History is always told by the victors. There are a lot of WCW retrospectives that have come out in the wake of the promotion’s demise that tell the story of a bunch of inept workers until Eric Bischoff got there. But that’s not always the case, especially in the ring. WCW more often than not had a very good roster of solid workers. Sadly, no one in Turner or hired by Turner knew how to run the business.

Occasionally though, the roster and the office were able to pull it all together to bring fans some great WCW PPVs. For fans that didn’t remember or just don’t know, some of these shows easily can rival any good WWE show.

10 The Great American Bash 1990

Headlined by Sting finally toppling Ric Flair to win the NWA title, there was a lot of great action as part of the Great American Bash 1990 and it all mostly came from the tag team division. Doom retained their titles against The Rock N Roll Express. In one of the last big matches of The Midnight Express, Eaton and Lane took on the underrated Southern Boys in easily the match of the night. The night also saw the final WCW PPV appearance of a certain future Deadman when Mean Marc was defeated by Lex Luger.

9 Bash At The Beach 1995

One of WCW’s great strengths was showcasing some of their marquee events in unique places outside of a conventional arena. The 1995 Bash At The Beach took place literally on Huntington Beach! This might be one of the hardest hitting PPVs in WCW history, right from the opening Meng Vs. Sting match.

Some of the undercard had duds (there was a Renegade match, after all), but between the opener, the triple threat tag team match (Harlem Heat, Blue Bloods, Nasty Boys) and the evening’s double main event - Flair/Savage Lumber- umm, Lifeguard Match, and Hogan/Vader in a cage help make the 1995 Bash a really fun watch.

Whenever New Japan visited WCW, the two promotions combined for pretty great shows, and The World Cup Of Wrestling is no different. Several of WCW top workhorses, namely Sting, Savage, and Luger worked multiple matches throughout the evening, each against a NJPW foe and then against each other with Ric Flair in the mix as well, who defeated Savage to win the world title. Also on the card were appearances from up and comers like Jushin Liger, Alex Wright, and Eddie Guerrero, each wrestling against their respective opponents.

7 Halloween Havoc 1989

If not only for posterity’s sake, everyone should seek out is the inaugural Halloween Havoc, if only to watch Doom and Steiner Brothers knock the tar out of each other as that quartet always had fun brawls. The event was headlined by the original Thunderdome. The cage surrounded the ring by two cornermen representing their respective tag teams. Gary Hart tossed in the towel for his team of Terry Funk and The Great Muta against Sting and Ric Flair.

6 Beach Blast 1992

Up until In Your House: Mind Games four years later, Mick Foley held his match with Sting at this event as his greatest match. The two wrestled in a Falls Count Anywhere match at Beach Blast 1992. But that was just the sizzle on a big slab of steak. The Steiner brothers met their match as far as brutality goes when they fought the Miracle Violence Connection to a 30 minute smash fest. Also going 30 minutes was an Iron Match where Rick Rude retained the WCW title against Ricky The Dragon Steamboat.

5 Spring Stampede 1994

When your inaugural PPV is headlined by Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat for the world title, you’re off to an awfully good start. From top to bottom, the Spring Stampede 1994 has some good matches - Flyin Brian and Steven Regal for the TV title and a still-Stunning Steve taking on The Great Muta. If those three matches don’t entice you, there’s always room for a fun Mick Foley brawl when he teamed up with Maxx Payne against The Nasty Boys

4 Halloween Havoc 1993

Halloween Havoc 1993 was a unique mix of old school and what was then-new school. A classic old school match between Ricky Steamboat and Paul Orndorff got the show started followed by two battling Brits, Davey Boy and Steven Regal. Then it was time for two future legends to shine when Stunning Steve took on The Natural Dustin Rhodes. But it was the main event that really stole the show, Vader taking on Cactus Jack in a Texas Death Match, which was probably their greatest match in the feud.

Blitzkrieg was a revolutionary WCW cruiserweight who came and went practically just as fast. He opened Spring Stampede 1999 with Juventud Guerrera in a tremendous highlight reel of a match.

Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman put on the clinic that the two were known for. But the big moment came when all of the hard work and perseverance for Diamond Dallas Page as he ascended to the mountaintop to defeat three legends in one night to become the WCW world champion.

What many fans think is the greatest WCW War Games match ever took place to main event Wrestle War 1992. There were several matches on the undercard that helped to make this event special.

The Steiner Brothers earned a shot at the IWGP tag titles against Takayuki Iizuka and Japanese legend Tatsumi Fujinami. Once again, Brian Pillman revolutionized the light heavyweight division when he defended the title against Tom Zenk.

Strike the main event of Halloween Havoc 1997 - the infamous “age in the cage” between Hogan and Piper off the record. There are two matches on this card that are worth the price of admission alone. Randy Savage took on DDP in a Sudden Death match. But the real star of the show, was the genre defining instant classic between Eddy Guerrero and Rey Mysterio, where both men pulled off moves that no one ever saw before.
