WWE is a like a circus behind the scenes, and a lot of that has to do with the amount of employees hired by the company. Forget about the days of Vince McMahon, Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco writing the entire show poolside at some Motel, today the company has an entire team of writers scribbling up scripts the day of an event just hours before going live.

With so many employees, fans can get lost in who works for the company. In this article, we will include various names working behind the scenes. Some are now backstage due to injuries, working as agents. We also have examples of others that have grown to promising positions backstage. In some cases, they’re making a bigger impact backstage than their in-ring careers.

We will also take a unique look at other promotions that employ former WWE talent backstage. With AEW launching, we can expect various names to join the backstage team in the next couple of months. In fact, in this article, we already have two noteworthy names that joined, one that’s actually a really close friend of Triple H! We will also take a look at Ring of Honor, Lucha Underground, House of Hardcore and the new and improved Impact Wrestling.

Enjoy the article folks, and like always be sure to share it with a friend. Without further ado, let’s go backstage in and out of the WWE taking a look at former wrestlers working behind the scenes.

20 WWE - Matt Hardy (Road Agent & Ambassador)

via Twitter

He might not be in the ring nowadays, however, WWE is still making use of Matt Hardy, especially given his star power. Wisely, he is used behind the scenes and as an ambassador. According to WWE.com, Hardy was used as the company's rep during a promotional tour in India during the end of November, 2018.

Along with promotional work, he is also used sporadically backstage as a road agent helping to put together matches. For those who are wondering, his in-ring career isn’t over and according to his recent Twitter claims, he is due back very soon.

19 Other Promotions - Brandi Rhodes (AEW Chief Branding Officer)

via Wrestling Inc

Get ready, because this is really about to go down as of May with AEW booking their first event. Not only is the brand currently stacking the roster but the company is also filling the behind the scenes with some brilliant wrestling minds.

One of them, is Brandi Rhodes who is said to be quite brilliant away from the camera. She will be the Stephanie McMahon of the brand, working behind the scenes to promote the company globally as best she can. As for an on-screen role, not to worry, she will be on-camera as well.

18 WWE - Jeremy Borash (NXT and NXT UK Producer)

via Instagram

Thanks to Triple H’s willingness to evolve, WWE is no longer petrified when it comes to snatching those associated with the Impact brand. Jeremy Borash worked with TNA for more than a decade, becoming a driving force behind the scenes.

Needing to give up some of his duties, Hunter hired Borash who is currently serving as his number two with both NXT brands at the moment. Whenever you see Triple H with NXT, in all likelihood, Borash isn’t too far away. We assume that once Hunter gets more involvement on the main roster, Borash will foresee the NXT product.

17 Other Promotions - Billy Gunn (AEW Producer)

via Instagram

“I don’t know a lot about what’s going on. I know I’m the only producer they have right now, so my role as of right now is just agent. I might work a little bit, also. I might be talent too, which is OK with me.”(Source Mandatory)

That’s what Billy Gunn had to say pertaining to his new role during an interview on Busted Open Radio. That was a sneaky get for AEW and one that deserves a lot of attention. Given his vast experience and past with NXT, he will bring a lot to the table behind the scenes.

16 WWE - Road Dogg (Lead SmackDown Live Writer)

via Twitter

For some fans, it might be hard to believe that both Road Dogg and Billy Gunn have such prominent positions within the wrestling industry considering their harsh words for the WWE hierarchy ("we’re looking at you Hunter") in the past.

As they say, business is business and Road Dogg has done a great job in his role as the lead SmackDown writer. A great thing about Road Dogg is he isn’t afraid to answer fan concerns online either. He’s currently thriving in the role as SmackDown continues to enjoy a massive boom period.

15 Other Promotions - Gail Kim (Impact Producer)

via Instagram

WWE's loss was Impact’s gain. Unsatisfied with her character direction, Gail Kim decided to leave WWE. The company was in a different place back then, especially when it came to the role of women.

Kim added to her legacy with a dominant run with Impact. She’s without a doubt, the greatest female performer to ever lace boots for the company. Now retired, she continues to make an impact (no pun-intended) as a producer and trainer behind the scenes. Impact’s getting a lot better and Kim has a hand in that.

14 WWE - Ranjin Singh (Assignment Editor/Lead Writer)

via Twitter

Who could have predicted that The Great Khali’s manager would become one of the most influential faces behind the scenes? Formely known as Ranjin Singh, he now goes by his real-name of David Kapoor.

He has a job millions of fans would love to have as lead writer. Some might argue how good of a job he has done in the role but he must be doing something right given that he maintains the gig years later. Surely, we won’t see him in a managerial role again as he’s a lot better off backstage.

13 Other Promotions - Tommy Dreamer (House Of Hardcore Chairman)

via Instagram

Back in the ‘90s, Tommy Dreamer was also influential behind the scenes, aiding Paul Heyman with ECW. Although that concept went south, he’s back at it again, this time with his new promotion House of Hardcore.

He draws decent sized crowds and a lot of that has to do with his past connections, getting a lot of former WWE talent to appear on his program such as Big Cass and Jack Swagger. The show also plays on Twitch which is a pretty big deal. Along with running operations backstage, Dreamer also works as a talent.

12 WWE - Jason Jordan (Agent)

via TPWW

The future remains unknown for Jason Jordan. After various medical tests, we’re still unsure as to what the future holds. Wisely, WWE doesn’t want this young talent to stay at home and sulk at such a devastating injury. Instead, he is backstage at every RAW show with the boys serving as an agent.

Given his expertise in tag matches, we have reason to believe Jason might be helping set the stage for those types of matches. Surely, he would rather be in the ring but it’s a pretty cool alternative for time being nonetheless.

11 Other Promotions - Jimmy Jacobs (Impact Writer and Producer)

via Sporting News

With AEW launching, perhaps nobody is more satisfied than Jimmy Jacobs. Of course, Jacobs got his release papers from WWE following a selfie post of himself and the Bullet Club more than a year ago.

It didn’t take long for Jacobs to find work again as he was instantly hired by Impact as both a writer and producer. Like Kim earlier, Jacobs is very influential when it comes to the Impact turnaround. It remains to be seen if he will stay put once his deal expires or if he will join AEW as a writer. Either way, that’s a good problem to have.

10 WWE - D-Von Dudley (Producer)

via Twitter

Unlike his partner Bubba, D-Von Dudley stayed true to his word, retiring from the in-ring aspect of the business for good. It was time to move on and Dudley was well aware. Today, he remains with the company but instead of getting the tables, he’s calmly seated in front of one behind the scenes at the gorilla position.

D-Von helps set up the show in a producer role.. It must be a stressful job sitting across Vince McMahon every Monday but D-Von appears to be thriving in the new position.

9 Other Promotions - Joey Mercury (ROH Producer)

via Twitter

Joey Mercury was a surprising WWE release considering his contributions behind the scenes. Not only was he well liked but Mercury was the brains behind The Shield, arguably the greatest faction of the last decade.

He decided to leave the business wanting to fulfill an itch. That itch was climbing back in the ring, working alongside the likes of his former partner John Morrison. Along with sporadic in-ring appearances, he also works behind the scenes as a producer for ROH. Given his WWE experience, that’s a big deal for Ring of Honor.

8 WWE - Serena Deeb (PC Trainer)

via YouTube

Released from WWE due to off screen antics, Serena Deeb could have easily called it a career. In fact, that’s what most fans likely assumed, but she didn't. She kept the dream alive working around the world for years. WWE took notice and offered her a spot in the Mae Young Classic tournament.

Although her involvement was brief she got something so much better in return, and that was a WWE deal as a Performance Center trainer behind the scenes. Given her experience, she deserves the backstage gig.

7 Other Promotions - Vampiro (Lucha Underground Producer)

via Instagram

Back in his heyday, Vampiro was that character that could have been so much more. Sting, unwilling to do the job led to his demise, which was such a shame considering the potential of that gimmick.

Believe it or not, he’s still stepping inside the squared circle nowadays, although sporadically. His skill-set might be better behind the scenes as he continues to serve as the producer for Lucha Underground. The company might be the most underrated in the wrestling world and a lot of that has to do with Vampiro’s unique vision for the brand.

6 WWE - Tyson Kidd (Agent)

via Twitter

Tyson Kidd sustained a devastating neck injury following a dark match against Samoa Joe. Not only did it end his career but the injury was life-threatening as well.

Although it was a harsh reality for Kidd to face, he is now back with the company travelling to TV on a weekly basis. Kidd isn’t just chilling around carrying Natalya’s bags, he’s putting in the work as an agent, aiding the likes of Seth Rollins backstage. It is said that Kidd is currently considered WWE's top agent.

5 Other Promotions - Jerry Lynn (ROH Producer)

via YouTube

He compares himself to Randy the Ram and we certainly can’t deny the similarities between the two. At the age of 55,  Jerry Lynn just can’t leave the business behind, still holding a passion for what he does.

He served as a guest trainer at the PC just a year ago. He works that gig full-time nowadays behind the scenes with Ring of Honor. Lynn also serves a purpose as a backstage producer for the company. Given his 30-plus  years in the business, he’s a valuable contributor to the promotion.

4 WWE - Arn Anderson (Agent)

via Wrestling News Source

Arn Anderson is another veteran who started wrestling in the early '80s. He knows all the ins and outs when it comes the business. When he’s not delivering a thunderous Spinebuster to Dolph Ziggler, he’s working behind the scenes as an agent, helping set up matches.

Given his tag team expertise, Anderson is a valuable name in setting up these types of matches. He remains a backstage presence backstage to this day and we hope that continues.

3 Other Promotions - Josh Matthews (Impact Senior Director Of Digital Media)

via YouTube

A Tough Enough recruit, Josh Matthews wasn’t blessed with size, therefore WWE gave him a backstage gig. Following his release, Matthews constantly bashed WWE, not only for their product, but treatment of others.

Due to his harsh words, he became a natural heel with Impact, even taking part in the in-ring product. He maintains a lesser on-screen role nowadays as the backstage Senior Director of Digital Media. No matter what fans think of the guy, he did well for himself since parting ways with McMahon.

2 WWE - Billy Kidman (Producer)

via Twitter

Billy Kidman is another one of those nostalgia acts that could have been so much more. Nonetheless, he enjoyed a stellar career as a fabulous Cruiserweight wrestler with both WCW and WWE.

Nowadays, he works the gorilla position across from Vince McMahon. Kidman has the stressful task of making sure everything flows correctly. Kidman has the exact times of all the segments. One can imagine how stressful things can get when a segment runs too long. With RAW ending at 11:00pm on the nose, Kidman must be sweating a bit under that suit every week.

1 The Jackal (Vice-President Of Impact Wrestling)

via News Week

We conclude the article with Don Callis aka The Jackal aka Cyrus aka a bunch of other names.

Chris Jericho has said it time and time again; Callis has done a phenomenal job at bringing Impact back up to a respectable wrestling promotion. In fact, during a recent Talk is Jericho episode, Y2J claimed he almost joined the company given Don’s vision and money offer. No doubt, we might see Impact snatch up a lot more wrestlers given this new perception from the likes of respected names like Jericho.
