The WWE has been suffering with a top champion who seems to still be having issues getting over, and a top babyface that sadly is part-time and is maybe too intense for his own good (if there is such a thing).

The roster has been shuffled over and over, with characters going back and forth from face to heel and heel to face way too often, and it doesn’t give fans any time to truly invest in the characters. The trend of having a character change needs to be a slow burn and it needs to be something that takes times, not something that happens week to week, which has often been the case on television recently in the company.

Right now in the WWE there’s a list of decent faces that really could use a new look, a look that could totally change their characters and give them, and the company, a totally fresh look.

Today we look at 15 current WWE faces, in other words, good guys, and talk about how and why those characters should take a long hard look at turning to the dark side – going heel, and how it could help the company.

15 15. Damien Sandow

Now known as ‘Macho Mandow,’ this character has been in a stale state since his break off at WrestleMania 31 from The Miz. Many felt that Sandow would get a huge push after the break up as he was super over with fans, but instead he just went into another cartoon-like gimmick, dressing up as the late Randy “Macho Man” Savage and teaming with Curtis Axel, who dresses up like Hulk Hogan. It’s purely a comedy team and one that needs to be squashed. Sandow was best as a bad guy when he first appeared on the scene and getting back to his original character as a heel is the best case for him and the WWE.

The current WWE Tag Team Champions were put back together and, in somewhat of a surprise, given the belts over the hated ‘New Day’ club. When they were heels, they were at their best, able to be sneaky as well as more aggressive in their matches with face teams. The face version of the PTP is not nearly as over and the company needs more heel tag teams, so a switch in character makes sense for them.

13 13. Neville

The most successful face newcomer from NXT is over with the fans and plays the underdog role well. He has been getting beat an awful lot and a new look/attitude would do him good. It also would open up a whole new look to his character, something we’ve yet to see from Neville, who has always played the role of a super over good guy with the crowd. Let’s see if the character gets a look at playing heel and, if he does, he’d make a great IC champion when Sheamus time is up with the belt.

12 12. Paige

This is a no-brainer because you know with the current state of the WWE Divas division at some point this is going to happen. Paige currently is a face and it’s a character that doesn’t have the same ‘killer instinct’ as when she’s playing the ‘bad girl.’ She’s getting shot after shot at the Bella’s and the WWE Divas Title, which at some point she’s probably going to take. It would be nice to see the WWE keep her a heel for at least a year and stop changing her character continuously.

11 11. Cesaro

They have missed the boat totally on Cesaro, who actually did fight as a heel against John Cena on RAW on June 29th. Overall though he’s still a face and is now in the abyss, with no tag team partner in Tyson Kidd (who is out after another surgery that will keep him sidelined for some time). The company should turn Cesaro back to the same dominating heel character he was when he first came on the scene, and even after he won the Andre the Giant Battle Royal at WrestleMania 30. Invest in this guy for a year with a solid push and it will be well worth the investment.

10 10. Dolph Ziggler

He’s very much over with the current WWE fan base, but, at the same time, his biggest success came in his program with John Cena which eventually netted him the World Heavyweight Title after he won Money in the Bank and beat Alberto Del Rio on the RAW after WrestleMania 29. Zigger just inked a new deal, but seems stuck in that mid-card, which is tough to see him in as he’s got all the tools to be a world champion contender and take it to the next level. A turn back to heel may put new life in his character.

9 9. Ryback

He’s the current WWE IC champ and right now the fans seem to be buying in. How long that will last is anyone’s guess and it would be a cool twist to see the big guy go back to being a bad guy, something he was able to pull off rather easily when he was feuding with John Cena for the WWE Title after WrestleMania 29. He’s a ‘stiff’ worker with a mentality towards being aggressive much like Brock Lesnar. A heel Ryback vs a face Lesnar would be a great program with two huge beasts.

8 8. The Usos

Right now this tag team is on the shelf after Jey suffered a shoulder separation at WrestleMania 31, but they should be back in the near future. The team could have a fresh look if they come back embracing the dark side, something this team was when they debuted back in 2010, but which only lasted a year before they went face. They also have had a manager in Naomi, the real life wife of Jimmy Uso, who is currently a heel. It would be cool to see a Uso vs Prime Time Players feud, with The Usos as the heel team trying to regain their titles.

7 7. Randy Orton

This is another case of a wrestler who simply has made the switch from face to heel way too many times. Orton has been a face for most of this year, coming back after his ‘injury’ at the hands of Seth Rollins and feuding with him most of the spring, including their terrific match at WrestleMania. Orton’s best work has always been as a bad guy and there’s not much of a doubt he will turn again at some point. His ‘apex predator’ character is a perfect heel and someday he will again be taking on top faces as a bad guy.

6 6. The Undertaker

Alright, this likely will never happen, but imagine a WrestleMania 32 match between Sting and The Undertaker, with the old school heel Taker instead of the vulnerable older wrestler who was taken out at WrestleMania XXX by Brock Lesnar. It would be a cool end to easily one of the best careers in WWE history and while fans may not like it, he could go out on his back, giving back to the industry with a loss to Sting, who gave back losing to Triple H this year.

5 5. Roman Reigns

via wwe264.blogspot.com

A lot of people have been calling for Reigns to go heel since before WrestleMania, with some saying he should join up with Paul Heyman and have Heyman turn on Lesnar in a twist to the main event. It didn’t happen and now it seems like Reigns has been stuck in the ‘good guy’ zone ever since. The WWE appears to have designs of putting the belt on him at some point, but he was at his best when he was still considered a ‘heel’ with The Shield. Sadly, the push failed when he won the Royal Rumble in a poorly scripted match and the fans began to turn on him. Reigns could really have a great run against as a monster heel who blames the fans for his misfortunes.

4 4. Daniel Bryan

There’s a lot of questions about whether Bryan is ever physically going to be able to return to the ring and that speculation continued to grow when former WWE Champion Bret Hart recently said that Bryan has wrestled his last match. Bryan rise to being a top fan favorite began when he was doing his ‘no’ chants as a heel, back during WrestleMania 28. If he does heal enough to return, coming back as a heel would be a great way to put him right back in the main event – as a bad guy against face stars like John Cena and Brock Lesnar.

3 3. Dean Ambrose

Many felt it would be Ambrose going heel last summer when Seth Rollins turned on his two Shield brothers and eventually took the brass ring all the way to the WWE Title. Now, Ambrose is super over with the fans, to the point where some say he could be the next ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, a face who fights against all authority. At some point, he should go back to being a heel, as that’s where he seems the most comfortable.

2 2. John Cena

I know, this one is LONG overdue. How many times can we talk about John Cena going heel before it happens? The ‘Doctor of Thuganomics’ should seriously take a long look at being the bad guy again, like he was back in 2003, even if it’s for a short period of time. Cena has said over and over in interviews that it’s not going to happen, but that would be the beauty of it. Have him turn when most would least expect it and it would shock the wrestling world, like when Hulk Hogan donned the black of the NWO years ago.

1 1. Brock Lesnar

Look, this guy was never meant to be a good guy. It just sort of organically happened, just like it did back when he went face in 2002-2003. He gets cheered for his stiff style and incredibly aggressive moves. He’s going to eventually get another shot to main event WrestleMania, and this time it will be as the most over face of the company. In the end though, Lesnar is a great heel and he should return to that style before he eventually walks away from the company, whenever that may be.
