Comedy characters are certainly underrated, and they often get overshadowed in the battle between heels and babyfaces. Comedy characters add a different dimension to the product, entertaining the fans with some hilarious segments and acts.

Comedy gimmicks aren't easy to play, especially in front of a live crowd. Some wrestlers have failed to get genuine reactions from the crowd if they don't have the charisma to do it. On the other hand, some have surpassed expectations. Furthermore, there are wrestlers who were main event level Superstars, but they struggled to successfully pull off a comedic gimmick.

10 Made Work: Damien Sandow

Damien Sandown had a decent run during his four-year stint in WWE, where he had a couple of accolades, including the Money in the Bank briefcase. Nevertheless, the best part of his WWE run was as an impersonator.

He immensely got over when he associated with The Miz and called himself Damien Mizdow. Not only he adeptly emulated The Miz but also did some funny things in the ring to entertain the audience. His comedy gimmick got so popular that he won the 'LOL Moment of Year' Slammy Award as a stunt double of the A-Lister.

9 Flopped: James Ellsworth

James Ellsworth received attention for his expression as an enhancement talent, who got squashed by Braun Strowman. Subsequently, WWE hired him, and it was obvious that he would become a comedy character.

Initially, he was put in the WWE Championship picture against AJ Styles. His ridiculous acts were nowhere funny, and he ruined some good matches with unwanted interferences. WWE also paired him with Carmella later, but it didn't help him to get over either.

8 Made Work: The New Day

Well, there haven't been many comedy gimmicks better than The New Day in recent years, which is why they are one of the successful tag teams in the history of the company. The trio of Xavier Woods, Big E, and Kofi Kingston never fail to entertain with their hysterical acts and promos.

From throwing pancakes and Booty Os, wearing unicorn horns to dancing on their theme song, The New Day leave no stone unturned to make every segment comedic gold. Although Big E has separated from The New Day recently, Woods and Kingston are continuing their gimmicks on RAW.

7 Flopped: El Torito

el torito

El Torito signed for WWE in 2013, but he started appearing regularly at the beginning of 2014. He joined hands with Los Matadores, and he also had a noteworthy rivalry with Hornswoggle, who was another short wrestler like El Torito.

Given his stature, WWE primarily wanted him to have a comedy gimmick, but it failed miserably because the Mexican Superstar wasn't used to cut promos. His short-lived WWE career didn't last beyond two years.

6 Made Work: The Hurricane

Watching a superhero character in the ring was certainly an out-of-box idea, but Hurricane made it work. As a matter of fact, he was one of the most successful comedy gimmicks from the Ruthless Aggression Era.

Riding high on his popularity, he attained significant success in his WWE career. Besides winning singles titles, he also won the World Tag Team Championship, and most importantly, he pinned The Rock once.

5 Flopped: Gillberg

gillberg

Gillberg was a parody gimmick of Goldberg, who was the leading name of WCW during the Monday Night War. Unlike Goldberg, Gillberg was half of his size, and he was introduced to take shots at the WCW legend.

Gilberg had a similar tattoo as well as an entrance like Goldberg. While Goldberg had a winning streak, Gillberg would lose matches every week. He even shared the ring with Goldberg when the latter was a WWE Superstar in 2003. In all honesty, the Gillberg gimmick was cringe, and mocking one of the biggest names in professional wrestling wasn't a wise decision from WWE.

4 Made Work: R-Truth

R-Truth is possibly the best comedy character of the current WWE product, which is why he is already an astonishing 46time 24/7 Champion and the present holder of the belt, which has taken his gimmick to new heights. Whenever R-Truth is seen on TV with the title, he never fails to make fans laugh.

Truth calls John Cena his childhood hero, even though the latter is younger than the former. R-Truth's comic timing is so good that he even made Brock Lesnar laugh last year.

3 Flopped: The Viking Raiders

A myriad of fans might be startled to see the name of The Viking Raiders here, but they have now turned into comedy gimmicks, especially this year. From being one of the most dominant tag teams to getting featured in random comedy sketches, the downfall of these Vikings has been catastrophic.

The Viking Raiders delivered some comedy sketches with The Street Profits while they were feuding this year, notably a basketball contest as well as an ax-throwing competition, which weren't funny at all. As Ivar is out of action due to injury now, Erik wandered in the 24/7 Title picture before disappearing from WWE TV completely.

2 Made Work: Santino Marella

Santino_Marella

Santino Marella was arguably one of the greatest comedic characters to step foot in the ring and hence, he was loved by fans. Even though he wasn't a serious gimmick, he won titles, including two Intercontinental Titles and one US Title.

He produced innumerable comedy segments. His finishing move, The Cobra, itself was hilarious, and he would always create hype while delivering it. Dressed as a woman, he won the Miss WrestleMania Battle Royal match at WrestleMania 25.

1 Flopped: 3 MB

3 mb

It might be hard to believe that 3MB, who were jobbers, contained two eventual WWE Champions. The stable was formed in 2012, and it didn't last beyond two years.

While the members of 3MB were funny, especially Heath Slater, they often went overboard with their acts. Given the talent of those three men, they shouldn't have formed this joke of a faction in the first place.
