During a WWE NXT Takeover: WarGames Media Call this week, Triple H revealed what kind of changes there will be to the first WarGames match in almost 20 years. He also mentioned that he wants to honor the legacy of Dusty Rhodes.
Triple H said that given the fact that WarGames hasn't happened in so long, they will take the time to modify it in order to make sure things make sense. He also said that there won't be a roof on the cage, like there was in the past, because he doesn't want to limit the event that way.
Here's what Triple H said, according to Wrestle Zone.
HHH: Anytime you’ve had twenty years since you did something you have the opportunity to do it but do it in a slightly modified way. Whether that’s making it better? I don’t want to say things needed to be fixed but I think there were a few things that we had concerns about. We wanted to change those, tweak things up and it works for us in this three team scenthe way the storyline was written. When the opportunity came up to do WarGames the storyline naturally fit with the three groups being in there. Does that change the initial concept? Yeah, in some ways but to me it’s about WarGames and teams going to war. That’s really what this storyline entails. We didn’t have teams of five. You’d have to mix things up and kind of hodge podge some things. As far as some of the components of the match like putting a roof on it and things like that? We aren’t going to have a roof. I think it’s a little bit limiting. The style has changed. I am not saying nobody isn’t going to do it in this match but I think going forward as to what WarGames becomes. I try to think about the future. Arn Anderson wasn’t doing moonsaults off the top of the cage. There’s a difference in how the business is done and I think this allows them a different opportunity to do some things.
The last WarGames that took place was on Sept. 4, 2000. It was during WCW Monday Nitro and featured Team Russo, which was made up of Kevin Nash, Jeff Jarrett, Scott Steiner, Vince Russo, and the Harris Brothers. They defeated Sting, Goldberg, Booker T, and KroniK after Nash left the Triple Cage with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship belt. This meant he was able to keep the title at the time.
Now, 17 years later, World Championship Wrestling no longer exists after WWE bought them out and the sport of wrestling is also different with a new crop of rising stars.
The new WarGames will go down this coming Saturday at NXT TakeOver: WarGames in Houston, Texas and it will feature three teams of three men that will battle one another inside a caged ring.
The first group that will part take in the event are SAnitY, which consists of Alexander Wolfe, Eric Young, and Killian Dain. They will face The Undisputed Era, which includes Adam Cole, Bobby Fish, and Kyle O'Reilly as well as the final group, The Authors of Pain, that include Akam and Rezar with Roderick Strong.
This should be a heck of an event. NXT seems to always bring some of the most entertaining wrestling events and we can't wait. Of course, you will be able to watch NXT TakeOver: WarGames on WWE Network.
