Choosing to become a professional wrestler is a path in life that most people would never consider, not even in the slightest. It is a job that can promise no rewards and guarantee pain. It is something that your friends and family may frown upon. They may even mock you in the process for deciding to take on such an unusual profession.
The life of a wrestler is a life full of bumps, bruises, broken bones, unrest, unease, and uncertainty. The road is long and paved with heartache. The obstacles are plenty and the pay can be next to nothing. There is no sane reason to become a professional wrestler which is what makes them so interesting. In the wrestling world, normalcy is non-existent.
The road quickly become home for these wrestlers as they lay their heads down in different cities every night. The only thing they know is performance. The only people they know are their fellow wrestlers. The only other people in the world who can understand why they take on this kind of lifestyle. The only other people who can truly appreciate its appeal.
This is why so many wrestlers end up falling for each other. The commonplace of their environments leads to attractions and distractions. The wrestling crew is almost like a traveling high school. There are relationships that form and often end before weary eyes are met just to begin all over again. Such is the way of the wicked wrestling cupid, dressed in boots and trunks.
There are of course success stories of love and wrestling. The couples who have survived all the miles and mayhem. Their stories may not be as juicy or as chaotic as some of the other turbulent tales of wrestling relationships gone wrong but sometimes you just need to hear about the good things. The things that work out and the people involved who are happy together.
In this article we will take a look at some of that love as we countdown the top 15 real life wrestling couples …
15 Cody Rhodes and Eden
Cody Rhodes (real name: Cody Runnels) and Eden (real name: Brandi Reed) became husband and wife in September of 2013. Reed who now serves as ring announcer for both Superstars and Main Event was first brought into the company as an announcer for NXT. Runnels, who had already been with the WWE for a while first hit it off with Reed in “The Show Me State” of Missouri while on the road and passing through St. Louis. While Reed continues to develop her WWE career, Runnels, who has gone through several gimmicks may have finally found his niche as Stardust – tag team partner of his brother Goldust (Dustin Runnels).
14 Mike Bennett and Maria Kanellis
You may remember Maria Kanellis best for her days in WWE and the ditzy Diva persona which she portrayed. She has since moved on to the independent wrestling circuit, primarily ROH (Ring of Honor) where she manages her real life husband, Mike Bennett. If you have never heard of Mike Bennett it may be due to the fact that he has never worked for any major promotion. Bennett is what's known as an “internet darling.” Whether or not Kanellis will ever return to WWE is uncertain. Perhaps if her husband is ever given the opportunity to work for the company she will tag along for the ride.
13 Cesaro and Sara Del Rey
Cesaro (real name: Claudio Castagnoli) and Sara Del Rey (real name: Sara Amato) are one of the lesser-known wrestling couples on this list but are both impressive in their own rights. While they have not garnered as much attention as other wrestling couples, Castagnoli and Amato are both comfortably employed by the WWE. Castagnoli is one of the most naturally gifted performers on the main roster – it's too bad that WWE has not used his talents to the fullest but he is still strongly featured on their programming. Amato who made a name on the independent scene is not a member of the Diva's division but a trainer in NXT where she helps develop up-and-coming female talent.
12 The Miz and Maryse
The Miz (real name: Michael Mizanin) and Maryse Ouellet were married in February 2014 and currently reside in Los Angeles, California. Ouellet is no longer with the WWE but during her run did manage to capture the Divas Championship on two separate occasions. Mizanin, a former WWE Champion himself, remains an active part of the roster and is currently playing the part of a delusional movie star gimmick. Ouellet has gone on to pursue other endeavors such as fashion and real estate while her husband has become one of the most socially active superstars in WWE.
11 Jimmy Uso and Naomi
Jimmy Uso (real name: Jonathan Fatu) and Naomi (real name: Trinity McCray) were married in January 2014 and are one of the couples featured on the WWE hit reality show, Total Divas. Fatu along with his twin-brother Joshua (ring name: Jay) are one of the most exciting tag teams in WWE and are apart of the Anoa'i family – a renowned Samoan-American wrestling dynasty which includes The Rock and Roman Reigns (cousins) and of course their father Solofa Fatu, better known as Rikishi. McCray made her debut on the main roster as one half of The Funkadactyls but has since moved on to singles competition. The future remains bright for this young couple.
10 Natalya and Tyson Kidd
Natalya (real name: Natalie Neidhart) and Tyson Kidd (real name: Theodore Wilson) have known each other since they were kids. Wilson who was the final graduate of the legendary Hart Dungeon had befriended Teddy Hart and Harry Smith (grandsons of Stu Hart) at the age of ten, subsequently meeting Neidhart through his connection to the Hart family. The couple began dating in 2001 and were married in 2013. Their marriage was featured on the first season of the reality show Total Divas. Unfortunately for Wilson who is an established wrestler, he can be seen more on the E! Network than any major WWE programming.
9 Matt Hardy and Reby Sky
One of the most infamous relationships in professional wrestling was the pairing of Matt Hardy and Lita (real name; Amy Dumas) which ended in dramatic circumstance. However, Hardy moved past it all and is currently married to Reby Sky (real name: Rebecca Reyes), an independent female wrestler who Hardy helped trained. The couple have had their share of problems and in January of 2014 were arrested in Virginia following a domestic dispute. This prompted the pair to file restraining orders against each other but they have since reconciled. Hardy has seen some darkness when it comes to love and family (his brother Jeff has dealt with his own legal troubles). Nonetheless, fans of The Hardy Boyz wish them all well.
8 Shawn Michaels and Whisper
Shawn Michaels (real name: Michael Hickenbottom) and Whisper (real name: Rebecca Curci) were married in 1999 at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hickenbottom is of course one of the most well-known performers in professional wrestling as well as one of its single greatest talents. However, Curci is not a household name and her involvement in the wrestling industry is not of any major significance. However, she was in fact involved with wrestling for a short period of time. From 1997-1999 Curci was employed by World Championship Wrestling as one of “The Nitro Girls,” whose main focus was to entertain fans during the commercial breaks of Monday Nitro. Hickenbottom and Curci reside in Texas with their two children where they live a humble and spiritual life.
7 Edge and Beth Phoenix
Edge (real name: Adam Copeland) and Beth Phoenix (real name: Elizabeth Kocianski) have both retired from professional wrestling. Copeland due to medical reasons and Kocianski for family reasons. Even though the couple have respectfully stepped away from the WWE limelight, they both managed to accomplish a great deal during their time there. Copeland is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame and a former eleven time World Champion. Kocianski is a former Divas Champion and former three time Women's Champion (title now defunct). In December of 2013, the couple welcomed their first child into the world.
6 Brock Lesnar and Sable
Brock Lesnar and Sable (real name: Rena Greek) first met in 2004 shortly after Greek's divorce from former WWE superstar, Marc Mero. The couple quickly got engaged only to call it off in early 2005 before getting engaged again in 2006 and eventually married. Greek who is ten years Lesnar's senior has retired from professional wrestling while her husband is the current WWE World Heavyweight Champion. Both Lesnar and Greek serve as step-parents to children they have from previous marriages. The couple currently has two children of their own and reside quietly in Minnesota.
5 The Undertaker and Michelle McCool
The Undertaker (real name: Mark Calaway) and Michelle McCool (real name: Michelle Leigh) were married in June 2010 at a ceremony in Houston, Texas. Leigh is the third wife of Calaway as he is also her second husband. It has certainly taken the pair time to find each other and despite a fifteen year age gap, the couple remain in wedded bliss. Leigh is seemingly finished with her wrestling career while the future for Calaway remains unclear, especially following his epic loss at WrestleMania. Should Calaway choose to never wrestle again, he is already set financially and will always be remembered as one of the best ever. This couple will be just fine without the wrestling business.
4 Daniel Bryan and Brie Bella
Daniel Bryan (real name: Bryan Danielson) and Brie Bella (real name: Brianna Garcia-Colace) were married in April of 2014, just weeks prior to the crowning achievement of Danielson's career when he won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the main even of WrestleMania XXX. Garcia-Colace who is one of the main stars of Total Divas is heavily featured throughout the series as her marriage to Danielson is one of the focal points of the show. The reality show has recently depicted the couple as having financial problems, which seems entirely unrealistic considering Danielson's status in WWE (even though he is currently recovering from injury). Garcia-Colace herself is a top Diva in the company. Therefore, one could assume that their “troubles” are simply produced drama.
3 John Cena and Nikki Bella
John Cena and Nikki Bella (real name: Nicole Garcia-Colace) are yet another couple who are featured on Total Divas. However, unlike her sister and Danielson who are socially aware and environmentally friendly, Nicole and Cena live a more lavish and high-profile lifestyle which includes and is not limited to; fancy cars, expensive jewelery, and multiple houses. Dating the biggest name in the industry today definitely has its perks, as well as drawbacks. Cena has often times ruled out the possibility of marriage and children as a result of past romantic failures and his hectic career schedule. Whether or not this relationship will last is yet to be seen, but for the time being the couple remains in tact.
2 CM Punk and AJ Lee
CM Punk (real name: Phillip Brooks) and AJ Lee (real name: April Mendez) were married in June of 2014. This couple has been one of the hottest topics on the internet, as the love for Brooks and interest in his personal affairs still runs rampant since his abrupt departure from WWE in January of this year. Brooks was quite possibly the best wrestler to emerge from the current WWE product and his wife Mendez, who is the current WWE Divas Champion, can actual wrestle as well – something that is far too often overlooked when booking the Divas division.
1 Triple H and Stephanie McMahon
Triple H (real name: Paul Levesque) and Stephanie McMahon were married in 2003 and have since had three children together. The couple are the future of WWE and are set to take over the business when Vince McMahon decides to step down from his post. Levesque, whose understanding and passion for the business runs deep, already holds a significant amount of power within WWE and it will be interesting to see where the future of the business is heading with his and Stephanie's vision at the forefront.
