The biggest matches of the year to take place at WrestleMania have a chance to create a legacy for many decades. Fans still talk about the 80s classics like Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat and the 90s classics like Steve Austin vs Bret Hart solely due to the legacy it created at WrestleMania. These shows get new viewers every year as younger fans will watch back historic WrestleMania moments due to the importance.

However, not every match planned to get a big spotlight at WrestleMania will even make it to the show. There have been many matches expected to take place that would see plans changed. The reasons range from an injury to one of the wrestlers, the storyline not working out or another idea making more sense. We will look at some of the interesting ones that missed out on the big stage with ten planned WrestleMania matches that did not happen.

10 Sasha Banks & Bayley vs Trish Stratus & Lita (WM 35)

The most recent instance of a planned match not panning out was to see the Women’s Tag Team Championship belts getting a high-profile bout. WrestleMania was reported to see the first champions of Sasha Banks and Bayley teaming together to defend the titles against the legends Trish Stratus and Lita.

Reports circulated after they teamed together along with Natalya on the Raw after the Evolution PPV. Stratus and Lita were reported to have an agreement to come back for WM season. Plans changed as the legends did not return. Beth Phoenix instead returned to team with Nattie in a four-team match with the Iiconics winning.

9 Brock Lesnar vs Shane McMahon (WM 33)

WWE ran a huge angle at the end of Summerslam 2016 to set up Brock Lesnar’s WrestleMania match the following year at Wrestlemania 33. Following his brutal beatdown of Randy Orton, Shane McMahon came out to protect Orton and confront Lesnar.

The visual of Brock hitting an F5 as Shane laid in the ring in pain looking back at Lesnar closed the show. Plans changed ahead of WrestleMania with Brock requesting WWE bring in Goldberg to run a program with him that culminated at Wrestlemania 33.

8 Shawn Michaels vs Eddie Guerrero (WM 22)

One WrestleMania match that fans badly wish we were able to see would have featured two all-time greats in Shawn Michaels and Eddie Guerrero. WWE wanted another attraction match after Michaels had a classic with Kurt Angle the prior year.

Unfortunately, the passing of Guerrero in late 2005 would obviously remove that match from consideration. Michaels went on to face Vince McMahon and fans remained heartbroken that Eddie was taken from the world too soon.

7 Sheamus vs Daniel Bryan (WM 30)

The journey of Daniel Bryan overcoming all the odds to win the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania XXX over Batista and Randy Orton is a legendary moment that will live forever. However, it was never meant to happen if WWE had their way with the booking.

Bryan was expected to face Sheamus in a lower card match until fans hijacked the shows with chants supporting him. The change would see Bryan entered into the title picture with feuds against Triple H, Batista and Orton culminating in him winning it all.

6 Seth Rollins vs Jason Jordan (WM 34)

Seth Rollins rise to the Universal Championship started one year earlier at WrestleMania 34 when he became the Intercontinental Champion. An impressive win against Finn Balor and The Miz started a great run that saw Rollins amassing momentum moving forward.

WWE’s initial plan for Rollins at Wrestlemania 34 was less impressive as he was expected to face Jason Jordan. The two had a short run as Raw Tag Team Champions that ended with Jordan’s whiny character costing Rollins the match. A backstage promo set up the angle, but Jordan stepped up to deal with an injury and had yet to be cleared.

5 Triple H vs John Cena (WM 23)

The main event of WrestleMania 23 featured John Cena scoring a huge win over Shawn Michaels in a great match. That was not the intended main event heading into WrestleMania season, but things changed after an injury occurred at New Year’s Revolution in January of 2007.

Triple H was the one expected to face off with Cena in a rematch from their first battle one year prior. Since Michaels was part of the D-Generation X team with him and an elite performer, WWE gave him the opportunity instead to put over Cena in the main event.

4 Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels (WM 13)

The backstage rivalry between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels reached the point of no return around the time of WrestleMania 13. It was one year after Hart put over Michaels in their iconic Iron Man match at WrestleMania XII.

Hart was told that Michaels would return the favor in a highly anticipated rematch to even the series. Michaels however refused and claimed he was injured with a retirement that fans remember for the promo line of “losing his smile.” The retirement would end a couple of months after WrestleMania 13, but Hart at least got to deliver one of the all-time greatest matches with Steve Austin as a consolation prize.

3 Batista vs Randy Orton (WM 22 and WM 30)

WWE wanted to set up an important match between former Evolution stablemates Batista and Randy Orton at multiple WrestleMania events. The most memorable one was WrestleMania XXX, but fans rejected the singles match after Batista’s Royal Rumble win forcing the company to add Daniel Bryan to the mix.

However, there was another plan years prior to see the two face off in a top match for the World Championship during WrestleMania 22. Batista suffered an injury that forced him to relinquish the title and plans shifted to Rey Mysterio winning the title over Orton and Kurt Angle.

2 The Undertaker vs Ted DiBiase Jr.

There was not a specific WrestleMania event in mind for this idea, but WWE wanted to build to a huge match between The Undertaker and Ted DiBiase Jr. at some point. Vince McMahon was high on DiBiase due to his look, potential, and pedigree as the son of another legend.

The hope was that DiBiase would rise in the rankings and become a respected heel towards the top of a card. Reports indicated that he was being groomed to eventually end Undertaker’s undefeated WrestleMania streak. DiBiase flopped with his push and the plan would get canceled quickly.

1 Bray Wyatt vs Brock Lesnar (WM 32)

A huge missed opportunity for Bray Wyatt would see his planned match against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 32 canceled. Bray and the rest of the Wyatt Family left Lesnar laying on a couple of shows, including eliminating him at the Royal Rumble.

There was even a match on a WWE Network special with Lesnar defeating Luke Harper to send a message. Brock reportedly did not have much interest in the match with Wyatt and the opponent was changed to Dean Ambrose. Given how much Ambrose hated working with Lesnar, maybe Wyatt lucked out here.
