A New Era has taken over WWE and with it comes tons of great developments. Shane O’Mac is back. Many of the great ones from NXT have been brought up to the roster. SmackDown is now live on Tuesday nights. Perhaps the biggest of them all, Monday Night RAW and SmackDown Live have drafted WWE superstars exclusive to their brand. With Stephanie McMahon being in charge of Monday Night RAW and Shane McMahon being in charge of SmackDown Live, a competition between the two brands is meant to take place. RAW and Smackdown are to compete to see which brand was better, who can get the higher ratings, and which has the better commissioner. But what has it really done? Absolutely nothing.
Since the brand split, viewership has been fluctuating for both shows. The ratings have not experienced dramatic increases as hoped. As for the fans, well, let us just say that it is distressful not seeing some of our favorite WWE superstars in the ring together.
The brand split has denied the WWE universe some great rivalries and storylines.
Below are the top 15 feuds we are missing as a result of the WWE draft. As always, please feel free to comment below or on social media if you disagree or think of any other worthy matches that belong on this list.
15. Baron Corbin vs. Cesaro
Cesaro has made it no secret that he would have preferred to have been drafted to SmackDown Live. His wrestling skills would have not gone to waste as it has on Monday Night Raw. His four out of seven bouts against Sheamus has been stale and dull. What would make a good battle though would be the Swiss Superman versus Baron Corbin. Corbin has the power that Cesaro displays every night he is in the ring, making the fight pretty fair.
Both are winners of the Andre the Giant Battle Royal as well, showing they are not forces with which to be reckoned. Both superstars put on pretty decent matches and it would be crazy for them not to face each other to see who is dominant.
14. Neville vs. Apollo Crews
Recently on Monday Night RAW, the WWE debuted the Cruiserweight division. This match was spectacular in every way and had the crowd chanting, “This is awesome.” The WWE universe loves to see all the high flying and flipping stunts and perhaps no greater match would showcase that than one between Neville and Apollo Crews.
Since Neville debuted in March of 2015, the fans got behind him instantly. They loved the man that gravity forgot. Apollo Crews has not received a similar reaction from the fans since debuting in April of 2016. He has been viewed as rather boring. Regardless of that, both his and Neville’s moves are very exciting to watch. Putting them in the ring together would be nothing short of breathtaking . Considering Crews is not getting the kind of reverence the WWE has hoped, a match against Neville would be perfect to get the crowd really behind him.
13. Bray Wyatt vs. Finn Balor
Finn Balor does not always wrestle as the Demon King, but when he does, it is a scary sight. This is why a match against Bray Wyatt would only be fitting. Bray Wyatt is perhaps one of the most terrifying superstars on the roster today. Wyatt is the self proclaimed face of fear, and there was no one really on the roster to dispute that. Putting these two in a match together would not only send chills down the spines of the WWE Universe, but would determine who is the true face of fear. Balor’s fast paced style will balance out Wyatt’s slow pace, giving a fairly balanced and exciting match for the fans to witness. Balor’s injury is not what is preventing this feud, the brand split is.
12. Owens and Jericho vs. Ambrose and Cena
The alliance between Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho has been funny and entertaining. It is surprising that they have not formed their own tag team, well, before Owens won the WWE Universal Title. It would have been enjoyable to see them go up against two men who have a similar dynamic.
Though Dean Ambrose and John Cena are not aligned with each other, they have worked as a successful tag team a few other times. There were a few amusing bits while they were feuding over who gets to face Seth Rollins and they had a competitor/partner coalition thing happening. It was entertaining enough to put them against the same kind of relationship in Owens and Jericho. Even if it was only one match, it would be a match that would be enjoyable enough to get the fans chanting.
11. Kalisto vs. T.J. Perkins
Okay, so let’s get this straight. Kalisto is the most exciting cruiserweight on the roster and with the WWE having planned to bring a Cruiserweight Division to RAW since July, they put Kalisto on SmackDown? Kalisto would have been the obvious choice to be in the Cruiserweight Classic, then bring the title to RAW. While the WWE has plenty of cruiserweights on RAW, the mainstream RAW audience has no familiarity with any of these guys yet. Kalisto has been on the main roster for a year and having a familiar face kick off the division as champion makes more sense.
An immediate possibility would be for Kalisto to feud with current Cruiserweight Champion T.J. Perkins. The two would absolutely tear the house down on Monday nights.
10. Enzo and Cass vs. Bray Wyatt and Rowan
Okay, so you are probably a little confused about this one, but just hear us out. Bray Wyatt is known for his cryptic messages to the WWE superstars. He is known to leave many of the superstars and fans with the feeling of confusion. That is where Enzo and Big Cass come into play.
Enzo and Cass are The New Era’s New Age Outlaws. They have both the mic and ring skills to back up what they are saying. They are perhaps the funniest WWE Superstars today, so you can only imagine what they would have to say to the Wyatt Family. The promos on this rivalry alone would be worth seeing this. Wyatt would come out with one his bewildering promos and Enzo would come back with something utterly hilarious. If he was able to get the fans to chant “soccer mom” to AJ Styles, just imagine what he would concoct for these bizarre looking men.
9. Bayley vs. Natalya
There is no question that Bayley is extremely talented. She and Sasha Banks broke ground with their thirty minute Iron Man (woman) match at NXT Takeover: Respect. She is one of the best technical wrestlers the women’s division has seen in a while. That is why she should go against the best female technical wrestler the WWE has had in Natalya. Bayley was added to the RAW team in August, while Natalya is on team SmackDown Live. It seems as if the WWE does not know what to do with Natalya anymore, which is again why a Bayley vs. Natalya match could call for Natalya’s retirement. Bayley would be the best for that considering she would be the most evenly matched with The Queen of Harts.
8. Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens
Orton went against Owens on an episode of Monday Night RAW in July of 2015. The match was interrupted by Sheamus who Brogue-kicked Orton. Kevin Owens was very new to the major league roster at that point and though he was still a great wrestler, he has evolved even more since then. The WWE Universe deserves to see this rematch considering there was no real winner in the first match. Owens has developed into one of the best heels the WWE has seen in awhile, and Orton…well, Orton has been great for some time now. Both are ruthless and RKO vs. KO would be a performance that would get the fans on their feet, that is, if they were both in the same brand. The WWE universe awaits.
7. Nikki Bella vs. Sasha Banks
When the Divas revolution started in 2015, Charlotte was brought to the spotlight while Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks stayed in the background. This was a bit ridiculous to begin with since the fans took an instant liking to Sasha Banks due to her work in NXT. Charlotte was the one who went up against Nikki Bella for what was then the Divas Championship. The one match Sasha had against Nikki was with team BAD in The Boss’s corner and Team Bella in Nikki’s corner, which ended with a distraction and a win for Sasha. Now that they are both solo, and Sasha showed us exactly what she is capable of as a singles competitor, while Nikki came back even better than she was before her neck injury, this match can be yet another amazing divas match.
6. Ambrose vs. Reigns vs. Rollins
Okay, so yes, we have seen a Shield triple threat match before at 2016 Battleground, but that was it. A shield triple threat match was in the making ever since Seth Rollins turned heel and betrayed his brethren back in June of 2014. The anticipation of it was building up for a while, yet the fans had to wait two years before seeing it. All of that hype for just one match is simply not fair. It was one of the greatest matches of the modern era, yet the WWE felt that once was enough. Another Shield triple threat match would not only be exciting, but would be a great way to introduce the idea of The Shield reuniting. Too bad they are on different brands.
5. Reuniting The Shield
Okay so The Shield reuniting is not technically a match, but it is what fans have also been waiting for since the betrayal. The timing could not be any more perfect for it as well. Rollins has turned face, Reigns has been showing his monstrous power, and Ambrose, well, Ambrose is still the unfringed one. The WWE Universe has gotten a trace of hope when all three members triple powerbombed Orton through an announce table in a fatal four-way match. They again saw some hope recently when Rollins came out to fight Owens as he was helping Rusev attack Reigns. A reunited Shield would be even better than the previous version since each member has evolved as a singles competitor. They can still compete for singles gold, but could also be the most powerful trio the WWE has seen.
4. Bray Wyatt vs. Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar and Bray Wyatt had somewhat of a rivalry going earlier in the year, and what did we get out of it? A handicap match — Brock Lesnar versus Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper at 2016 Roadblock, a match in which Bray Wyatt did not even tag in. The match was originally going to be just the two, but plans changed at the last minute since the WWE wanted to wait until after WrestleMania 32 for this brawl to take place. How long did they plan on waiting? Now, Lesnar is a part-timer on RAW and Wyatt is a full-timer on SmackDown. It sounds like the WWE should have taken the chance when they could have because now a rivalry is close to impossible.
Supposedly the WWE could pull an interpromotional match, but it likely won’t be for a while, with Lesnar already having done one with Orton.
3. John Cena vs. Finn Balor
Imagine, the best of the old and the best of the new battling it out to see which generation is superior. That is what you would get if you have a match of John Cena versus Finn Balor. John Cena has mentioned before that the New Era is dawning in the WWE. He also stated that the future of the WWE must go through him to take his place. This would be the perfect opportunity for John Cena to call it quits and Balor to take his spot. A match between The Demon King and The Face That Runs the Place can result in Cena’s loss and therefore his retirement, and who better to do that than one of the best to have come up from NXT?
2. AJ Styles vs. Finn Balor
The best two to have recently come to the WWE are AJ Styles and Finn Balor. They have similar wrestling styles and the fans love them. Even with AJ Styles being a heel, the fans still chant his name because they know talent and excitement when they see it. Considering all that, why is the WWE not putting these two in the ring against each other? Oh, that’s right, it’s because Finn Balor got drafted to Monday Night RAW and AJ Styles was drafted to SmackDown Live. The match between these two would be, as AJ Styles would put it, “phenomenal.”
The battle could easily be the greatest match of all time, especially since these two are not the best on the mic yet. Instead, they can let their in-ring skills speak for themselves.
1. Seth Rollins vs. AJ Styles
Seth Rollins and AJ Styles are arguably the best in the game right now. It would be a no-brainer to put these two in a feud together. AJ Styles and Seth Rollins have a similar way of wrestling. They both do those high flying stunts and they both have some heavy duty kicks. They both have a big fan base behind them as well.
The fans did get to see a glimmer of this match at some live events that were not televised, but in a triple threat match. In Jackson, Mississippi, AJ Styles and Seth Rollins went against each other as well as Roman Reigns. In Bridgeport, Connecticut, it was a triple threat with those two and Dean Ambrose.
Rollins himself said he would like to feud with AJ Styles. As to when we can actually see this, who knows now?
