WWE Extreme Rules returns once again this weekend, and while some of the stipulations may not get your motor running, it's certainly looking like a pretty intriguing card. From the world title matches to the return of The Undertaker and beyond, it seems like there's going to be something for everyone.

With it being 10 years since the concept of the pay-per-view first led to an actual 'Extreme Rules' show, we thought it'd be fun to take a trip down memory lane and look back at some of the craziest stipulations to have existed. Some are good, and some are... well, you know.

10 Samoan Strap

The Samoan culture will always hold a special place in the heart of many WWE fans, mainly because of just how many Samoans have come through the doors of the company over the years. One man, back in the noughties, who didn’t get enough credit for his work was Umaga.

The man known as the Bulldozer came within inches of winning a world title with WWE on multiple occasions, but was never quite able to get himself over the finish line. Back in 2009, he took part in a pretty intriguing Samoan Strap match at Extreme Rules, in which he was defeated by none other than CM Punk.

9 Tag Team Country Whipping

Sometimes there are matches that you just wish you could erase from your memory, but unfortunately, pro wrestling doesn’t work like that. Back in 2011, Michael Cole was in the middle of a feud with Jerry Lawler, which saw him beat The King in his first WrestleMania match.

This was, for some reason, a rivalry that extended through to Extreme Rules, when Michael Cole enlisted the help of Jack Swagger to face the team of Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross in a Tag Team Country Whipping match. It wasn’t pretty, with Cole and Swaggles getting the win.

8 Triple Threat Steel Cage

Steel Cage matches are considered to be pretty common in the modern era of professional wrestling, but a triple threat encounter isn’t something you see all too often. Back in 2011, John Cena and John Morrison both challenged The Miz for the WWE Championship in this match, not long after Miz had beaten Cena at WrestleMania.

John came out on top and managed to capture the championship, which would eventually lead to his legendary feud with CM Punk later on in the summer. Oh, and in regards to the match itself, it was pretty forgettable.

7 Hog Pen

Nobody on the face of the planet wants to remember the time that ‘Santina’ Marella was a thing in WWE, but here we are. In one of the more bizarre matches in the history of the company, Santina defeated both Chavo Guerrero & Vickie Guerrero in a Hog Pen match.

It’s about as crass as it comes across from the description alone, and it serves as a pretty poor attempt at comedy from WWE, in a match that featured three really credible and important members of the main roster.

6 Extreme Makeover

Back in 2010, we hadn’t quite experienced the transition into the women’s revolution era, and we were actually still a few years away from it. As such, there were still plenty of questionable stipulations and Divas matches that we had to endure.

One such example was the Extreme Makeover match between Beth Phoenix and Michelle McCool, two of the best female wrestlers of their generation. The whole storyline didn’t really do much to flatter either woman, it was a waste of time on the actual pay-per-view, and it’s probably one of the saddest indications of where wrestling was just under a decade ago.

5 WeeLC

For fans who didn’t know what it was like to actually experience this match, we can confidently say that you were missing out. WeeLC, despite how insanely stupid it may sound, was one of the most entertaining things that WWE produced throughout the entirety of 2014.

From an offensive point of view, it may not have been well received by some people, but for the most part, El Torito’s victory over Hornswoggle was a joy to behold. It wasn’t technical and it wasn’t too serious, because, in the end, it was just incredibly fun – which is what pro wrestling is all about.

4 Kiss My A**e

Sheamus’ return and eventual heel turn in 2015 could’ve led to one of the most exciting runs of his career. Alas, while he did eventually capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship later in the year, the whole thing felt a little bit rushed for our liking.

It didn’t help that one of his first matches back was a Kiss My A**e match against Dolph Ziggler, who was actually still a pretty big fan favorite at the time. Even worse, Dolph went on to win the match, which didn’t really make a lot of sense given the dynamic between the two men at the time.

3 Russian Chain

After John Cena defeated Rusev to win the United States Championship at WrestleMania 31 in 2015, very few people could’ve imagined that it would lead to one of the best runs of Cena’s career. Sadly, while that did turn out to be the case, the Russian Chain match in question wasn’t really our cup of tea.

We can understand what WWE was trying to do with the story of the match, but it just felt like the whole premise was a generation or two too late. In the end, Cena got the win, and the Bulgarian Brute was never really able to get back to this kind of position.

2 Asylum

In delivery, the Asylum match between Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho in 2016 didn’t work at all. In theory, though, it was shaping up to be a lot of fun, and it’s just a shame that WWE decided to be a little bit too silly with the whole thing because it had potential.

The fact that Jericho and Ambrose have both jumped ship to All Elite Wrestling three years later makes it all the more intriguing, but nonetheless, the match had its merits. The use of thumbtacks was particularly interesting, given that WWE hadn’t used them for quite a few years by that point.

1 Kendo Stick on a Pole

As two of the best female competitors in WWE, Alexa Bliss and Bayley deserved better than what they got with the booking of the Kendo Stick on a Pole match – and Bayley in particular.

Bliss wound up getting the win in what was essentially a squash match, and interestingly enough, the two women will square off again (with the addition of Nikki Cross) in the 2019 edition of Extreme Rules. Hopefully, given that they’ve got a better story this time around, they’ll be given more time to produce something special instead of something forgettable.
