WCW legend Ric Flair and John Cena share the record for most World Championship reigns in the professional wrestling industry with 16 apiece.

But as a wise person once said: Records were made to be broken.

In this list, we'll be factoring in all the major WWE titles as "World" Championships: The WWE, Universal, World Heavyweight, Women's, Divas, Raw Women's, SmackDown Women's, NXT Championship and NXT Women's championships.

We're also going to be realistic with these entries. So superstars over the age of 35 with less than five World Championship reigns won't be on this list. Time simply isn't on their side.

Let's take a look at five superstars who should break the record shared by Flair and Cena, and five who shouldn't for a variety of reasons.

10 Should: Bayley

Bayley

Bayley has won four major championships to date (NXT Women's, Raw Women's and the SmackDown Women's twice). She has established herself as a perennial main event star, so the record of 16 can't be fully ruled out.

Bayley has shined as both a babyface and as a heel. WWE will continue to build the women's division around her talents long-term. She has several factors going her way in the quest to 16.

9 Shouldn't: Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho was a six-time World Champion in WWE. If you include his AEW World Championship reign, that leaves Jericho at seven total reigns.

Jericho is now 50 years of age and only wrestling on a part-time basis. 10 to 15 years ago, he would have been a strong and enticing candidate to break the record of 16. But that time has obviously passed.

Jericho should be the first person to tell you that it doesn't make sense for him to win 10 more championships at this stage of his career.

8 Should: Bray Wyatt

A one-time WWE Champion and a two-time Universal Champion, the soon-to-be 34-year-old has a long way to go. But again, we shouldn't fully rule out Bray Wyatt as a candidate here.

Wyatt has reinvented himself better than any other superstar, and he figures to be in the main event scene over the long run. Longevity will be the key here, and if he can wrestle well into his 50s? Well, 14 more World Championships doesn't sound all that far-fetched now.

7 Shouldn't: Triple H

Triple H is a 14-time World Champion, but his last reign ended five years ago. He hardly wrestles anymore, and it wouldn't make sense for a soon-to-be 52-year-old to win three more major titles at this point of his career.

As is the case with Jericho, Triple H would have been a better candidate to break the Flair-Cena record 10 years ago. But there's no logical scenario in which he suddenly racks up three more major championship victories.

The ship on this potential record-breaker has sailed. WWE should keep his total at 14.

6 Should: Sasha Banks

Sasha Banks

As possibly the biggest star on the WWE women's roster, Sasha Banks can absolutely break the record.

She's only 29 years of age, and she's been one of the company's top main event stars for half a decade now. Banks already has seven major title reigns (NXT Women's, SmackDown Women's and five Raw Women's) on her resume.

Two more major title reigns will put Banks past the halfway point. She's in a far better position than most to break this record.

5 Shouldn't: Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns Heel Daniel Bryan

Roman Reigns' giant singles push began six years ago. He's a five-time World Champion, and he'll turn 36 years of age in May.

So that's obviously a lot of ground to make up, and Reigns' current title reign has lasted seven months now. The longer his title runs last, the harder it obviously is to catch Flair and Cena.

WWE has invested all this time in making Roman Reigns their top heel. He's not about to suddenly endure short title reigns. Even if he's one of the company's marquee stars now, it's impossible to see him winning 12 more major titles from here.

4 Should: Randy Orton

Orton WWE Champion 09

The living legend Randy Orton is a 14-time World Champion, and the Nature Boy himself has expressed a desire to see The Viper smash his record.

Orton will be 41 years of age soon. He still has plenty of time to win three more major championships, and nobody should discount it. Orton has been a top-tier superstar for 17 years and counting. He checks off all the boxes as a deserving candidate to break the record.

3 Shouldn't: Edge

Edge WWE Royal Rumble

The Rated-R Superstar Edge is an 11-time World Champion. But given his age (47), it's practically impossible to see how he could possibly win six more titles before calling it quits.

Edge walked away as an 11-time World Champion back in 2011. He can make it 12 at WrestleMania 37, but even if he does, it just feels like time isn't on his side to win five more. But don't rule out Edge's chances of matching the 14 reigns of Orton and Triple H.

2 Should: Charlotte Flair

Charlotte

Barring an early and unexpected retirement, Charlotte Flair should and likely break the record set by her own father.

Charlotte is already a 12-time World Champion (five SmackDown, four Raw, two NXT Women's and one Diva's). She has all the time in the world to win five more and become a 17-time champion.

WWE has made Charlotte the main star of the women's division for long periods ever since she joined the main roster. Would anybody be shocked if she were to break the prestigious record?

1 Shouldn't: Brock Lesnar

brock lesnar

The Beast Brock Lesnar will be 44 years of age soon. He's an eight-time World Champion (five WWE, three Universal). The math and circumstances - as well as his part-time status -  make 17 World title completely unrealistic.

Over the years, WWE has been criticized for relying too much on part-timers like Lesnar to carry the main event scene. He likely has several more major title reigns in him, but nine more? Zero chance that happens. If he were a full-time superstar, 17 wouldn't have been out of the question. But it certainly is at this phase of his career.
