2019 is winding down with another year of WWE content in the books. There were quite a few drastic character changes throughout the entire year. Wrestlers have switched back and forth through the face and heel characters for the betterment of their characters. Some clearly worked better than others and provided memorable moments that fans will remember beyond the year.

We will look at both the best face turns and heel turns that went down in 2019. The heel turns allowed wrestlers to have more freedom with the ability to get heat and do cooler actions. Fans are hard to win over with a face turn, but quite a few wrestlers made it work. All the changes led to the huge factors on Raw, Smackdown and NXT. These are the five best face turns and five best heel turns of 2019 for WWE.

10 Turned Face: Dean Ambrose

The heel turn of Dean Ambrose in 2018 ended up being a huge disappointment. Ambrose made it clear he wasn’t going to re-sign with WWE when his contract expired in April of 2019. WWE decided it was worth it to have a final Shield reunion before he left.

Ambrose tried to turn down Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins from their idea of getting the band back together. An attack from the heel trio of Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley and Baron Corbin changed his mind. Ambrose returned to the ring to save his brothers and brought back The Shield in a great moment.

9 Turned Heel: Sasha Banks

The return of Sasha Banks from a long absence would see her turn heel by attacking Becky Lynch and Natalya. Banks left the company after WrestleMania 35 and returned almost five months later on the Raw after Summerslam.

Natalya was cutting an emotional promo when she assumed her friend came out to show support. Banks instead blindsided her and removed a wig to show her hair, which was now dyed a villainous blue. Lynch came out to defend Natalya and was brutally attacked by Banks with a steel hair. Sasha was instantly a hot act as a heel.

8 Turned Face: Johnny Gargano

Johnny Gargano’s heel run in NXT was shortly lived after he teamed with Tommaso Ciampa to reform DIY. The end of their time together would see Gargano prevent Ciampa from attacking him and delivered the offense instead.

Fans ate it up, with Gargano getting back on track as one of the most beloved stars in NXT. Gargano clearly was a beloved figure heading into an NXT Championship with Ciampa, but the match never happened. That didn’t take away from the great face turn of Gargano.

7 Turned Heel: Finn Balor

The NXT return of Finn Balor shocked everyone since it was unprecedented for a main roster star to move back. However, WWE wanted to present NXT as a bigger show with the USA Network time slot against AEW on Wednesday nights.

Balor surprised the fans even more when he turned on Johnny Gargano a few weeks later. The heel turn gave fans a glimpse at the character Finn had in New Japan as the leader of the Club. Balor seems to be having more fun as a heel and should be in for a major 2020.

6 Turned Face: Alexa Bliss

The start of the tag team between Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross convinced fans that Bliss was going to stab Cross in the back at some point in the future. Alexa’s heel character has always been quite selfish, and Nikki seemed overly excited about having her first friend on the main roster.

In an unexpected twist, the expectations of Bliss doubling down on her heel character would be incorrect. Alexa instead turned face by strengthening her friendship with Cross. The two are still together as a team to end 2019 with a place in the women’s tag team title picture.

5 Turned Heel: Ronda Rousey

WrestleMania 35 featured a historic first-ever all-women’s main event between Ronda Rousey, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch. Rousey was getting booed for month despite playing a face role since fans preferred Lynch during the angle.

WWE would have Rousey turn heel by absolutely destroying Lynch in the ring. The episode of Raw ended with Rousey stepping on the face of Lynch while staring down Flair. Rousey’s hits looked brutal as the level of realism was shown in the heel turn.

4 Turned Face: Tommaso Ciampa

The injury to Tommaso Ciampa forced him to vacate the NXT Championship heading into TakeOver: New York on the night before WrestleMania. Ciampa’s heel heat ended with documentary videos looking at his recovery and family life.

The official face turn of Ciampa came shortly after Johnny Gargano defeated Adam Cole to win his first NXT Championship. Gargano would see Ciampa sneak up behind him on the stage like many attacks in prior battles. Ciampa instead hugged Gargano to a huge pop, adding to the moment.

3 Turned Heel: AJ Styles

AJ Styles spent a few years as a top face on Smackdown before moving to Raw in the superstar shakeup. The new show gave Styles a chance to show off a new character. Following a loss in a highly competitive match to Ricochet, Styles lost part of his prior character.

A heel turn would see Styles attack Ricochet by reforming The Club with Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. All three wrestlers have been a great trio together with their chemistry going back to the days of the Bullet Club. Styles seems more comfortable in the heel role that led to a great United States Championship reign.

2 Turned Face: Kevin Owens

WWE struggled to define Kevin Owens’ character in the first half of the year. Owens returned from an injury in March as a face for the first time on the WWE main roster. A title shot against Daniel Bryan ended his run on top as Kofi Kingston’s momentum changed WWE’s plans.

Owens returned to the heel role when turning on Kingston and started treading water again. An amazing promo running down Shane McMahon and his presence on Smackdown turned Owens back into a face the right way. Fans started to cheer him on, and he is ending 2019 as arguably the top face on Raw.

1 Turned Heel: Bayley

Baley's heel turn was something many fans never expected to come after the wholesome start to her successful career as a face. Bayley, unfortunately, never could capture the same magic on the main roster and 2019 would see her finally turn heel.

Becky Lynch was attacked by Bayley as she aligned with her best friend Sasha Banks with vicious chair attacks. Bayley’s second phase of her heel turn saw her taking down the inflatable tube men, getting a new hairstyle and a different presentation. The year is ending with Bayley as a dominant Smackdown Women’s Champion and a heel to fear.
