Given it's scripted nature, wrestling is the only form of "sports entertainment" that allows its competitors to have input on the outcomes of matches. Now, we're not saying that their input will be accepted, or even heard; after all, in the WWE, only one man's opinion matters, but he can surely be swayed.

Typically, you do as you're told; win or lose, you get paid to do what your boss orders. There have been many cases, though, of wrestlers straight up refusing to lose matches. Even crazier, some even refused to win! It's not common, but it happens. Today, we'll be highlighting interesting cases where wrestlers refused to go with the predetermined outcome.

10 REFUSED TO WIN: Shawn Michaels (vs. Chris Jericho)

The feud between Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels in 2008 was terrific. The two had feuded before, but this was much more personal; Jericho was an awesome heel, throwing HBK through the JeriTron 5000 (a nice little nod to the infamous barbershop incident) and even "accidentally" hitting Michaels' wife.

With Y2J as a heel champion, and having tormented HBK for the longest time, fans expected Michaels to win the ladder match between the two for the World Heavyweight Championship at No Mercy 2008. With his career winding down, HBK could have added one last major title to his resume, as he was penciled in to win. However, he declined, supposedly to return the favor for beating Jericho at WrestleMania XIX now that he was on his way out.

9 REFUSED TO LOSE: Neville (vs. Enzo)

AEW has Enzo Amore to thank for Pac, as the former “King of the Cruiserweights” Neville would probably still be in the WWE if it wasn't for the Certified G. As we all know, the former Neville takes his wrestling very seriously, so he was less than pleased to lose his precious title to Enzo.

Perhaps losing the title meant bigger things for Neville; however, that wasn't the case, as he was scheduled to lose to Enzo yet again on Raw. That was the last straw for a man who thought he was being held back: Neville never again wrestled for the WWE, instead choosing to sit out his contract.

8 REFUSED TO WIN: JBL (vs. Chavo Guerrero)

We always think of JBL as this big bully because... well, he is a big bully, but it's stories like these that show why he was so well-respected in the locker room. Following Eddie Guerrero's passing in 2005, Raw and SmackDown that week were held as tribute shows to honor the late wrestler's career.

Friends and family members performed on those shows. Among them was Chavo Guerrero, who had officially dropped the Kerwin White gimmick in the wake of the tragedy. He was scheduled to face - and lose to - JBL, who convinced management to allow Chavo to pick up the victory to help lighten the mood. There was no better way to honor Eddie!

7 REFUSED TO LOSE: Stone Cold Steve Austin (vs. Brock Lesnar)

Here's another case of a wrestling star leaving the company following their refusal to lose a match. In this instance, though, it was arguably the company's biggest star at the time walking out.

The year is 2002. Steve Austin is still the man. Brock Lesnar is an up-and-c0ming beast looking to establish his dominance. Vince McMahon and company booked Brock to go over Stone Cold on Raw, with no story or buildup. Interestingly, Austin wasn't opposed to losing to Brock; rather, it was the abrupt manner in which he was losing which made him "take his ball and go home."

6 REFUSED TO WIN: Brock Lesnar (vs. Goldberg)

In an interesting twist, Brock Lesnar is actually someone who refused to win a match. Good guy Brock, looking out for Goldberg! Except Brock's plan involved getting his win back at an even bigger stage, for an even bigger prize, so make of that what you will.

Goldberg's return was supposed to be a one-off in conjunction with his appearance in WWE 2K17. Brock would avenge his loss from WrestleMania XX, and that would be it for Goldberg. Lesnar, however, saw money in a longer feud, so instead of just winning at Survivor Series, he got squashed to remind fans of Goldberg's mystique. The final round would take place at WrestleMania 33, where Brock beat Goldberg for the Universal title (poor Kevin Owens).

5 REFUSED TO LOSE: The Shield (vs. John Cena)

While John Cena has been, by all accounts, a respected person and a locker room leader, he has been known to use his pull to get things he wants - just ask Wade Barrett and Alex Riley. So when The Shield came roaring unto the scene, dominating every wrestler and tag team put before them, a collision with John Cena was all but inevitable.

The plan was for Cena to do what he always did and defeat them. The trio, however, had a different idea. Instead, they convinced WWE management to *gasp* actually allow the young guns to beat the unstoppable Super Cena. The Shield definitely proved these guys were cut from a different cloth.

4 REFUSED TO WIN: Kane & Randy Orton (vs. The Undertaker)

Believe it or not, The Undertaker wanted to lose his infamous streak long before Brock Lesnar came to town at WrestleMania XXX. In fact, The Deadman had chosen two individuals prior to The Beast to defeat him: his kayfabe brother, Kane, and The Legend Killer, Randy Orton. However, both refused to become streak breakers in consecutive years.

First up was Kane, who refused to lose to 'Taker at WrestleMania XX. Next up was Randy Orton at WrestleMania 21; Orton had become the youngest World Champion ever in 2004, but an ill-advised face turn killed all momentum he had built up. Even though he was offered the win against The Undertaker, Orton refused, claiming the pressure of this win coupled with his main event run flop would be too much to handle.

3 REFUSED TO LOSE: Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels (vs. Each Other)

We're happy these two made up, because boy oh boy, did Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels really dislike each other. After their WrestleMania XII epic, which HBK won, a rematch was planned for 'Mania the following year, where Bret Hart would get his win back.

That's when Shawn "lost his smile" - a supposed injury kept him out of the planned rematch. While we can't say for sure, there have been enough stories that can confirm Shawn Michaels was ducking Bret, refusing to lose to The Hitman. Bret returned the favor years later, though things didn't quite go exactly as planned for him. Although he refused to lose to Shawn at Survivor Series 1997, a certain screwjob took place - and the rest, as they say in this cliché, is history.

2 REFUSED TO WIN: Eddie Guerrero (vs. Batista)

Before his untimely passing, Eddie Guerrero was feuding with Batista over the World Heavyweight title on SmackDown. Not only was he the number one contender, but Latino Heat was scheduled to win the match and the title. Eddie, however, refused, insisting someone else get the opportunity.

Whether this was supposed to happen in the planned triple threat match between Batista, Eddie and Randy Orton, or at a later time, is unknown. We've all heard the rumors about Eddie's supposed match with Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 22, so who knows what could've been.

1 REFUSED TO LOSE: Hulk Hogan (vs. Shawn Michaels)

When we're feeling blue, we always throw this match on just to watch Shawn Michaels oversell every little thing. Why did he do it? Because he was not pleased with the Hulkster's creative control, brother.

The feud between Hulk and HBK wasn't supposed to be a one-off; they were each supposed to get a win in this battle of wrestling legends. Hogan, however, wouldn't have it; he refused to lose to Michaels. With full creative control in his contract, Hulk got his way, and HBK did everything possible to show us how he felt about the situation, which was a big, fat joke.
