The WWE has used the concept of love many times in its storylines. When it comes to telling a tale, love works. People enjoy the follies of romance. The new couplings and all the drama that lie in wait. Quite simply, love affairs are a go-to angle in WWE.

Often times, the love storyline is an unexpected pairing – a couple who we would not envision together. Other times, the pairing is that of two pretty people placed together for the purposes of entertainment and perhaps a sense of realism. There is also the case of placing actual couples together in on-screen roles which has also been done numerous times by WWE.

However, today is not about real life. The realities can wait, or be seen here, as we dive into the cesspool of WWE fiction. This article will take a look at some of the on-screen couples that we have loved, hated, or were disgusted by over the years. The 'strictly working relationship' type of relationship.

Throughout our list you will discover some controversial couples as well as some sweethearts turned sour. There will be those that were comedic and those which were downright strange. This list will also include tales of betrayal because what love story doesn't involve a little backstabbing?

For the purposes of our list: we have excluded any real life couples who have taken their sincere romance from behind the curtain to the forefront of the squared-circle. We do recognize that some of these real life couples have also become some of the best on-screen couples in WWE. Therefore, we will take time to provide some shout outs:

Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, Matt Hardy and Lita, Edge and Lita, King Booker and Queen Sharmell, Macho Man Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth – all of these couples have provided great entertainment on WWE television. However, let us turn our attention back to our fake courtships.

These are the top 15 on-screen WWE couples:

15 15. Mike Knox and Kelly Kelly

The WWE version of ECW didn't exactly provide fans with the extreme element we were all so hopeful about. Instead, the brand was produced much like any other WWE show thus eliminating any alternative feel.

However, what the new ECW did provide for the fans was a young woman by the name of Kelly Kelly – a beautiful blonde whose initial gimmick was that of an exhibitionist. Week after week, Kelly would perform a striptease for the crowd in a segment called “Kelly's Expose.” Of course, she was never able to complete her routine thanks to her on-screen boyfriend, Mike Knox, who would constantly interrupt the segment and cover up Kelly.

Mike Knox is a bit of a forgotten superstar but his pairing with Kelly Kelly was solid. This may upset some of the guys but consistently taking Kelly away from their gawking stares made for a good angle.

14 14. Spike Dudley and Molly Holly

When I think of the relationship between Spike Dudley and Molly Holly, the first thing that comes to mind is Stone Cold Steve Austin standing in the ring with the couple, bad-mouthing Molly, and then delivering a stunner to the defenseless woman.

This led to little Spike Dudley defending the honor of his girlfriend and taking on the big and mean Stone Cold, an angle which went over well as it displayed a lower card guy working with the biggest name on the roster.

Spike Dudley and Molly Holly were the tiny underdog couple in WWE who you just had to root for, even though you knew they were in over their heads.

13 13. X-Pac and Tori

X-Pac and Tori were the result of a broken friendship and betrayal of a woman. X-Pac had formed a tag team with Kane. Meanwhile, The Big Red Machine had a budding romance with Tori – life was suddenly a lot better for Kane who had always been a social outcast.

Then one day, everything went awry when X-Pac turned his back on Kane and revealed that he had stolen his girlfriend. Subsequently, this would spark a feud between the ex-partners as X-Pac would rejoin his buddies in D-Generation X while welcoming Tori into the heel faction.

When Tori was sidelined with an injury, she was not seen on television for months until a one-off appearance which saw her slapping X-Pac across the face for not providing her with protection – effectively ending any relationship that remained.

12 12. Santino Marella and Maria

What do you get when you pair together a doofus and a ditz? You get Santino Marella and Maria – an oddball on-screen WWE couple with a comical connection. The relationship between Santino and Maria even led to the second ever beer truck hose down courtesy of Stone Cold Steve Austin.

During the course of their relationship, Maria had been chosen to be the next WWE Diva to grace the cover of Playboy magazine – much to the chagrin of Santino. During the unveiling of her cover, Maria's big moment was ruined when the enlarged picture was plastered with images of Santino.

Needless to say, Maria would not be hanging around Santino for much longer, as she would soon split from Santino and be on her way.

11 11. Randy Orton and Stacy Keibler

Leading up to WrestleMania XXI, Randy Orton was working as a face character. In the months prior, Orton had become the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history while being banished from Evolution.

This new side of Randy Orton would also see him become involved in an on-screen relationship with Stacy Keibler. However, the cuddly side of Randy Orton would not last very long. The Legend Killer would set his sights on The Undertaker and putting an end to his undefeated streak at WrestleMania.

In the process of building this match, Randy Orton would abruptly end his relationship with Stacy Keibler by giving her an RKO in the middle of the ring. Orton would justify his actions as proof that he is willing to be ruthless in order to defeat The Undertaker.

10 10. Billy and Chuck

This next on-screen couple were at the center of plenty of controversy during their time together. Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo known simply as Billy and Chuck were not just presented as a tag team but as life partners.

The duo were set to wed on air during an episode of SmackDown but the commitment ceremony was interrupted by 3-Minute Warning when it was revealed that the priest who had been officiating the wedding was really Eric Bischoff in disguise.

This storyline would bring heat on WWE from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation who were consulted about the angle and were said to have been promised that the on-screen marriage would indeed occur.

9 9. Test and Stephanie McMahon

Once upon a time, Stephanie McMahon was the innocent, perhaps slightly naive daughter of Vince McMahon. There was nothing vindictive or vicious about Stephanie, she was just a nice young girl from Connecticut.

When the on-screen relationship between Test and Stephanie McMahon turned into a storyline engagement, it seemed as though WWE was about to find its fairytale couple. That was until Triple H showed up at the ceremony and revealed that he had already married Stephanie McMahon in Las Vegas while she was unconscious.

This of course was all part of an elaborate plan pieced together by Triple H and Stephanie in order to exact revenge on Vince McMahon. Obviously, with Triple H in the picture, Test would become obsolete in Stephanie's life.

8 8. Tajiri and Torrie Wilson

The Japanese Buzzsaw, Tajiri, and the two-time Playboy magazine cover girl, Torrie Wilson, are definitely one of the more unforeseen couples on our list. Nevertheless, they were an on-screen couple for a while back in the early 2000s.

However, when you have a girl like Torrie Wilson on your arm, jealousy is sure to ensue – which is exactly what happened with Tajiri, who was soon infuriated with the attention Torrie was receiving from other men on the roster.

The envious ways of the international superstar would eventually lead to his storyline split from Torrie Wilson.

7 7. Kane and Lita

Another odd pairing came in the form of Kane and Lita – who certainly became an interesting on-screen couple during their storyline together. This angle would place Kane against Matt Hardy in a match where the winner would be the man to marry Lita.

When Kane was victorious and an on-air wedding would take place where Kane and Lita were bound in matrimony. This would all lead to a pregnancy and eventual miscarriage and the introduction of a new character named Gene Snitsky. The whole thing was a little bizarre.

The relationship between Kane and Lita would end when she sided with Edge, who at the time she was involved with in real life.

6 6. Christian and Trish Stratus

The on-screen relationship that developed between Christian and Trish Stratus stemmed from a “battle of the sexes” storyline which pitted Chris Jericho and Christian against Trish Stratus and Lita. However, when Jericho developed real feelings for Trish, their romance would blossom.

Then WrestleMania XX rolled around and Chris Jericho was set to do battle against Christian, with Trish Stratus firmly in his corner... or so he thought. That night, Trish Stratus would turn her back on Chris Jericho and align herself with Christian, as a new storyline couple within WWE.

The pair of Canuks were great heat seekers as a heel couple and feuded with Chris Jericho for the months that followed.

5 5. Mark Henry and Mae Young

The Attitude Era was a time for experimentation and unconventional wrestling storylines. One of those storylines happened to produce a now infamous segment in which senior citizen and former female wrestler Mae Young gave birth to a human hand.

The father of this hand was supposed to be Mark Henry as Sexual Chocolate and Mae Young had been involved in an on-screen romance. The pairing of Henry and Young was a strange and unfamiliar angle in the wrestling world but that's what made it work so well.

There are those who have long criticized the hand birth, but Mark Henry and Mae Young were as entertaining a couple as there have ever been in WWE.

4 4. Edge and Vickie Guerrero

Edge and Vickie Guerrero

“The ultimate opportunist,” Edge has made a career on knowing when to strike. Having cashed-in two Money in the Bank briefcases at just the right moment and knowing how to get what he wants through manipulation and maneuver has made him one of the WWE's finest.

The on-screen relationship between Edge and Vickie Guerrero was another scheme used to further the career of The Rated-R Superstar. Edge would occupy the World Heavyweight Championship for much of their romance, as Vickie was the active General Manager of SmackDown and positioned to made Edge's life much easier.

These two were yet another unlikely couple but had great chemistry and came off as amazing heels. The crowd hated Edge and Vickie and that was a good thing.

3 3. Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee

Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee were once romantically linked in a WWE storyline. The angle would place AJ in a starry-eyed style position and insinuated that her feelings towards Bryan where much strong than any feelings he was experiencing.

When Daniel Bryan was World Heavyweight Champion, his darker side was exposed and AJ was not spared, as she was constantly told to “shut up,” kept being placed in harm's way and was blamed for anything bad that may have occurred with Daniel Bryan.

The most unforgettable part of the Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee relationship was the kiss at WrestleMania XXVIII which led to Daniel Bryan losing the World Heavyweight Championship in an eighteen second match.

2 2. Eddie Guerrero and Chyna

The on-screen couple of Eddie Guerrero and Chyna was certainly weird at first but over time, the fans began to love the odd pairing as the overwhelming charm of Eddie Guerrero would take the storyline farther than anybody thought.

While the relationship only lasted a few months, it presented Chyna in a new light – one of which WWE fans had never seen before. Eddie Guerrero was naturally great, as he usually was in any angle he was working, and all-in-all, the couple were fun to watch.

The relationship ended when Chyna discovered Latino Heat cooling down in the shower with two other women.

1 1. Vince McMahon and Sable

One of the classic female feuds from the SmackDown brand involved Stephanie McMahon and Sable, who at the time was portraying the on-screen mistress of her father Vince McMahon.

This was another crazy McMahon family storyline which involved an unfaithful husband in Vince McMahon, a heavily sedated wife in Linda McMahon, and a daughter bent on revenge in Stephanie McMahon – and all the while, a mistress named Sable was caught in the middle of the family crossfire.
