WCW is still missed by the diehard fans of the former promotion that witnessed WWE end it. The best moments from the company are still beloved today. Many of the great matches or strong storylines stand the test of time like Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio or the New World Order forming to deliver a hostile takeover.

Unfortunately, not everything from WCW still hits the mark today when watching back. Quite a few moments that were great at the time no longer have the same appeal without the blinders of nostalgia. Find out which memories will be viewed differently if attempting to view today.

10 The New World Order

Hulk Hogan and the nWo

WCW became a phenomenon when the New World Order formed to take over the wrestling industry. The shows were must-watch television to witness the hostile takeover starting with Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall as the trio.

However, WCW only had a few months of greatness with the nWo before things started to jump the shark. The Giant and Ted DiBiase were questionable additions, but they did add something important. Other members ruined the appeal by the end of 1996 and the segments became repetitive with the nWo destroying the WCW roster most weeks.

9 Bret Hart vs Goldberg Feud

One of the last great moments in WCW came during the Bret Hart vs Goldberg feud. The masterful scene saw the heel Bret outsmarting Goldberg when Goldberg hit the spear but could not get up due to Hart wearing a steel plate under his hockey jersey.

Fans remember the feud positively for that moment even though it was the only strong memory. Goldberg and Bret had overbooked matches that always had horrible endings. The feud even ended in the worst-case scenario with Hart suffering a career-ending injury at the hands of Goldberg.

8 Miss Elizabeth Turning On Randy Savage

Miss Elizabeth in WCW

The signing of Miss Elizabeth with WCW saw fans expecting her to manage Randy Savage even though the two were divorced in real life. WCW ran the huge swerve of Elizabeth turning on Savage to help Ric Flair beat him, leaning into their old WWE storyline continuing.

Elizabeth playing a new character after such a huge moment felt like a noteworthy thing at the time, but she struggled in the heel role. Despite not working in the ring, Elizabeth was never strong at promos and felt out of place not playing the smiling face character when managing Flair and the Four Horsemen.

7 Vince Russo's Shoot Promo

Vince Russo in WCW

Vince Russo had fans second-guessing the script vs reality when he booked a wild angle at Bash at the Beach 2000. The desire to convince fans that things were real saw him cutting a shoot promo running down Hulk Hogan for refusing to lose the WCW Championship.

Hogan reportedly agreed to the angle, but he didn’t realize how far Russo would take it. The promo was a fun moment at the time due to the unpredictable nature of it. However, it just looks like a weak attempt at a quick buzz that ended up getting WCW sued by Hogan.

6 Dennis Rodman Appearances

WCW benefited from having Dennis Rodman making appearances for the company. Rodman was a very popular basketball player of the time for the Chicago Bulls dynasty with Michael Jordan. The mainstream attention helped WCW’s ratings and buy rates.

Various celebrities stand the test of time and still hold great appeal watching back years later. Rodman lost most of his fame and became known for the worst reasons. WCW’s Rodman segments now come off like a D-List celebrity having lackluster matches.

5 Eric Bischoff Calling Out Vince McMahon

Eric Bischoff in WCW

The personal issues between Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff grew when Bischoff took direct shots at Vince and WWE. McMahon tried to avoid mentioning Bischoff on WWE television, but it didn’t stop Eric from making his own challenges.

Bischoff specifically challenged Vince to show up and fight him at a WCW PPV by advertising McMahon as being too cowardly to appear. The challenges were fun at the time, but they look desperate today given how petty the entire situation was.

4 Hulk Hogan's Parade

WCW celebrated like they won a sports championship when signing Hulk Hogan to a contract in 1994. Hogan was a free agent after his WWE run ended poorly, leading to Eric Bischoff making the biggest signing of his tenure.

The debut of Hogan came in a ticker-tape parade with fans and WCW wrestlers attending. Hogan rode in a car to all the cheers before delivering a speech about his desire to take WCW to the top. The statement was huge at the time, but it is a bit hokey looking back, especially since WCW struggled to make big moves forward until Hogan turned heel in 1996.

3 Goldberg's Undefeated Streak

Goldberg in WCW

Goldberg became a huge hit for WCW when his undefeated streak had fans wondering how long it would last. WCW took an unknown newcomer and made him the hottest star in the industry after about six months.

The undefeated streak was legendary, but it would just not work in the same effective manner today. Goldberg’s short squash matches often saw him destroying the best in-ring workers. Wrestlers like Ryback struggled in the same formula since the appeal of what made Goldberg thrive isn’t as strong today.

2 Cruiserweight Division Feuds

Rey Mysterio vs Dean Malenko

The WCW cruiserweight division played a huge role in the company having something different from WWE. Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho, Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero, and many other superb in-ring workers played a huge role in the division thriving.

Fans often overlook that the cruiserweights rarely were placed in noteworthy storylines to build the spectacular matches. Eddie vs Rey’s iconic Halloween Havoc 1997 classic didn’t see Mysterio’s mask on the line added to the story until a few days before the show. Most of the matches featured little character work and they had to rely on their match quality.

1 Sting Wins The WCW Championship From Hulk Hogan

Sting as WCW Champion

The hottest storyline in WCW history saw Sting going after the New World Order to get revenge for turning his friends and fans against him. Sting adopted a new look and character with the Crow chapter of his career starting.

The slow build saw Sting having his first match in sixteen months when defeating Hulk Hogan for the WCW Championship at Starrcade 1997. Fans loved the moment at the time, but the awful booking of the match made it a disaster when looking back at it logically with all the unnecessary twists.
