossomed into a relationship, leaving Matt on the outside looking in.

The WWE infamously used this real-life drama as a storyline (as they love to do), with some very awkward segments and fans chanting to Lita “you screwed Matt”

Hardy is the forgiving type and has mentioned many times since that he has the utmost respect for Amy Dumas. Bygones!

1 1. John Cena and Mickie James

via wehearit.com

Kenny “Dykstra” Doane alleged that his then-girlfriend Mickie James had an affair with ol’ Super Cena. But Doane didn’t stop there. The allegations included at least one other Diva at the time.

Apparently James was breaking one of the rules of being famous, and googled herself. When Doane saw “Mickie James dating John Cena” he confronted her. “She stared at [the computer] for like legit two minutes and I'm looking at her like "Did you forget how to read? Say something, WTF." She got up and ran into the other room crying saying she was sorry and she felt bad and admitted to it."

Doane had a sizeable rant about Cena’s alleged exploits. "Got one diva who is married to a guy outside of the business but she sleeps with Cena, then we got Cena who sleeps with rats and this married diva, and now my girlfriend."

Doane alleges the Cena-James affair resulted in his eventual termination from the WWE. If that’s true it sounds like Cena completed his heel turn a long time ago!
