One issue for WWE during the era of Cena was that they did not have any other stars over at the same level. Cena did play a role in helping and hurting certain careers when working with these performers.

We will look at both sides of the wrestlers to face off with Cena. The ones to benefit got to a higher level in WWE as a superstar as the matches with Cena made fans respect them even more. Find out how each feud shaped the future with five wrestlers that became superstars after working with Cena along with five that suffered.

10 Became bigger star: Daniel Bryan

The Summerslam 2013 main event between John Cena and Daniel Bryan established Bryan as a top star. WWE would not trust Bryan as the WWE Champion, so Randy Orton cashed in to end the title reign within a matter of mere minutes.

Fans however fell in love with Bryan as their next big star and forced WWE to push him as such. Bryan developed strong momentum in 2013, but the Cena feud was the major one to showcase him as a legitimate main eventer. The career of Bryan was changed for the better.

9 Suffered: Bray Wyatt

The spot of having a singles match against John Cena at WrestleMania during his peak was a role any wrestler would have wanted. Bray Wyatt found his way into his first big angle heading into WrestleMania 30 against Cena with the intent of making him a bigger star.

This match unfortunately was just average, and their overall feud did not help Wyatt in the long run. Much of his momentum was lost here and the Cena feud just slowed him down. Bray does seem to be hitting his potential with the new Fiend character, so maybe the two can make up for this disappointment in the future.

8 Became bigger star: Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens had the perfect debut when joining the WWE main roster during his run as NXT Champion. John Cena was the target of Owens as he was able to work with the biggest name in the industry right away. The two had superb chemistry in their few matches together to steal the show every time.

Owens defeated Cena in his first official main roster match cleanly at a time when Cena clean losses never happened. This instantly made Owens a superstar despite the following two losses in their series. Owens has had a strong career in WWE thanks to the great start with Cena.

7 Suffered: The Miz

The Miz defeating John Cena in the main event of WrestleMania 27 is still surprising to remember. WWE went all the way with Miz as a top heel WWE Champion. Miz received the push of a lifetime winning the Money in the Bank briefcase, cashing in to win gold and retaining it at the biggest show of the year.

Unfortunately, the matches between Cena and Miz were highly disappointing. Their WrestleMania 27 bout is considered one of the worst main events in WM history. Miz lost the title to Cena on the following PPV and moved back down into the mid-card for years.

6 Became bigger star: CM Punk

CM Punk was already a star before his big feud with John Cena, but that clearly took him to the next level. This time from 2011 to 2013 saw Punk emerge as the biggest secondary top star behind Cena in the WWE pecking order during Cena’s run as face of the company.

The duality of the fan bases and characters of Punk and Cena made them perfect rivals. Punk faced Cena in the classic Money in the Bank 2011 WWE Championship match to culminate an incredible storyline. This all-time great match with Cena put Punk on the status as a legitimate top name.

5 Suffered: Ryback

Ryback turned heel the night after WrestleMania 29 to start one of the bigger pushes of his career. The new character of Ryback would see him feud with John Cena for a few months over the WWE Championship. WWE wanted Ryback to become a main eventer, but it just didn’t work out.

The matches were forgettable and there was some backstage heat between them. Ryback has spoken out against Cena publicly since leaving WWE. The feud that was supposed to push him into the upper echelon of WWE just erased all his momentum.

4 Became bigger star: AJ Styles

The rise of AJ Styles in WWE came faster than expected. Many fans expected Styles to remain a mid-carder after losing to Chris Jericho a WrestleMania 32, but one feud took him to the next level. Styles turned heel on John Cena leading to a huge feud between them in the summer of 2016.

Cena and Styles stole the show with Summerslam’s 2016 match of the night. Styles beat Cena cleanly and won over many new fans with his performance. The incredible work with Cena influenced WWE into having Styles win the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose a month later.

3 Suffered: Wade Barrett

WWE mishandling the booking of Nexus is a huge regret many wrestling fans wish we could replay. Wade Barrett leading a group of fellow young wrestlers from the first season of NXT created magic during their first attack on John Cena and others.

A long feud between Barrett and Cena would take many twists and turns. Barrett and Nexus unfortunately came out looking weaker after losing to Cena too many times. Once Nexus ended, Barrett never had another realistic path to the top of the card.

2 Became bigger star: Edge

Edge is often named as the top rivalry of John Cena’s career for good reason. WWE always viewed Edge as a future top star, but it did not happen until he won the first Money in the Bank ladder match. Edge cashed in on Cena in an incredible moment.

The two had instant magic together which led to them having a longer feud running through most of 2006. WWE would place Cena and Edge together many more times. Edge saw his career change for the better after working with Cena to prove he belonged at the top level.

1 Suffered: Rusev

Rusev punching John Cena

The first year of Rusev on the main roster featured impressive dominance. Rusev won the United States Championship and developed a reputation for being unbeaten with Lana by his side. WWE went all in by having him feud with John Cena as one of the top matches on the card of WrestleMania 31.

Rusev’s entrance coming out on a tank is all most people remember from the match since it disappointed. The two didn’t have chemistry and Rusev lost all his momentum during this feud. WWE would see Rusev slip from perennial main eventer to mid-carder following the match with Cena.
