WrestleMania 33: 15 Matches That Would Make It The Best PPV Of All Time

WrestleMania 33 is already right around the corner. Hard to believe but it is. It won’t be long before WrestleMania storylines start playing out on both Raw and SmackDown Live. Survivor Series has been a great starting point for WrestleMania angles and the starting point is even sooner for some angles. It’s also getting close to that time when WWE fans put on their GM caps and start buzzing about what they would like to see on the WrestleMania card.

Old stars returning to face young lions, WWE Superstars with axes to grind, and dream matches are among the “sugar plums dancing in their heads”. WWE fans run to message boards to share their thoughts on what they feel would make the perfect WrestleMania card. WWE is a funny animal that sometimes has selective hearing. Some of the fans’ wishes come true while others remain a part of their imaginations. WWE likes to please it’s fans but also isn’t afraid to disappoint if it is what they feel is best for business. Regardless, it is always fun for fans at this time of year to start speculating about “The Showcase of the Immortals”. Let’s take a look at 15 Matches That Would Make WrestleMania 33 The Best PPV Of All Time.

17 Finn Balor vs Kevin Owens

via cagesideseats.com / via imgur.com

Finn Balor vs Kevin Owens makes a lot of sense at WrestleMania 33 for a number of reasons. The match would be great without the benefit of a compelling storyline. However, this match has a classic built-in story that has put fans in seats since the humble beginnings of the pro wrestling business. Kevin Owens holds the WWE Universal Championship, which is the title Finn Balor never lost in the ring. Balor once defeated Owens for the NXT Championship. Balor beat Owens once and can do it again to take his title back would be the simple and effective story being told. It would obviously be more compelling if the match were for the Universal Championship. However, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if these two great wrestlers had a simple one on one match at WrestleMania. Great wrestlers having great matches have a way of making fans forget about gold.

16 Rey Mysterio vs Kalisto

via wwe.com / via pinterest.com

Rey Mysterio vs Kalisto is a match that could have a lot value given the right circumstances. Kalisto hasn’t been a factor in WWE for quite some time and is currently on the injured list. However, Kalisto has shown flashes of WWE brilliance and could easily be built back up as a highflying fan favorite. The comparisons between them are obvious and this could be an exciting “past vs present” match. The WWE return of Rey Mysterio would be the big question mark in regard to this match. Mysterio return rumors have been running hot and cold. The fact is that he is a force on the independent pro wrestling scene in the United States and Mexico as well as in Lucha Underground. Unfortunately, Mysterio doesn’t look to be returning to WWE any time soon.

15 The New Day vs The Club vs Beer Money

via pinterest.com / via cagesideseats.com / via twitter.com

The New Day vs The Club vs Beer Money would satisfy hardcore tag team wrestling fans with a match involving arguably three of the best tag teams in the world. WrestleMania 33 would be a great place for this match to happen and the Raw Tag Team Championship would have to be on the line to add some prestige to the match. This is also a match that could make a lot of sense for WWE if they want to send a message that their home grown team of The New Day can hang with the best teams from around the globe. The major sticking point that would prevent the match from happening is a Beer Money reunion. Bobby Roode is currently in NXT but James Storm is under contract to TNA Wrestling. Even if Storm became available, it wouldn’t be a slam dunk that WWE would bring him in to team with Roode. Tag team wrestling fans should not hold their breath waiting for this match to be signed.

14 Rusev vs Samoa Joe

via maxmfofficial.blogspot.com / via wwe.com

Rusev vs Samoa Joe would be a classic “unstoppable force meeting the immovable object” type of match. Rusev and Samoa Joe match up very well from a physical standpoint because they are both built like tanks. They are obviously known for their power game but are a bit underrated as capable mat technicians. Both have proven that they can up their technical game against masters of the mat such as AJ Styles, Seth Rollins, Dolph Ziggler, and Finn Balor. This match might be flying under the radar but could be a potential show stealer at WrestleMania 33. Rusev and Joe have the potential to have one of the all time great big men matches on a big WWE pay-per-view. Joe should be getting a main roster call up soon making this match a definite possibility.

13 Chris Jericho vs Austin Aries

via youtube.com / via wrestlingnews.co

Chris Jericho vs Austin Aries would be a classic heel vs heel match. The insults and banter between these two would be priceless. Jericho’s current heel persona is brilliant and his ability to reinvent himself time and time again is impressive. Chris Jericho and Austin Aries also definitely have what it takes to backup their words inside the ring. Jericho has proven he can put on great matches with anyone but Aries isn’t just anyone. Aries is a great veteran who’s just waiting to get the call up to the main roster from NXT. His call up would be the one obstacle to this match happening at WrestleMania 33. If it does happen, Y2J vs The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived would surely have show stealing potential.

11 The Wyatt Family vs The Hardy Boys

via wallsofjerichoholic.blogspot.com / via twitter.com

The Wyatt Family vs The Hardy Boys would be an extremely buzz worthy match for WrestleMania 33. Bray Wyatt and Matt Hardy were recently at the center of a Twitter feud over “The Final Deletion” being copied by The Wyatt Family on WWE Raw. “Broken” Hardy challenged Wyatt and claimed imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Wyatt countered by saying Hardy wouldn’t have been “Broken” without “The Eater of Worlds” being in the pro wrestling picture. However,WWE return rumors seem to focus more on Jeff Hardy and not Matt. In fact, there hasn’t been much publically mentioned about WWE being interested in Matt Hardy returning. Even if he were to return, there is also a very slim chance that WWE would use the “Broken” character. A Hardy Boys return and smart fans that don’t just forget juicy Twitter feuds might be enough for this match to be a compelling part of WrestleMania 33. Unfortunately, it would be very complicated for this match to become a reality given there are so many moving pieces.

9 John Cena vs Randy Orton

via wwe.com

John Cena vs Randy Orton has been seen numerous times but never at “The Showcase of the Immortals”. They were a part of a triple threat match with Triple H at WrestleMania XXIV but they’ve never squared off one on one at WrestleMania. WrestleMania 33 would be the perfect setting for this classic rivalry. It could even be the setting for the rivalry’s climax. It could be an exciting final chapter to a pro wrestling story that goes all the way back to their days in Ohio Valley Wrestling in the early 2000s. If the chips were to fall into place, the match could also be for the WWE World Championship. A championship match of this caliber is exactly what SmackDown Live needs to help get out from underneath the huge shadow being cast by Raw.

8 Kurt Angle vs Shinsuke Nakamura

via dailyddt.com / via bleacherreport.com

Kurt Angle vs Shinsuke Nakamura would be an international dream match between one of the USA’s all time greats and one of Japan’s all time greats. The two have wrestled each other before but never on a stage like WrestleMania. This match is definitely a long shot for WrestleMania 33. It is unclear if the reigning NXT Champion Shinsuke Nakamura would get a main roster call up in time for a match at WrestleMania 33. Nakamura is more than deserving of a call up but WWE has been extremely careful about making sure the NXT roster remains strong. It is also unclear if the Kurt Angle WWE return rumors are just that. In the meantime, Angle is proving that he can still perform on a high level by taking on some of the best in the world on the independent pro wrestling circuit.

7 Charlotte vs Rhonda Rousey

via wwe.com / via viralthread.com

Charlotte vs Rhonda Rousey would be a dream WWE/UFC cross over match. This match wouldn’t need a championship to help sell it and has the potential to be the most compelling women’s match in WWE history. Cross over matches like Floyd Mayweather vs The Big Show and Muhammad Ali vs Antonio Inoki have a way of capturing the imaginations of fans.In the past, interest has been expressed in Rhonda Rousey wrestling in WWE. There has been push back from UFC about Rousey wrestling an official match for WWE while under contract to UFC. However, the recent cooperation between WWE and UFC that led to the Brock Lesnar vs Mark Hunt fight at UFC 200 is a glimmer of hope that future cooperation could allow this match to take place at WrestleMania 33. UFC also might be more willing to do business with WWE now that Rousey is no longer undefeated.

6 The Miz vs Daniel Bryan

via youtube.com

The Miz vs Daniel Bryan has suddenly become a very hot feud that could make a big time WrestleMania 33 match. The fireworks started in August on an episode of the post SmackDown Live talk show called “Talking Smack”. A worked interview segment turned into a shoot when Daniel Bryan called The Miz a “coward”. The SmackDown Live GM and retired WWE Superstar made things a little too personal by referencing his independent wrestling days and saying The Miz wrestles “the soft WWE style”. The Miz went on an epic tirade that caused Bryan to walk off the set. The feud has continued as a part of SmackDown Live storylines. However, the ultimate payoff would be Bryan lacing up the boots one last time to settle his differences with The Miz inside the ring. WWE doctors will have final say on this match happening or not. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that Bryan will be cleared for a return to WWE action.

5 AJ Styles vs Seth Rollins

via business2community.com / via WWE.com

AJ Styles vs Seth Rollins would be an interpromotional match between arguably two of the best wrestlers in the world. Both have shown that they can take their game to another level and also have a knack for elevating their opponents. It would be extremely exciting to see what they could do in a match against each other on WWE’s grandest stage. For that reason, a championship is not necessary for a match of this magnitude. The potential magic that these two great wrestlers could conjure up together would be the only selling point needed if the match is signed for WrestleMania 33. Styles or Rollins walking into their potential match as a champion would just be an extra added bonus. WWE may have even been testing the waters for a potential pay-per-view showdown between the two. Over the summer,Styles and Rollins were a part of several triple threat matches taking place at WWE Live events across the country.

4 The Undertaker vs Sting

via youtube.com

The Undertaker vs Sting is a match that fans still can’t stop buzzing about. For about the last 20 years, fans have wanted to see a match between “The Deadman” and “The Icon”. For most of those 20 years, the barrier of the two working for different pro wrestling promotions forced fans to file it in the category of “dream match”. However, that barrier was recently bulldozed when Sting and WWE finally agreed to do business together in 2014. The only thing standing in the way of this match becoming reality is a serious neck injury Sting sustained in a match with Seth Rollins at Night of Champions 2015. However, he has hinted that a match with The Undertaker remains at the top of his to do list. The match happening at WrestleMania 33 is a long shot. If the match does happen, it will still have huge drawing power and would be a crowd pleaser. Even at their advanced ages (The Undertaker is 51 and Sting is 57), they still have the ability to tell a great story in the ring.

3 The Rock vs Roman Reigns

via wrestlingnews.co

The Rock vs Roman Reigns is an extremely intriguing option for WWE at WrestleMania 33. The Rock is three years removed from his last significant WrestleMania match, which was a loss to John Cena. Fans would definitely be ready and willing to see The People’s Champion step back into the ring. The Rock, who has nothing left to prove in WWE, could be motivated to return if it were to help put over his cousin, Roman Reigns, at WrestleMania 33. Reigns had been on a bit of a downward spiral as of late in WWE. In a very short period of time, he went from being “The Guy” to being just another WWE big man. However, The Big Dog still has a very big upside and all he might need is a little shine from his mega-star cousin, The Rock.

2 Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg

via cagesideseats.com

Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg is a WrestleMania 33 match that could soon be a reality. That match has already generated a buzz among wrestling fans due to Goldberg’s inclusion in the video game, WWE 2K17. Let’s not forget that Sting’s inclusion in WWE 2K15 led to his match with Triple H at WrestleMania 31. Brock Lesnar and Goldberg have also exchanged words adding more fuel to the Lesnar vs Goldberg rematch fire. A match between two of the most dominant forces in pro wrestling history certainly has big drawing potential. Despite not being in the ring for many years, Goldberg is still a compelling name in pro wrestling similar to names like Hulk Hogan and CM Punk. Many fans also want to see a superior rematch given the circumstances of their controversial encounter at WrestleMania XX in 2004. The WWE atmosphere appears to be just right for Lesnar and Goldberg to lock horns again and make things right.

1 Triple H vs CM Punk

via dailymotion.com

Triple H vs CM Punk at WrestleMania 33 would be a long shot but a huge draw for sure. However, after his UFC defeat, Punk’s WWE return is a little less of the long shot it was a few years ago. The match would be extremely controversial given the way CM Punk left WWE in 2014. The legitimate backstage drama between Punk and WWE would be the kind of realism that fans love and WWE can capitalize on.The match would also be extremely ironic since reportedly Punk left a WrestleMania XXX match with Triple H on the table when he decided to retire from WWE. This could add some more real life heat to an already explosive situation. Punk’s WrestleMania return would elicit a big fan response regardless of his opponent but The Game would be the ideal opponent to make the match a WrestleMania classic.
