The timing of a world championship win can play a huge role in the success of the title reign. Wrestlers winning a title too early can cause many issues. Fans have turned against talents getting too much too soon and the wrestlers have been exposed as not having the experience needed to thrive. The opposite scenario of a wrestler winning too late can see the audience no longer wanting it.

WWE has contributed to instances of both unfortunate situations playing out. We will look back at the memorable moments of wrestlers winning a major title too early or too late. Some wrestlers would rebound and find relevance after the tough title reigns. Others would fall apart and never recover. Find out just how the scenarios went down. These are five times WWE made someone world champion too early and five times they did it too late.

10 Too early: Sheamus

Sheamus received a monster push early in his career. WWE saw something special in him and wasted no time pushing him to the top. Sheamus would shock the world by defeating John Cena in a TLC match to win the WWE Championship just a few months into his main roster debut.

The title reign didn’t work to establish him as a top star. Fans knew little about Sheamus and the quick title win showed nothing about his personality or character. Sheamus’ various world title reigns never would find success either as he was a better mid-carder.

9 Too late: Booker T

The first world title run for Booker T in WWE came about five years into his run. A transition into the King Booker character allowed him to get a main event run as a heel. WWE trusted Booker enough to win the World Champion on the Smackdown brand.

Booker did a solid job with the title reign, but it never had the importance fans hoped to get from his first WWE championship run. WWE missed the chance to have the big Booker win at WrestleMania 19 against Triple H.

8 Too early: Diesel

Kevin Nash’s rise in WWE as Diesel saw him start out as Shawn Michaels’ heel bodyguard. WWE pulled off the face turn and instantly pushed Diesel to the top. Fans were stunned when Diesel defeated Bob Backlund shortly into his face run to become the WWE Champion.

Diesel struggled to make an impact in the same way Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels did before and after his title reign. It was viewed as a disappointment at the time as WWE regretted pulling the trigger so quickly.

7 Too late: The Great Khali

The Great Khali had relevance in WWE over the first few months of his debut on the main roster. Fans were in awe of his size during his attacks on The Undertaker. Khali getting such an advantage over a beloved icon made him a credible heel.

Unfortunately, the wrestling matches are what led to everyone losing interest in him. Khali’s larger size and slower speed prevented him from keeping up with his peers. The eventual World Championship of Khali came when the title was vacated. Fans already lost interest in Khali to doom the title reign.

6 Too early: Jinder Mahal

Jinder Mahal received a massive push in 2017 when WWE was looking for new stars on Smackdown. The fan base was shocked when Mahal was upgraded from an enhancement talent to a main eventer. WWE didn’t even try to establish him before the big win.

Mahal received a #1 contender’s match slot and won it to earn a title shot against Randy Orton. The win over Orton pushed Mahal to the top of the heel side of Smackdown. Jinder struggled to gain momentum and the title reign was viewed as a bust. WWE moved him back into the lower card when he lost it.

5 Too late: Rey Mysterio

The first WWE Championship win of Rey Mysterio came in 2011 in a strange situation. CM Punk left in storyline after winning the title from John Cena at Money in the Bank. WWE set up a tournament with Mysterio winning to become the new replacement WWE Championship.

Cena however would defeat Mysterio later in the same night ending his title reign within hours. Mysterio could have been a great WWE Champion with a title run in his younger years. There was a World Championship reign on Smackdown in 2006, but he was booked poorly at the time.

4 Too early: Big Show

WWE had high hopes for Big Show when jumping ship from WCW in 1999. The early months saw him struggle to get acclimated to the new surroundings. Big Show would eventually get a bigger push as the year winded down.

Steve Austin missing time with an injury saw Big Show replace him in a major match. The win for Big Show made him the WWE Champion before he was ready for the role. Fans never believed in him and WWE even ended the reign after a few weeks losing it back to Triple H on Raw.

3 Too late: Rob Van Dam

Rob Van Dam was one of the most popular stars in WWE during the early 2000s, but he was always passed over for a WWE Championship reign. Fans loved the work of Van Dam in the ring along with his laid-back cool personality.

WWE finally gave him a chance as the WWE Champion and ECW Champion when the ECW brand was relaunched. RVD getting pulled over for possession marijuana forced WWE to suspend him and end the title reigns. It still came too late as Van Dam’s peak popularity was in 2002.

2 Too early: Randy Orton

The shocking World Championship win for Randy Orton at Summerslam 2002 over Chris Benoit could have made him a star. Unfortunately, his title reign turned out to be a huge disappointment. Orton turned heel when Triple H and Evolution stabbed him in the back.

The feud between Orton and Triple H was a disaster. Orton lost the championship at the next PPV and fell out of the title picture for a while until reverting to another heel run. The moment of Orton winning the World Championship was fun, but the title reign itself proved he won it too early.

1 Too late: Goldberg

WWE dropped the ball with Goldberg during his first stint in the company. Goldberg was known for the dominant destruction of beating his opponents within a few minutes. WWE did not book him that and had him lose his first title shot in the Elimination Chamber match getting pinned by Triple H.

Goldberg lost his mystique and never recovered from it. The eventual World Championship win came his way, but the moment lacked the results WWE expected since it came too late. Goldberg would leave the company after one year before making his return in 2016.
