There is no event in wrestling that can match up to the legacy of WrestleMania. With the 32nd edition on the horizon, now seems like as good a time as any to look back and see what matches hold various records at the grand daddy of them all. We'll go through from WrestleMania I all the way to WrestleMania 31 and see which matches or wrestlers have the honor, or dishonor in some cases, to hold a spot in WrestleMania history.

It's the biggest and best show that WWE puts on year after year, so it's about time to learn some history about the event isn't it? We'll take a look at the full history of WrestleMania and see what the best, and the worst, that the event has had to offer up to this point. Of course some of these records are all subject to change as recently as this Mania, but then there are those that will stand up for as long as the company is around. We're going to look at the guys that open the show, the mid carders who carry us through the slog of the middle of the show, and the main event guys that close the show with force. What they all have in common, however, is that they all have earned a spot in the record books.

We have the shortest match and the longest match, the highest rated match and the lowest rated match, the most wins and the most losses, some surprises and some that you could probably see coming a mile away. There's a little bit of everything in this list so sit back and enjoy the trip through WrestleMania history.

20 20. Shortest Match 

Winner: 11 Seconds -  Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero - WrestleMania XXIV

Chavo came into this contest as the reigning ECW champion, but it took only eleven seconds for that to change. While Guerrero was standing in the ring awaiting his big red opponent, Kane's music and pyro hit but the masked man was nowhere to be found. Instead, Kane snuck up behind Chavo from under the ring, planting him with a thunderous chokeslam to end Guerrero's night in a record short time. Chavo was flat on his back for a longer amount of time than the actual match took!

19 19. Longest Match  

Winner: 62 Minutes - Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart - WrestleMania XII

Now this one is a bit more obvious, but nonetheless the distinction of longest match in WrestleMania history goes to the iron man contest between 1996 Royal Rumble Winner and the defending WWE Champion Bret Hart. The sixty minute time limit proved to somehow not be enough time for the two to settle their score as the match was all knotted up at 0-0 when the timer hit. Hart thought that meant he was done for the night having successfully hung onto his gold but the decision was made to restart the match under sudden death rules. Michaels was able to nail Bret with a Sweet Chin Music to fulfill his childhood dream in just over an hour.

18 18. Highest Rated Match (via Meltzer) 

Tie: 5 stars - Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart - WrestleMania XIII

5 stars - Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels - WrestleMania X

Can't really argue with either of these matches being considered five star all time classics by Dave Meltzer. First of all, the ladder match between Ramon and Michaels is still to this day the measuring stick used to compare any and all ladder matches that occur throughout the world. It's been held up as the water mark that every wrestler competing in a match like that strives to hit but ultimately falls just short. Then there's the submission match between Hart and Austin with the iconic moment of Austin passing out to the sharpshooter because the toughest s.o.b. in the business refused to tap out. Add in the double turn done to perfection at the end and I'm with Meltzer on this one, how can you pick one above the other?

17 17. Lowest Rated Match (via Meltzer) 

Winner: -5 stars - Roddy Piper vs. Mr. T - WrestleMania II

This wasn't really a wrestling match as it was billed as a boxing contest but with it being the only WrestleMania match to get the infamous minus five star rating, it's clearly the "winner" here. After a horribly boring first three rounds that saw each man get completely gassed, the contest was thankfully brought to an end when Piper took it upon himself to body slam Mr. T causing a disqualification. If you want to discount that match due to it being a boxing contest instead of wrestling, then your winner would be The Bushwackers vs. The Rougeaus at WrestleMania V which managed to get a negative four star rating.

16 16. Highest Buy Rate 

Winner : 1.3 million buys - WrestleMania XXVIII

Well I guess the year long build to the "once in a lifetime" match between The Rock and John Cena was rather effective. Granted when you have two icons the level of those two you're pretty much guaranteeing that people will be more than willing to turn over the money to see them face off. Throw in some matches like Triple H against The Undertaker in the Hell in a Cell and CM Punk finally going one on one against Chris Jericho and there's little doubt as to why WrestleMania XXVIII has set the bar.

15 15. Highest Attendance 

Winner: 93,173 - Detroit - WrestleMania III

Here's another one that I'm sure most of you were aware of, but it doesn't take away from just how staggering of a number that is. Hogan vs. Andre was sure to draw a crowd but I don't think even the WWE could have imagined such a turnout. When looking at the rest of the card, the fact that so many people came to the stadium that day is even more amazing. Yes, Steamboat vs. Savage was a classic, but going into the event the only match people cared about was the main event. It was certainly a different age of wrestling back then, when all that mattered was The Hulkster and whoever he was going to run wild against that day.

14 14. Lowest Attendance 

Winner: 9,000 - Chicago - WrestleMania II

As if splitting WrestleMania into three different cities wasn't enough to promise that the individual numbers were going to be down, the card that WWE put in front of the Chicago fans made sure that no one would show up. With a "main event" being a tag team title match with The Bulldogs going up against The Dream Team consisting of Brutus Beeface and Greg Valentine, a twenty man NFL vs. WWF battle royal, a women's title match, and Corporal Kirchner going one on one against Nikolai Volkoff. it's not hard to imagine why people weren't interested in seeing this one in person.

13 13. Most Losses in One Night 

Winner: Two - Kurt Angle - WrestleMania 2000

Kurt Angle came into the night wearing both the Intercontinental and European championships, putting them both on the line in a two fall triple threat match against Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit. The first fall was for the Intercontinental Title that saw Benoit hit his diving headbutt on Jericho to pick up the strap while Jericho returned the favor by winning the second fall thanks to a lionsault on Benoit. Kurt Angle was never pinned or made to submit on this night, but was still on the losing side of things not once, but twice.

12 12. Most Wins in One Night 

Winner: Four - Randy Savage - WrestleMania IV

This is one record that I don't think is ever going to be topped. Nowadays, it's incredibly rare to see someone compete even twice in one night but during the tournament for the vacated WWE Title at WrestleMania 4, Randy Savage competed in and won four matches throughout the night! The incredible show of endurance and dedication to be the man on top started with Savage defeating Butch Reed in the first round, Greg Valentine in the second, One Man Gang in the semifinals, and finally knocking off Ted DiBiase to claim his first WWE Championship.

11 11. Most Seen Match

Tie: 3 - Triple H vs. The Undertaker & The Rock vs. Steve Austin

Go figure that four of the most iconic performers in wrestling history found each other over and over again come WrestleMania season. While The Rock and Austin got their three match ups out of the way in five years going toe to toe at WrestleMania XV, X-Seven, and XIX, Hunter and The Undertaker took a little more time in going at it again. Their first contest came all the way back at WrestleMania X-Seven in a street fight, not rekindling their flame for another ten years in a contest at WrestleMania XXVII. With their Hell in a Cell match the following year at WrestleMania XXVIII they matched the two biggest stars in wrestling history facing off for a third time.

10 10. Most Consecutive Losses

Winner: Seven - Tito Santana

Tito will go down in history as the first man to win at WrestleMania, unfortunately for him however it would be his last win on the grandest stage of them all. At WrestleMania II he teamed up with Junkyard Dog to lose to The Funk Brothers, he lost at WrestleMania III alongside the British Bulldogs against The Hart Foundation and Danny Davis, lost another tag match at WrestleMania IV to Demolition, then yet another tag match went the other way as he and Martel lost to WrestleMania V, Tito finally returned to singles action at WrestleMania VI to lose to The Barbarian, then was on the losing side against The Mountie at WrestleMania VII, before suffering his final WM loss at the hands of Shawn Michaels to kick off WrestleMania VIII. Tough stretch there for Santana.

9 9. Most Tag Title Match Wins 

Winner: Three - Demolition

It all started at WrestleMania IV for one of the most iconic tag teams in wrestling history. Picking up their first run with the belts following a victory against Rick Martel and Tito Santana, better known as Strike Force. Their run continued through WrestleMania V when the then trio (after adding Crush to the team) defeated The Powers of Pain which was made up of The Barbarian and The Warlord in a 3 on 2 handicap match. Their winning streak moved on to WrestleMania VI where they would defeat the team that took the titles from them, The Collosal Connection (Haku and Andre The Giant) to pick up their third and final victory for the World Tag Team Championships.

8 8. Most Intercontinental Title Match Wins 

Tie: Two - The Rock & Razor Ramon

This one certainly came as a surprise to me, but believe it or not there are only two guys to win multiple matches with the Intercontinental Championship on the line! Throughout the past 31 WrestleManias ,the IC Belt was on the line a total of 20 times and had 18 different winners, with only The Rock and Razor Ramon winning twice. Back when he was known as Rocky Maivia, The Rock picked up his first WrestleMania victory successfully defending his title against The Sultan, then again defended the title against Ken Shamrock with the help of his Nation of Domination buddies the following year. Razor Ramon, of course, won the historic ladder match against Michaels at WrestleMania X, then defeated Jeff Jarrett the following year to retain the title.

7 7. Most WHC Match Wins 

Winner: Two - The Undertaker

From WrestleMania XIX to WrestleMania 29, the World Heavyweight Championship was defended each and every year and saw a different winner each and every year with one exception. Until the title eventually makes its way back on screen, The Phenom holds the record for most victories with the big gold belt on the line. His first victory came at WrestleMania 23, being the man to finally dethrone Batista as the World Heavyweight Champion before doing the same thing the following year to Edge at WrestleMania XXIV.

6 6. Most WWE Match Title Wins 

Tie: Five - Hulk Hogan & John Cena

Well this is certainly the least surprising entry on this list, right? Hogan missed out on defending his title at WrestleMania I thanks to him teaming up with Mr. T instead or else he'd surely be at six title match victories and sitting alone on top. Instead he has to settle for defending the title at WrestleMania II and III, and winning the WWE Title at WrestleMania V,VII, and infamously squashing Yokozuna at WrestleMania IX. Twelve years later at WrestleMania 21, it was time for the new version of Hulkamania to take hold, Cenamania that is. Cena won his first title against JBL at WrestleMania 21, defended the WWE Title the next two years against HHH and HBK respectively, won the title again at WrestleMania XXVI against Batista, then finally won his latest World Title against The Rock at WrestleMania 29.

5 5. Most Consecutive WrestleManias 

 Winner: 15 - The Undertaker - WrestleMania X-Seven to 31

If not for The Montreal Screwjob, this could have been Bret Hart's record but he was stopped short at 12 straight Manias. Instead we have the greatest performer in WrestleMania history, The Undertaker, which isn't a bad consolation prize. The less famous of Undertaker's streaks began back at WrestleMania 17 when he defeated Triple H in a street fight and has appeared at ever Mania since. It's truly incredible that this streak is longer than most wrestler's career's and it isn't even all of The Undertaker's WrestleMania matches!

4 4. Most Main Events 

Winner: Eight - Hulk Hogan

Surprise surprise, the ultimate spotlight stealer was part of the last match on the show more than anyone else! Throughout the first nine WrestleManias, Hogan was not on last only once, during WrestleMania IV when it was Savage vs. DiBiase for the WWE Championship. Yet even then, after Randy had accomplished his life long goal of being the number one guy, Hulk made sure to come out and ensure that the focus was on him by celebrating with his "friend." If WrestleMania IV wasn't a tournament for the title, I bet you Hogan would've done whatever he had to in order to make sure his rematch against Andre was the last thing people saw on the show.

3 3. Most Matches 

Winner: 22 - The Undertaker

Here's another record that's going to be incredibly difficult for anyone to try to surpass or even match for that matter, considering that he's still adding to the record. Eventually we start running out of words to describe The Phenom but just think about this for a second. Over the last twenty years, The Undertaker has missed just one WrestleMania. He was forced to miss WrestleMania 2000 but was a part of every event since WrestleMania XI before then and has been at every single event since. The longevity of The Undertaker's career is utterly mind boggling and while he has looked older in recent years, his recent matches against Lesnar show that he's still more than capable of entertaining the masses.

2 2. Most Wins 

Winner: 21 - The Undertaker

Once again, no one should be surprised about this one considering every wrestling fan knows about The Streak. Starting way back at WrestleMania VII against Jimmy Snuka, The Undertaker didn't lose a single match at WrestleMania until the 30th edition of the event, eventually falling to The Conqueror Brock Lesnar. The list of victims at WrestleMania is certainly an impressive one including the likes of Edge, Batista, Triple H, and Shawn Michaels, cementing The Undertaker as the greatest performer in WrestleMania history.

1 1. Most Losses 

 Winner: 10 - Triple H

Yes, believe it or not, the man with the golden shovel has more losses on the grandest stage of them all than anyone else. While we all like to think of the times Triple H beat the likes of Booker T and Chris Jericho, he also did his fair share of staring up at the lights when the final bell rang. The losses began piling up back at WrestleMania XII when he was utterly squashed against The Ultimate Warrior. While he did go on to have a decent run at Mania after that he also lost to Kane, The Undertaker, Chris Benoit, Batista, John Cena, Randy Orton, and Daniel Bryan. So complain all you want about HHH, but you gotta admit that he does always do what's best for business.
