The wrestling industry has become more open than it used to be. Although that has been making Jim Cornette go haywire during podcasts and interviews, there is nothing the juggernauts such as WWE can do to stop the demise of kayfabe.
However, the WWE and other major players have devised neo-kayfabe by which they feed the fans only information they want them to know. Many conspire that reputed wrestling journalists such as Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez often report news that the company had fed them to keep neo-kayfabe alive.
However, there are certain things that a company cannot lie about. Ownership of intellectual property comes to mind.
The author failed to backspace the above paragraph though he was reminded about the ongoing conflict between The Hardys and WWE and Anthem Wrestling Exhibitions LLC over the ownership of Broken Matt, Brother Nero, Broken Brilliance and Vanguard 1.
The following article discusses 15 recent marriages that are lesser known to wrestling fans as opposed to more popular marriages such as Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, The Undertaker and Michelle McCool, Kevin Owens and Karina Steen, CM Punk and AJ Lee, The Miz and Maryse and Rusev and Lana. Since real-life married couples are few and far between, we have included former WWE employees in the list.
If you feel we failed to mention other lesser known WWE couples who were recently hitched, you may mention about them in the comments section on the website or our Facebook page.
15. Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae
Alongside Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano has become a regular fixture in NXT, even winning the NXT Tag Team Championship in November 2016. He should attribute his recent success to the effect of his marriage with fellow wrestler Candice LeRae. The couple tied the knot at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel in Anaheim two months earlier, with his tag-team partner being one of the groomsmen.
Despite his wife still wrestling in the indies, the couple have managed to keep the romance alive. She recently tweeted, “Every time my husband picks me up from the airport, he greets me with flowers. I’ll never ever get tired of it.” Given her proficiency, she will definitely earn a WWE contract that will help her travel with her husband while doing their dream jobs.
14. Alberto El Patron and Paige
Many news outlets reported that Alberto El Patron and Paige would tie the knot in April, with the former even confirming the same on Instagram. The couple have not offered us an update and, given their penchant for public display of love, they should have crammed Instagram and Twitter with their wedding images. They may have chosen to keep mum after witnessing the negative publicity they had been receiving.
However, those in the know speculate that Del Rio/El Patron’s divorce with his first wife Angela Velkei has not been finalized yet. How a man could legally marry another woman while being married to another is beyond me. Perhaps, he should have sought the help of his British soon-to-be wife to proofread his Instagram post.
13. Josh Mathews and Madison Rayne
With Josh Mathews’ feud with Jeremy Borash garnering a decent amount of interest, it is safe to assume the former WWE announcer has managed to keep his head above water after leaving the McMahon empire. He ought to love working for Impact Wrestling not only because of their recent revival but also because of getting to travel with his wife Madison Rayne, who was a member of the legendary The Beautiful People stable.
The couple, who exchanged vows in 2015, even have their own their digital exclusive show titled With This Ring in which they run down what had happened in Impact Wrestling the previous week for fans who had not been keeping up with the product. To think the couple are making a living out of discussing wrestling in front of a camera.
12. Angelina Love and Davey Richards
Angelina Love, who worked with WWE between 2004 and 2007, married Davey Richards in June 2015; the couple now have a one-year-old boy named David Vincent Richards. With the two biggest American professional wrestling promotions deciding to use real life marriages in story lines (see: John Cena and Nikki Bella and The Miz and Maryse feud), they have found themselves appearing together on the television.
With the couple feuding with Richards’ former tag-team partner Eddie Edwards and his real-life wife Alisha Edwards, they ought to enjoy travelling together despite being booed for playing heels. Although their chances of being signed to WWE in the future is slim, they will not have regrets as they ought to be enjoying quality time, kicking other couples’ butt.
11. Kelly Kelly and Sheldon Souray
Much like Batista, Kelly Kelly has a well-known dating history as she has dated many superstars in CM Punk, Randy Orton, John Cena and even Batista himself. She finally found love that she was keen on keeping when she met National Hockey League defenseman Sheldon Souray. The couple were engaged in August 2014, but it took two years for the stars to align as they exchanged vows only in February 2017 in Mexico.
The couple now run a pizzeria together with former NHL goaltender Martin Brodeur. She will appear in E!’s third season of WAGS while also performing the role of an ambassador with the WWE. After retiring in 2012, the WWE Universe may never see her in a wrestling gear again, but she hardly seems to be missing in-ring action as he gets to meet up with colleagues often while also cherishing life with her husband.
10. Dean Ambrose and Renee Young
Dean Ambrose and Renee Young had been dating for months prior to their secret marriage in early April. Perhaps, the couple wanted to maintain the secrecy of their marriage, but they proceeded to announce it on live television after heels Dolph Ziggler and Kevin Owens congratulated her on Talking Smack without citing a reason. However, with the couple rocking a ring on consecutive nights on Raw and SmackDown LIVE, it was not difficult to fathom why they were congratulating the Talking Smack host.
A day later, Ambrose proceeded to tweet, “Marriage is nice. Thanks for all the love.” Their decision to not make their marriage public initially is fathomable as they have been receiving hate comments on Tumblr and Twitter fans who think they do not make a good couple. Being a celebrity is a bed of roses, apparently.
9. Aiden English and Shaul Guerrero
Until very recently, Aiden English’s main roster career looked bleak. With his former The Vaudevillians tag-team partner getting the pink slip, he has gotten rid of his Marty Jannetty, and his artist gimmick is drawing enough interest for him to manage a feud with Tye Dillinger at the very least. There are whispers that suggest that he might get a push that would see him rise to the mid card after languishing in the under card for the entirety of his stint on the main roster.
Although many fans knew that he was once dating Eddie Guerrero’s daughter, Shaul Guerrero, who wrestled as Raquel Diaz in NXT, but none seem to be aware of their marriage that took place in January 2016. The couple seem very supportive of each other’s careers – she has given up wrestling to pursue a pole dancing career – and take the time out to do couple-y things despite their hectic schedules.
8. Bo Dallas and Sarah Backman
Bray Wyatt’s personal life is well known as the fans have proved very keen on knowing about the wrestler that plays a mysterious role on the television. Unsurprisingly, pictures of his his wife Samantha Rotunda and two kids have been shared quite often online. His brother Bo Dallas’s personal life hardly draws any interest much akin to his in-ring character.
The 26-year-old wrestler is married to the most decorated women’s arm wrestlers in the world in Sarah Backman, who has won the World Arm Wrestling Championship a record eight times. They tied the knot when he won his first and only NXT Championship, in June 2014. Although his wrestling career has been underwhelming, the couple delight in each other’s company, as evidenced by her Instragram photos.
7. Beth Phoenix and Edge
Edge still comes across as his goofy self on The Edge and Christian Show. He even featured ina reunion segment with former Edgeheads Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder recently. One need not be an Edgehead to know that Beth Phoenix and Edge have been an item for quite some time now; however, not many were aware of the fact that they had already exchanged woes prior to Phoenix’s WWE Hall of Fame speech in which she addressed him as her husband.
Despite his fathering Phoenix’s two daughters, he married her only on his birthday in October 2016. Given their Instagram and Twitter posts, the couple seem to be enjoying a life that does not involve hitting people or being hit by steel chairs and ladders.
6. Magnus and Mickie James
Mickie James’s return to WWE has not been fantastic, but she has been excellently putting young talent over in her segments. Her being branded as old as The Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young positioned Alexa Bliss as an excellent talker, for an instance. While the fans are aware of her work with Impact Wrestling, where she won the Knockouts Championship thrice, many remain unaware of her marriage that took place during her time away from the McMahons’ company.
At 35, she married a much younger Magnus, who currently main-events Impact Wrestling, in December 2015 after the couple had welcomed their first child three months earlier. Despite their working for different companies keeping them apart, the couple seem to set aside time to watch The Great British Bake Off together.
5. Randy Orton and Kimberly Kessler
Randy Orton’s decorated dating resume is well documented. However, not many fans are aware of his marital status. After dating his superfan Kimberly Kessler for months, he popped the question after a candlelit dinner. The couple married in November 2015, eight days before the birth of their daughter Brooklyn Rose Orton. His wife has three sons from her previous relationship while he himself has a daughter from his first marriage. He claims that the step-siblings get along well, and the couple seem to be thoroughly enjoying life with their five kids.
Legend has it that the Viper was, in fact, shy to approach his current wife, who was attending a WWE event in New York. The couple seem to be embarking on a beautiful love story, with a superfan marrying a legendary wrestler.
4. Kurt Angle and Giovanna Angle
Almost every WWE fan should be aware of his addiction thanks to his being open about his sufferings. He now comes across as a hero to those who are battling alcohol and substance addiction as he has managed to earn a contract with a company that has a serious drug policy. However, nobody knows about his personal life as he has seldom talked about his family.
Almost every informed fan knows that Karen Jarrett, who can now be tagged poor man’s Stephanie McMahon, was his ex-wife, but not many fans are aware of his current gorgeous wife Giovanna Angle. The couple have three kids together, with their youngest kid being just six months old. Her Instagram posts divulge the amount of fun the couple have together with their beautiful kids.
3. Batista and Sarah Jade
In a recent episode of Talk Is Jericho, Batista stated that his passion for wrestling had not gone down and even revealed that he had been in talks with Vince McMahon and Triple H over a program with the latter. Outside the WWE ring, he has been fairly successful, even starring in the recent Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. However, none seem to be aware of his marital status despite everyone being keen on the size of his certain something.
The Animal has been married thrice, with his latest marriage taking place in October 2015 to Sarah Jade, who is just two years older than his first daughter Keilani Bautista. She was named Miss Pole Dance America in 2016 while he he has been flourishing in Hollywood. The couple seem very successful while also being happy together.
2. Sasha Banks and Sarath Ton
Sasha Banks had been married to independent wrestler Sarath Ton, whom she had met while learning the ropes in Massachusetts. She attributes her success to Ton’s support, who even left his job just to be with her when she moved to Florida to wrestle in Florida Championship Wrestling.
She decided to keep mum about her marital status until very recently as she believed that the creepy comments her husband would receive on the social media would hurt them both. In Lillian Garcia’s podcast Making Their Way To The Ring, she told her fans, “Okay, you know about it, but it’s none of your business.” He currently travels with her as he works as a costume designer for WWE now; he even makes wrestling gear for AJ Styles, Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
1. Bret Hart and Stephanie Hart
Some now view Bret Hart as a bitter retired wrestler, who hates on Seth Rollins, saying that he’s a dangerous worker. He even manages to stay relevant thanks to the videos he post on social media; his Ric Flair and Brock Lesnar diss that saw him gloat his Simpsons appearances will definitely stand the test of time. He even garnered a massive amount of support when he was undergoing treatment for cancer.
However, nobody seems aware of his third marriage. At 53, he married Stephanie Washington, who is the same age as his daughter Jade Hart. At the time of his marriage, he even had two grandchildren. However, the couple, who have now been together for eight years, are leading a happy life together.
