Over the past 15 years or so there have been several tag teams that have held championships in the WWE, whether that be the WWE Tag Team Championships, World Tag Team Championships, or any other names the titles have been given. Some great teams have held onto these titles for a long time like the current champs, The New Day.

Other tag teams have not been so great, and have had short lived runs and won the titles under questionable circumstances. Some wrestling fans believe that anyone who wins a championship must be a legit wrestler, but there are those who certainly don’t think that is the case. The following 15 teams managed to win some type of tag team championships in the WWE, whether or not they deserved to.

15 15. The Prime Time Players

Lots of wrestling fans can’t even remember who the last WWE (Raw) Tag Team Champions were before The New Day, but that team was Darren Young and Titus O’Neil A.K.A. The Prime Time Players. The Players beat The New Day to win the titles at Money in the Bank in June 2015 but lost them back to The New Day at SummerSlam in August 2015 in what was a fatal four-way match with The Lucha Dragons and Los Matadores. The Prime Time Players were a popular team but their success did not last long. They got into a short feud and even reunited which didn’t last long either. Young is now under the tutelage of WWE Hall of Famer Bob Backlund and the pair both competed on NXT.

14 14. The Basham Brothers

If you don’t remember The Basham Brothers, Doug and Danny, you may think they were just glorified jobbers based on their name. These guys actually held the WWE Tag Team Championship twice. Their first reign came after their defeated Los Guerreros (Eddie and Chavo) in October 2003, before losing the belts to Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty. The Bashams won the titles again in January 2005 when they won a four watch match against champions Rey Mysterio and Rob Van Dam, Eddie Guerrero and Booker T, and Mark Jindrak and Luther Reigns. The Basham Brothers were members of JBL’s The Cabinet and served as his Secretaries of Defense. They lost those titles to Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio in 2005. The Bashams competed in TNA in 2007.

This pairing of Edgeheads defeated John Morrison and The Miz in July 2008 at The Great American Bash to capture the WWE Tag Team Championship in a fatal-four way match that also featured Finlay and Hornswoggle and Jesse and Festus. At that time they became the youngest tag team champions in WWE history. The team lost the belts to the Colons, Carlito and Primo, in September 2008 on SmackDown in their first televised title defense. Hawkins wrestled in TNA and on the indy scene before rejoining SmackDown in 2016 and held the TNA World Tag Team Championship with Trevor Lee. The team of Deuce and Domino won the WWE Tag Team Championships from Paul London and Brian Kendrick after beating them in a non-title match and then losing their match at No Way Out in 2007. They eventually won the belts in April 2007 on SmackDown, but lost them two weeks later to Matt Hardy and MVP. The team had an interesting look and was managed by Cherry. Deuce is the son of Jimmy Snuka and never had a successful career as he moved to the independent scene. Domino competed in OVW, Ring of Honor, and Global Force Wrestling. This was a case of a team having a cool gimmick and getting a push but not being able to do enough with it. The fact their neither guy succeeded on their own shows that they should have stuck together as a team.

11 11. Right to Censor - Bull Buchanan and The Goodfather

The WWE had an interesting idea when it took a stable of wrestlers and put them in goody two-shoe roles, but kept them as bad guys. Two of those guys were The Goodfather and Bull Buchanan. Fans were upset that The Godfather left his old ways behind and straightened up his act. They won the WWF Tag Team Championships from The Hardy Boyz, Matt and Jeff, in October 2000 on Raw. They then lost those titles to Edge and Christian in a fatal four way match with The Dudley Boyz and Road Dogg and K-Kwik at Armageddon in December 2000, making them transitional champions in between two of the greatest teams in history. The Godfather was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame and also wrestled as Kama and Papa Shango and held the Intercontinental Championship.

The Hart Dynasty was supposed to be like a second coming of The Hart Foundation. The duo of David Hart Smith and Tyson Kidd was even managed by Natalya Neidhart, and won the World Tag Team Championships from ShowMiz, Big Show and The Miz, in April 2010 on Raw. This team had potential but didn’t live up to it and their titles were deactivated in August 2010 to make way for the new WWE Tag Team Championships. Tyson Kidd also held the WWE Tag Team Championships with Cesaro. He was injured in 2015 from taking a muscle buster from Samoa Joe and sustained an injury that left Christopher Reeves a quadriplegic. David Hart Smith has been wrestling in Japan and won the GHC Tag Team Championship in Pro Wrestling Noah with Lance Archer.

The team of Too Cool, Grand Master Sexay and Scotty 2 Hotty, were actually better at dancing and being cool than they were at wrestling. Somehow they managed to win the WWF Tag Team Championship from Edge and Christian on Raw in May 2000. They lost to the same team the next month at King of the Ring in a four way elimination match also featuring The Hardy Boyz and T&A, Test and Albert. Scotty also held the WWE Tag Team Championships with Rikishi, who is a Hall of Famer. Sexay’s is the son of Jerry “The King” Lawler and is also known as Brian Christopher, who held the USWA Heavyweight Championship 26 times. Back in 2002 the man best known as Val Venis used his real name of Sean Morley in the WWE and was appointed the Raw Chief of Staff by General Manager Eric Bischoff. In January 2003 the team of William Regal and Lance Storm won the World Tag Team Championships on Raw after losing them the night before at the Royal Rumble. The titles were vacated in March when Regal suffered an injury, so Chief Morley decided to award the championship to the duo of himself and Lance Storm. They ended up losing the belts to Kane and Rob Van Dam. Storm was a four time World Tag Team Champion with Christian, Morley, and Regal (twice). He also held the ECW World Tag Team Championships twice with Chris Candido and once more with Justin Credible.

The veteran William Regal decided to take the eclectic Eugene under his wing and that team won the tag championships from La Resistance (Robert Conway and Sylvain Grenier) in November 2004 on Raw in a three way elimination match also featuring the team of Rhyno and Tajiri. They lost those belts to the same team in January 2005 when Jonathan Coachman filled in for an injured Eugene. Regal was the better member of both teams and also held the World Tag Team Championships three other times, twice with Lance Storm and once with Tajiri. Eugene did manage to hold the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship 10 times with Rob Conway, which is one of half of the team he won his WWE titles from.

Charlie Haas won a legit tag team wrestler as part of the World’s Greatest Tag Team with Shelton Benjamin, capturing the WWE Tag Team Championship. He also managed to win those same championships with Rico, beating the team of Rikishi and Scotty 2 Hotty on SmackDown in April 2004. Two months later they lost those titles to The Dudley Boyz on SmackDown. Even though Rico was pretty terrible, the former American Gladiators champion also won the World Tag Team Championship with Rikishi at one point. Haas and Benjamin were two time WWE Tag Team Champions as well as two time Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions. Rico has also been a Sergeant Inspector for the Nevada Taxi Cab Authority and a member of The Power Team outside of the wrestling business.

The interesting combination of The Hurricane and Rosey won the World Tag Team Championship in May 2005 at Backlash when they beat champions William Regal and Tajiri as well as The Heart Throbs, Simon Dean and Maven, and La Resistance in a tag team turmoil match. Rosey and the Hurricane then lost the titles to Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch in September 2005 at Unforgiven. The Hurricane was also a World Tag Team Champion with Kane, but Rosey was an undeserving champion. He is one of the least successful wrestlers in the Anoa’I family and was also part of the duo 3-Minute Warning. He now runs Epic Championships Wrestling with his father Sika in Florida. Shane “Hurricane” Helms is now working in TNA and is a former two time WWE Cruiserweight Champion and also held the European and Hardcore titles.

The New Nexus came from The Nexus, which came from NXT. David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty were a part of that faction and captured the WWE Tag Team Championships from Kane and the Big Show on Raw in May 2011. The stable disbanded while the pair held the championships before losing them to Air Boom (Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne) in August 2011 on Raw. Otunga is now a horrible announcer on SmackDown, and also held the WWE Tag Team Championship with John Cena in a forced pairing when Cena had to become part of the group. The odd pairing of overrated wrestlers Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov managed to win the WWE Tag Team Championship on Raw in December 2010 in a fatal four way elimination match beating the champs The Nexus (Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel), Mark Henry & Yoshi Tatsu, and The Usos. Slater and Gabriel regained the titles using the name The Corre at the Elimination Chamber event in February 2011. Marella was a fan favorite and also held the WWE Intercontinental Championship twice and the United States Championship before retiring due to injury. Kozlov was a real stiff both inside the ring and out. He was trained in freestyle wrestling as well as MMA and judo and is also an actor who has appeared in episodes of the TV series the Wire and Burn Notice. In 2017 he is scheduled to appear as a Russian assassin in the movies John Wick: Chapter 2 and Fast 8.

1 1. The Spirit Squad

Leave it to the WWE to bring back the worst tag team championship of the 2k era in The Spirit Squad. This five person faction captured the World Tag Team Championship when Kenny and Mikey beat Kane and the Big Show on Raw in April 2006. All five members were official champions under the Freebird Rule, but the same two lost the belts to Ric Flair and Roddy Piper at the Cyber Sunday event in November 2006. Out of the five members of the Spirit Squad, all of them but Nicky, who went on to become Dolph Ziggler, disappeared from the WWE. In 2016 Kenny and Mikey were brought back by The Miz to attack their former ally Ziggler. The Spirit Squad even had a title match against Rhyno and Heath Slater but failed to capture the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.
