WrestleMania 35 saw the very first women’s match to main event WWE’s biggest show of the year. Becky Lynch, Ronda Rousey, and Charlotte Flair worked a Triple Threat Match with the Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championships on the line. It was a worthy encounter to close the show, given not only how over Becky Lynch has gotten, Ronda Rousey’s mainstream star power, and Charlotte Flair’s athleticism and family lineage.

While the match wasn’t necessarily an all-time great WrestleMania main event, it held its own with solid in-ring action and more than a few hidden details that most fans may have missed.

10 10. Charlotte Flair Pays Homage To Her Father At The Great American Bash

Charlotte Flair is no stranger to playing homage to her father, The Nature Boy Ric Flair, with her entrances. She uses an updated version of the same theme music. For WrestleMania 32, she wore a robe made from the original material of the robe her father wore for his last WWE match, eight years earlier at WrestleMania 24.

WWE went a bit more esoteric for WrestleMania 35, with Charlotte arriving at the stadium for her match via helicopter. The concept is a little silly if taken literally, given the implication she got dressed for the ring somewhere else, choppered in, then walked straight from her landing, through the arena, to the ring. The spot paid tribute to an iconic entrance Ric made back in 1985, though, to do battle with Nikita Koloff at the Great American Bash. In each instance, the chopper entrance helped sell one of the Flairs as a major star and high class, with a penchant for making a dramatic entrance.

9 9. Becky Lynch Had A Modest Entrance

WrestleManias have become known for offering major stars elaborate entrances. Indeed, WrestleMania 35 include ed even Finn Balor getting an amped up version of his Demon King intro, not to mention TripleH’s signature elaborate video package into a dramatic ride down to ringside.

The main eventers, accordingly, got their props with Charlotte Flair’s helicopter ride in and Ronda Rousey having Joan Jett play her down the long aisle. As for Becky Lynch, the smokestacks that fire off in the background may have been a bit bigger and greater in number than usual, but that’s about as much special fanfare as she got. While some fans might read that as a slight, it was just as likely a conscious choice to underscore Lynch’s role - not as a corporate chosen one, but rather as an underdog who’d fought her way up through more modest expectations to the top of the division.

8 8. Ronda Rousey Looked More Like Her Old Self

When Ronda Rousey made her way to the ring for WrestleMania 35, she notably had the same look as she’d had for her WrestleMania 34 debut a year earlier. Rather than the black top she has been sporting for most of the last year, or elaborate eye make up she has often worn for PPV matches, This was a bit of a throwback to see her in her white top, and wearing the kilt and leather jacket that pay tribute to Roddy Piper.

The choice for Rousey to dress as such may have been intended to underscore the rebirth of her character. After all, this was the first PPV match she worked as a full-blown heel. The shift may also have been intended to play the connections to Piper, who was the most highly regarded heel from the original WrestleMania main event.

7 7. Charlotte Flair’s Bad Luck With Tables Continues

In the late stages of the main event match, Charlotte Flair took a table bump into the corner. The table did crack, but didn’t break in the dramatic, explosive fashion as WWE surely would have hoped for.

Sadly, this wasn’t the first time that Flair was working a groundbreaking, PPV main event match and had a table’s failure to cooperate risk spoiling the moment. Flair worked the very first main roster women’s PPV main event with Sasha Banks at Hell in a Cell 2016. The climax of the match saw Flair whip Banks into a table more than once, only for it fail to fracture under Banks’s weight. The result was Flair hitting an underwhelming Natural Selection to finish the bout. Bad luck seems to have followed Flair regarding tables in these big match situations.

6 6. Ric Flair Stayed Out Of It

Ric Flair was present for WrestleMania 35, and he made his presence known when he got involved in the Triple H vs. Batista bout. Flair gave an assist to Triple H by handing him a sledgehammer and then wound up distracting The Animal in a way that allowed The Game to nail him with a step up sledgehammer shot into a Pedigree for the win.

From an interesting kayfabe perspective, The Nature Boy didn’t extend the same support to his own daughter in her main event match. To be fair, Flair had a personal issue with Batista based on an attack on Raw that set up the Batista-Triple H feud. In reality, WWE probably kept Flair out of his daughter’s business to keep from muddying the waters, and ensure the first women’s main event kept its female talent front and center.

5 5. Sasha Banks Is Now The Only One Of The Four Horsewomen Of NXT Without A WrestleMania Win

The Four Horsewomen of NXT were a real-life friend group consisting of Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Becky Lynch, and the foursome put on some terrific matches opposite one another during their time in developmental. Of the group, Lynch was the only one who never captured the NXT Women’s Championship. Indeed, upon their arrival on the main roster, it looked as though Lynch would remain the supporting player—the only one not to capture the Raw Women’s Championship within her first year after getting called up, and, after an initial push, largely treated as an afterthought on SmackDown.

This past year has seen Lynch surge, to the point that she’s now arguably the most successful Horsewoman. Also of interest, Banks has become a bit of straggler. Most notably, she’s now the only Horsewoman to have never won a WrestleMania match. Flair pulled off a victory over Banks and Lynch at WrestleMania 32 and Bayley beat Flair, Banks, and Nia Jax at WrestleMania 33, Now Lynch had the biggest win of all at WrestleMania 35, while Banks wound up losing her Women’s Tag Team Championship to the IIconics at the same show.

4 4. Becky Lynch Finally Beats Charlotte Flair In A Triple Threat Scenario

It was no secret in the early going that WWE was pushing Charlotte Flair as a bigger star than Becky Lynch. Indeed, for the WrestleMania 32 Triple Threat between these two and Sasha Banks, it was always a question of whether Flair or Banks would win - Lynch was an afterthought, and it was no big surprise that she wound up tapping to close the match.

Lynch had more momentum going into a SummerSlam 2018 Triple Threat with Flair and Carmella. Indeed, it was coming up short in this match - which Flair won - that set up the heel turn that ultimately got her explosively over. So it was that, after losing two high profile Triple Threats to Flair, Lynch finally got some well-deserved revenge in beating Flair when she pinned Ronda Rousey in the WrestleMania 35 three-way match.

3 3. Charlotte Flair Alternates Wins And Losses At WrestleMania

For over a year after her main roster debut, Charlotte Flair went undefeated on PPV, which included winning her WrestleMania debut over Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch. Indeed, Flair’s knack for winning her biggest matches became a key part of her story with Banks—that Banks could steal the title on TV, but never keep it from the Queen in a proper PPV match.

Bayley would end Flair’s PPV undefeated streak, and go on to ruin her perfect record at WrestleMania before it got off the ground - pinning Flair in a Fatal Fourway at WrestleMania 33. Flair got back on track at WrestleMania 34 with a high profile win over Asuka. However, it looks as though she’s entered an alternating pattern of wins and losses, now with her WrestleMania 35 loss putting her back at a .500 record for the biggest show of the year.

2 2. Nobody's Ready For Asuka('s Record)

Asuka got left out of the highest profile women’s match of all time, and indeed didn’t even thrive in the WrestleMania Women’s Battle Royal, only making it as far as the final three before getting dumped by Sarah Logan, who was in turn eliminated by Carmella for the win.

Nonetheless, Asuka still remains one of the few women who can say she won a PPV main event, alongside, Charlotte Flair’s win at Hell in a Cell 2016, Ronda Rousey’s win at Evolution 2018, and Becky Lynch’s victory at WrestleMania 35. Asuka won the women’s Royal Rumble that closed out the PPV in 2018, as well as the TLC 2018 headliner. Flair or Rousey could have tied Asuka as the only women with two PPV main event wins, but in Lynch besting them, The Empress still stands alone with that record.

1 1. Charlotte Flair Did What Her Father Never Could

Ric Flair is recognized as a sixteen-time world champion, and that includes having captured the WWE Championship twice in 1992. However, despite going so far as to carry the world title into WrestleMania 8, he never actually main evented a WrestleMania, as that honor went instead to Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice, for Hogan’s supposed farewell match that year. The next closest The Nature Boy likely came to main eventing was his own retirement match against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 24. While many agree that emotional bout stole the show, WWE nonetheless went the more traditional route with Edge and The Undertaker main eventing in their World Heavyweight Championship match.

Charlotte Flair can now list herself as a WrestleMania main eventer, something her father never could lay claim to. To be fair, Ric spent a pretty small percentage of his prime in WWE , and probably would have headlined at least one WrestleMania had he come to WWE sooner. Nonetheless, this career accomplishment for Charlotte presents an interesting historical footnote.
