WrestleMania is the pinnacle of professional wrestling. The biggest event on the year's calendar with over 80,000 in attendance each year, making the main event the most coveted spot in all of wrestling. However, all WrestleMania main events aren’t created equal.

There are plenty of current stars who are great professional wrestlers who know how to entertain a crowd, but this is the biggest stage that wrestling has to offer, so it’s not just anyone that can seize the moment. Careers are limited and there’s only one match that can be put in this place every year, so not all of these may come true, but there are certainly enough qualified performers in WWE today who deserve such a spot.

Whether it's due to the era in which it occurred, the poor booking that led up to it, the failure of the performer, or a combination of these, there have been some terrible main events with terrible performers, and while we can look back on this with the use of hindsight, we can see where WWE was going with some of them. On the other hand, some are just ridiculous blunders that make you wonder how WWE is still in business.

So, sit back and read along as we look at 10 performers who didn’t deserve their spot in the main event of WrestleMania, and 10 current stars that we believe will be put in that position one day.

20 Undeserving: Sycho Sid (WrestleMania 13)

via motownsportsrevival.com

Usually, the WWE Championship match should be the one to finish out a WrestleMania (we’ve pointed out several examples on this list of where it should have, but didn’t), but this is one of those rare cases in which it shouldn’t have. When people think of WrestleMania 13, they think of the incredible bout between Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin that ended with the greatest double turn in wrestling history, and even without the benefit of hindsight, that should have been the final match. Sure, The Undertaker’s legendary streak needed a few main events, but this just wasn’t the match to do it in, as Sid wasn’t a main event talent.

19 Current star: Drew McIntyre

via doublegsports.com

A decade ago, Drew McIntyre was introduced to the WWE Universe as "The Chosen One," and while his journey hasn’t gone the way we all expected, he will one day be closing out the biggest stage in professional wrestling. Since returning to the company, McIntyre has excelled in every way imaginable, and with the rumored heat on Braun Strowman, he could potentially be the guy to take the Universal Championship off Brock Lesnar. It’s likely not going to be the WrestleMania 35 main event (we’ll get to that), but in the near future, McIntyre will be in the main event, as he could be the next face of the entire company.

18 Undeserving: Triple H (WrestleMania 32)

via si.com

During his career, Triple H was no doubt a worthy candidate for this spot, as he was one of the biggest stars WWE had seen in the 2000s, but by the time WrestleMania 32 rolled around, it was time to create more stars. Sure, the goal of having Roman Reigns go over him was to create a new star, but Reigns was already at the top, and this should have been the moment for two up-and-coming stars to use the spotlight. No main event has taken place in the last several years that didn't involve a part-timer/veteran, and this year would have been the perfect spot to include two young stars, but as always, The Game's ego got in the way.

17 Current star: Velveteen Dream

via Fox Sports

We’ve featured four current NXT stars on this list, and while the others are more physically gifted than the Velveteen Dream, they don’t have control over their character like Dream does, and that’s what will propel him to the top. Superstars like John Cena, Kurt Angle, and others have called him a future star in the making, but it’s all on Vince McMahon whether he gets over at the top level, and that’s what we’re a bit worried about. If handled correctly, the 23-year-old Superstar, Velveteen Dream could be a World Champion and multi-time WrestleMania main event, but with that, time will only tell.

16 Undeserving: Hulk Hogan (WrestleMania IX)

via nydailynews.com

Hulk Hogan is one of the biggest stars that wrestling has ever produced, and his WrestleMania main events were all well deserved, except for this one, which came about in a very strange manner. The true main event of this show was Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna, but when the kayfabe Sumo giant defeated the "Excellence of Execution," Hogan ran down to the ring, challenged him, and in seconds, pinned him, winning the WWE Championship in the process. It worked brilliantly for Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 31, but this wasn’t a MITB cash-in; it was just a random challenge, and it didn’t work at all.

15 Current star: Becky Lynch

via wwe.com

Despite the injury that took her out of a dream Survivor Series match against Ronda Rousey, "The Man," Becky Lynch is still the hottest act in WWE, and despite management initially being against her, it’s clear that they’ve become just as big a fan as the rest of the world. Lynch’s character is so simple, yet so effective, and she’s been taking shots at everyone in WWE. Since her bout with Rousey was called off, there is a chance for it to be the main event of ‘Mania 35. My money would be against that right now, but if she can return from the nose injury/concussion the same star that she’s been since SummerSlam, it’s going to be hard for WWE to stop her.

14 Undeserving: Sid Justice (WrestleMania VIII)

via youtube.com

Back in the early days of WrestleMania, WWE had plenty of talent, but none that could legitimately oppose Hulk Hogan, so throughout the card, they had names like Bret and Owen Hart, Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, and Randy Savage,. However, it was Sid Justice chosen to compete in the main event. At the time, plenty of people within WWE thought he could be a top name (as evidenced by the fact he main-evented WrestleMania 13 too), but it just didn’t turn out that way. In the end, it didn’t matter who was across from Hogan, as he was undisputed at the top of the food chain, but it just looks a little worse looking back on it when it was Sid Justice opposing him.

13 Current star: Matt Riddle

via wrestleyard.com

When some people step inside a wrestling ring, you can tell they’ve got the ‘it factor’, and Matt Riddle clearly has that. The former UFC star is ready to become a big-time Superstar on the WWE stage. He’s only been on our screens for a short time, but if you saw any of his work on the independent scene, you know that he has all the intangibles needed to be a World Champion, and he’s already got a main event in mind. For the past few years, Riddle has been dropping social media hints that he wants to retire Brock Lesnar, and while it won’t happen at WrestleMania 35, it could happen in the near future. Even if it doesn’t, he will get that match one day.

12 Undeserving: Brock Lesnar (WrestleMania 34)

via forbes.com

Brock Lesnar has been the cause of a lot of debate online recently, and that’s due to the contract that WWE give him. Even though it makes sense, he doesn’t deserve to be in the main event of WrestleMania. It doesn’t help that the company put him alongside Roman Reigns, as the match got an awful reaction (especially when Nakamura vs. Styles could have taken this spot), making it clear that Lesnar isn’t the star he once was. It's true that there’s no one else at his level in the company currently in terms of a draw, but that will never be the case until they move on from him, making it likely that this is his last ‘Mania main event ever.

11 Current star: AJ Styles

via wwe.com

AJ Styles has been a superstar in whatever company he works for ever since getting into the wrestling business, and 20 years later, he’s become a star in WWE. There’s truly only one thing left for him to accomplish. Many feared that Styles would be misused when he joined WWE, but he’s now a multi-time WWE Champion, meaning that the main event of WrestleMania is the next logical step. With Roman Reigns out, Styles could feasibly move to RAW in 2019, and if that happens, and you can all but guarantee that he will be considered for the main event of the following WrestleMania.

10 Undeserving: Roman Reigns (WrestleMania 33)

via allsportpk.com

Let’s get this straight; while Roman Reigns isn’t the most popular or best wrestler in the world, he’s worked incredibly hard to become a great sports entertainer, and he has deserved to be on this stage, but just not at WrestleMania 33. Sure, there weren't any matches on the card that could have taken that spot without a performer in said match ending up on this list. It just looks worse on Reigns because it was his third straight main event. No one knows what the future holds for The Big Dog, but we do know that he worked hard to win the respect of the WWE Universe. The company just didn’t do him any favors in this case.

9 Current star: Pete Dunne

via thesportster.com

On the independent scene these days, most performers focus solely on their in-ring work ahead of everything else, but by the ripe young age of 25, Dunne has seemingly figured out everything it takes to be a true superstar in pro wrestling. He currently works in NXT, NXT UK, and all over the UK independent scene, and in his short time with WWE, he’s already taken to calling out Brock Lesnar, which means he has his sights set quite high. It’s not going to happen for several years, as the company still has much more established stars on the main roster, but one day, The Bruiserweight will be closing WrestleMania.

8 Undeserving: The Rock (WrestleMania XXIX)

via complex.com

The Rock is arguably the biggest star in wrestling history, as he’s since gone on to become the biggest star in Hollywood, but by the time WrestleMania XXIX rolled around, he didn’t deserve this spot. He had a match in the main event with John Cena the year before in a match similar to Rock/Hogan, but by WrestleMania XXIX, WWE should have been looking to build stars, and the clear main event should have been CM Punk vs. The Undertaker. If that was the main event, it should have been Punk to finally defeat The Undertaker on that grand stage, but instead, we got a predictable repeat of a year earlier, and it was wrong.

7 Current star: Charlotte Flair

via wwe.com

While there are so many amazing women in WWE today on all three brands, it’s clear that Charlotte, the daughter of Ric Flair, will always be among WWE’s favorites, and if women are to ever main event WrestleMania, her name will be one of the first mentioned. Up until Becky Lynch’s injury, Flair vs. Rousey seemed like the obvious choice for the first-ever Women’s main event, but with that story being such a great one, it seems that will get the first crack. However, that won’t be the last Women’s main event on the grandest stage. With stars like Toni Storm, Shayna Baszler, Io Shirai, Tegan Nox and more down in NXT, plus the stars on the main roster, women will get this chance plenty of times, and Charlotte will no doubt be involved in one.

6 Undeserving: The Miz (WrestleMania XXVII)

via usanetwork.com

If The Miz were to be in the main event of WrestleMania anytime soon, it would be deserved, as he’s been the company's best heel for a number of years now, but back in 2011, he wasn’t ready, especially when opposed by John Cena. He put up a valiant battle, and the video crew within WWE put together an incredible package that made Miz feel like a main eventer, but the bout was purely there to set up The Rock vs. Cena, and that made it even worse. We’ve seen WWE rush people into spots they aren’t ready for many times, and this was another example. It’s just lucky that The Miz works hard enough to have earned a spot as a main event star.

5 Current star: Ricochet

via pwpix.net

It may be a bit too early to call, but Ricochet has been incredible in his first few months with the company, and if he can get past the size issue that still somewhat exists in WWE, he will be a megastar. He’s already got backing from the likes of The Rock, and with his chiseled good looks and jaw-dropping aerial arsenal, the crowds will flock to see him, and that’s what it takes to be a Superstar in WWE. His storytelling and character aspects need definite work, but that’s what NXT is for, and by the time he is called up to either RAW or SmackDown, WWE will have a plethora of dream matches to choose from to go on last at WrestleMania.

4 Undeserving – Bam Bam Bigelow (WrestleMania XI)

via wwe.com

WrestleMania XI is considered one of the worst in history (especially when it was followed by some classics like XIV, X-Seven, and XIX), and most of that falls on the main event, which was contested between Bam Bam Bigelow, and a non-wrestler. We’ll get to that non-wrestler soon, but Bam Bam Bigelow didn’t deserve this spot either, as he was nothing but a fringe main event/upper mid-card talent for his entire run in WWE, making it very confusing why this match took place. The penultimate match on this card was Diesel vs. Shawn Michaels for the then-WWF Championship, and that should have been the main event, making this one of the biggest head-scratchers in WWE history.

3 Current star: Ronda Rousey

via f4wonline.com

WWE is strongly pushing women in wrestling these days, so it makes sense that they would heavily push one of the biggest trailblazers in recent time, in former UFC superstar and current RAW Women’s Champion, "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey. Her transition into professional wrestling has been absolutely fantastic, and in less than a year, Rousey has had several great matches and is rumored to be involved in the main event of ‘Mania 35, a calendar year after her debut. Whether it’s against Charlotte or Becky Lynch, it’s almost a certainty that Rousey is in a WrestleMania main event, and whether you like it or not, she’s become that big a star that she deserves it.

2 Undeserving: Lawrence Taylor (WrestleMania XI)

via si.com

We’ve seen plenty of non-wrestlers have starring roles in WWE over the years from Stephen Amell to Mike Tyson and plenty in between, but none should ever be anywhere near the main event of WrestleMania. Bam Bam Bigelow vs. then-NFL star Lawrence Taylor wasn’t the worst we’d seen from a non-wrestler in WWE, but it was nowhere near the best, and to give this match the main event spot, despite the WWE title match coming right before it, is crazy. WWE seemed to have learned their lesson about this by now because we haven’t seen a non-wrestler in that high a spot since, but it was still something they never should have done.

1 Current star: Braun Strowman

via rollingstone.com

There have been rumors going around recently of backstage heat on Braun Strowman, but outside of that, absolutely nothing is going to hold him back from being one of this generation's biggest stars. With the absence of Roman Reigns, Strowman is the only one who can step into that spot, and while WWE may be looking to put women in the upcoming WrestleMania main event, it’s only a matter of time until Braun takes that spot. Whether it’s next year or five years later, Strowman is a main event level talent, and it’s only a matter of time until he’s the true face of WWE.
