The term Diva may no longer be used by the WWE with the ongoing rise of women's wrestling, but it does define so many Superstars who have competed for the WWE. And while the division may not have been the focus of the company until recently, there have always been female stars who caused trouble when the cameras weren't rolling. Some of whom were simply difficult to work with in the ring, carrying a huge ego that led to several beefs within the industry.

And while it is usually male stars who are known for playing backstage politics, this list will prove that female Superstars have also done their fair share of work throughout history. In the modern WWE, there haven't been nearly as many controversial figures compared to the past. That is mostly due to the fact that the company has been working to change the culture for the better. And in many ways, they have already succeeded since the industry is no longer as plagued by backstage politics and favoritism as it once - well, with the exception of a few stars.

There have also been female stars to cause rifts between co-workers due to their involvement in various relationships with fellow Superstars. And while we always discuss wrestlers who are seen as troublemakers for obvious reasons, we cannot overlook those who have been ideal employees during their WWE careers. Today, we list 10 WWE female stars who were notorious "Divas" backstage and 10 who were saints:

20 Diva: Maryse

via wwe.com

In her second stint with the WWE, it seems like Maryse has been on her best behavior. Perhaps she matured since her younger days, or it could be The Miz's influence that has kept her out of trouble. But during her first run, she was one of the most hated Superstars behind the scenes. Maryse managed to clash with several members of the roster, all of whom would call her out for her attitude. During an interview, Michelle McCool was playing word associating and labelled Maryse as conceited - despite having had nothing but nice things to say about the other names.

Candice Michelle and Victoria also agreed that Maryse was very arrogant during her time in the WWE. She also had many issues with The Bella Twins whom reportedly worked behind the scenes to keep her out of the WWE for as long as possible. These days, Maryse seems to have changed her attitude for the better although she still doesn't have too many friends backstage. Considering her great appearance and the lack of female talents when she arrived in the WWE, Maryse was fortunate to survive all the backstage heat on her to remain with the company.

19 Saint: Ivory

via wwe.com

If you needed verification that Ivory belongs in the saint category, then it would be wise to check out her Hall of Fame induction in April. Plenty of female wrestlers showed up to the event for the sole reason of supporting their good friend Ivory, who is seen as one of the most respected Superstars of all-time. Her contributions to the wrestling world have been well-documented, serving a vital role in advancing women's wrestling at a time when it was still not taken very seriously. Ivory left the company on good terms back in 2005, and would mostly stay away from the limelight for the next few years.

In recent times, she has been brought back to the WWE for media appearances as well as Network programming.

Upon her return, she received a warm welcome from management and talents alike, especially those who knew her back in the day.

Despite belonging to an era where controversy was the norm, Ivory was one of the few names that managed to remain neutral - focusing on her career rather than backstage politics. Considering her legacy today, Ivory played the right cards with her career moves.

18 Diva: Melina

via Instagram.com

Melina was the ultimate Diva during her time in the WWE, and not in the sense of being the WWE's ultimate favorite among their female workers. It is the very reason as to why she was released from the company in 2011 when management determined that she was no longer worth the headache. She was so unwanted at the time that WWE took it one step further by also releasing her then boyfriend John Morrison to get rid of Melina's backstage presence. She had been a Diva since her first year in the WWE when she landed in trouble for reportedly having a number of affairs with WWE Superstars.

And she was dating Morrison at the time, who supposedly found out about the ongoing affairs and chose to not act on it. But the drama would never end with Melina as she always found something new to keep her in trouble - including some clashes with fellow WWE Divas. And while many of the former female wrestlers tend to remain close or at least keep in touch, Melina doesn't seem to have that kind of relationship with many figures in the industry. It's surprising that WWE tolerated her behavior for as long as they did.

17 Saint: Nia Jax

You won't find any of the current WWE Superstars badmouthing Nia Jax as she happens to be one of the most popular figures in the WWE, both among her peers and superiors. Almost every female wrestler on the roster has become friends with Nia, as evident by her appearances on everyone's social media. She is arguably the biggest sweetheart in the WWE today, as Nia tends to avoid trouble as much as possible. At some point, she was upset with the creative direction of her character although she would deal with those issues properly behind the scenes.

She hasn't clashed with any other co-worker thus far, making her a great presence in the locker room. Many current wrestlers have listed Nia as one of their best friends in the company, which goes to show just how much of a saint she is. And while some may have thought that Nia could change upon winning the Raw Women's Champion, that has yet to occur as she remains as popular as ever with her peers. And since WWE strives to maintain a drama free culture in the WWE, Nia has done a great job in contributing to the ongoing culture shift in the company.

16 Diva: Lana

If you were to ask WWE fans, Lana would probably top the majority of lists when it comes to the hottest female wrestler today. But she may elected the least popular among her peers since she has had several problems in the past - some of which were big enough for management to interfere. Lana has been known to cause controversy thanks to her outspoken personality and constantly support of her husband Rusev - she has sent out many tweets that didn't go too well with members of the WWE.

There was a time when she engaged in a Twitter beef with Paige after having had problems for several months.

She even managed to be at odds with some of the most liked members of the roster, including Renee Young and Natalya - both of whom have criticized Lana in the past.

Luckily for Lana, she has been able to keep her job for as long as she has, especially when you consider how little she has to offer inside the ring. And when you add the fact that she has clashed with so many co-workers, she may be hanging on thin ice at the moment. Although her recent inclusion in the Money in the Bank match may suggest otherwise.

15 Saint: Natalya

Natalya has a strong case as the most beloved Superstar behind the scenes. Since arriving to the WWE, she has made so many friends that we could compile an entire list. During her time on SmackDown, Natalya was said to be close with Charlotte, The Bella Twins and Carmella. Early in her career, she had a strong bond with both Beth Phoenix and Victoria - and they remain close friends to this day. More recently, Natalya switched brands with her move to Raw but that didn't stop her from making some new friends, as she has been hanging out with Sasha Banks, Ember Moon and Bayley. There's a pattern here that Natalya seems to be able to make friends with pretty much anybody.

She even managed to get close with the WWE's newest signing Ronda Rousey, which speaks volumes about Natalya's popularity. Many of her co-workers are always full of praise when it comes to Natalya, claiming that she is one of their best friends in the industry. Her involvement on Total Divas has given fans an insight about how admired Natalya happens to be. She is practically a backstage leader for the women's division as she is always trying to help everyone while also being friendly at all times.

14 Diva: AJ Lee

via pinterest.com

AJ Lee may have stolen the hearts of WWE fans but the same cannot be said about some of her peers. Many had problems with AJ behind the scenes, complaining about her aggressive attitude and childish behavior from time to time. She had developed an intense rivalry with Nikki Bella to the point where the latter refused to work with AJ under any circumstances. And while Nikki is somewhat of a diva too, that was the only time where she flat out refused to do a program with someone.

AJ also drew major heat during WWE's Tribute to the Troops show in 2013 for going off on current ESPN host Michelle Beadle. She was in a relationship with CM Punk at the time, and didn't appreciate seeing her man talk to someone else - especially after Beadle had jokingly referred to him as "f-face." Beadle claims to have been friends with Punk for many years, although AJ didn't take too kindly to her joke or approach. As you can imagine, the WWE was far from pleased with AJ's unwarranted hissy fit especially since she was clearly overreacting in this case. However, AJ being the talent she is, was certainly worth the occasional headache she caused officials.

13 Saint: Kelly Kelly

via wwe.com

Kelly Kelly was hired due to her good looks so it's no wonder that she never bothered to improve as a wrestler. Her early beginnings saw Kelly used as a stripper on weekly basis until WWE had milked that angle to the maximum.

Throughout her WWE stint, Kelly was a controversial figure due to her alleged relationships with fellow WWE Superstars.

Some of her co-workers such as Randy Orton and Maria have accused her of dating multiple coworkers at the time, and causing trouble among the talents.

But it didn't just stop there as Kelly had been engaged in multiple beefs that reportedly put an end to a possible WWE return a few years ago. In her first stint, she didn't get along with The Bella Twins at all - but the tables would turn soon as Kelly went from being the face of the division to an afterthought. Meanwhile, The Bella Twins rose to the top in her absence, and when she was ready to return to the company, it is rumored that they interfered to block the deal. In her defense, Kelly was really younger during her first WWE stint so perhaps some of her mistakes are justified.

12 Diva: Stacy Keibler

via wwe.com

Stacy Keibler was arguably the best looking female wrestler of the 2000s despite some strong competition - many of whom landed on the list. Despite her popularity, Keibler appeared to always be somewhat embarrassed by her involvement in professional wrestling although the paychecks were too good to turn down. Not only did she put no effort in improving inside the ring, but she was quite tough to please as far as creative direction. There were multiple times where WWE approached her regarding a title reign, but Keibler would always reject since she didn't want to get too involved in the ring.

She tried to be an eye candy for as long as she can, and bolted once her wrestling duties began increasing. WWE had tried different ways to get the best out of Keibler, including her brief stint with The Dudley Boyz. But she didn't exactly get along with them either, especially towards the beginning, as Keibler didn't want to be involved in some of the riskier spots. It is very unlikely that she would have made it to the WWE in today's era considering how little interest she had in doing anything but showing off her long, sizzling legs.

11 Saint: Asuka

You would be hard-pressed trying to find WWE Superstars who dislike Asuka. She may not be apart of many crews as some of the female wrestlers tend to be, but that is mostly due to the language barrier. However, it hasn't seemed to affect her ability to make friends. Asuka has made major improvements since joining the WWE, and will likely develop more friendships once she is fully comfortable with the language. But that didn't stop her from making many acquaintances such as Sasha Banks, Bayley and Becky Lynch. She is considered to be one of the best workers in the women's division for various reasons, including her willingness to make her opponents look just as good.

Since joining the WWE, there haven't been any reports regarding backstage heat with Asuka. But then again, she didn't have too many reasons to be upset with management considering that she was handed an undefeated streak from the very beginning. There was a time when the WWE locker rooms was filled with divas as everyone went in business for themselves. Thankfully, times have changed and so has the culture in WWE, allowing the likes of Asuka to succeed without being miserable due to the backstage politics.

10 Diva: Paige

via pinterest.com

Paige is considered to be one of the better women's wrestlers in recent years, but that doesn't excuse her backstage antics. In fact, she is lucky to remain employed by the WWE as the company may not have hesitated someone else in her position. But considering the movie about Paige, WWE had no choice but to try and make things work. And it's not even the naughty scandals that make Paige such a diva, but more so her backstage attitude towards some of her co-workers. It's ironic that even though her name in NXT was being the "Anti-Diva" she actually had diva like behavior at various times backstage. She hasn't always been the most pleasant person to work with, as Paige can be quite handful from time to time.

Having clashed with several women in the past such as Charlotte and Lana, Paige was even accused of attempting to play backstage politics to get an advantage over some of her rivals.

And for those who follow Total Divas, then you would know that Paige totally belongs on that show. Not only does she easily get offended and throw tantrums for the most ridiculous reasons, but she also has the tendency to gossip a bit too much.

9 Saint: Gail Kim

via pinterest.com

Gail Kim is someone who is universally loved by wrestlers and fans alike, but unfortunately for her, she couldn't gain the support of the two most important figures in the WWE. Vince McMahon has never been a huge fan and had to be convinced to give Kim an opportunity in the WWE, listing lack of physical appeal (huh?) as the reason behind his very little interest. And his daughter Stephanie never got along with Kim either, as the latter continues to criticizes her former boss for not having supported the women's division in the past.

In fact, Kim has indicated that Stephanie was working against all the hard work done by some women on the roster. With such complicated relationships with the McMahon family, Kim has become a controversial figure. But make no mistake about it: she may be very outspoken but that doesn't make her a diva. Kim was simply trying to advance the women's division at a time when the WWE wasn't prepared to indulge yet. From WWE to TNA, she remains on great terms with the majority of her past co-workers - all of whom have nothing but the highest praise towards Kim as a wrestler and person.

8 Diva: Lita

There are plenty of urban legends regarding Lita's days prior to her claim to fame, especially during her time in ECW and Mexico. Upon joining the WWE, she was initially on her best behavior until she became one of the more popular Divas on the roster. Many accused her of developing an ego that supposedly made Lita grow apart from many of her former friends. She also happened to be involved in one of the biggest scandals in WWE history when she cheated on her former boyfriend Matt Hardy with Edge.

That alone should probably earn her a spot on this list, especially the way she dealt with the situation afterwards in trying to shift the blame to Hardy. Since then, Lita seems to have lost the respect of the locker room for the most part as she didn't last much longer in the company. In her final year with the WWE, she clashed with newcomer Michelle McCool by calling her out in front of everyone for supposedly taking the best seat in the women's locker room. The story has been previously told by McCool during one of her interviews, confirming that Lita was a true diva in more ways than one.

7 Saint: Becky Lynch

via wwe.com

There aren't many members of the roster who are currently more beloved by co-workers than Becky Lynch. She has gained a reputation as a sweetheart, earning her many friends during her WWE journey - none closer than Charlotte Flair who has repeatedly referred to Becky as her best friend. And while they may be truly close to each other, Becky has also made other friends including Sasha Banks, Natalya, Carmella, Naomi and Bayley.

Based on what we know about Becky, it's easy to see why everyone seems to be drawn to her as she is genuinely one of the nicest people in the WWE.

Not only has she carried that attitude behind the scenes, but she has also been a total sweetheart towards the WWE fans as well. Becky has been one of the most important female wrestlers on the roster, although plenty of fans would argue that she deserves more success than she has had thus far. And yet Becky never caused any trouble backstage, continuing to work hard and deliver whatever is asked of her from management. That's why she is now considered as one of the leaders of the WWE women's division and one of the true sweethearts behind the scenes.

6 Diva: Nikki Bella

via wwe.com

Nikki Bella may come across as a sweetheart but that doesn't justify some her diva actions. Over the years, she has had problems with many fellow Divas - especially after she started dating John Cena. There are plenty of fans who believe that Nikki highly benefited from the relationship, receiving many opportunities that others can only dream of. And while they may not admit it, we would be willing to bet that several Superstars also share those same feelings. In the past, Nikki had problems with Maria when the former spotted her dancing with Dolph Ziggler, who was dating Nikki at the time.

She made a huge ordeal about it and held a grudge against Maria for years later - as Nikki has been accused of playing backstage politics to block Maria's return to the WWE in 2013. But the trouble didn't stop there, as she also had major problems with Maryse and Kelly Kelly. Not much is known about those beefs with the exception that Nikki talked management out of bringing back the two former WWE Divas a couple years ago. When there is fire, there is smoke - and that's why it's easy to believe that Nikki was a diva behind the scenes.

5 Saint: Trish Stratus

Historically, the better looknig the female wrestler, the more likely she is to be a diva in every sense of the word. Trish Stratus proved to be one of the exceptions for the rule, as she has always been admired by everyone from co-workers to fans and even management. She was a true professional during her time in the WWE, and went from being used solely as an eye candy to one of the best Superstars in history. Her attitude and ability to co-exist with others were the main reasons as to why Vince McMahon went with Trish over Lita as the face of the women's division.

You won't find many, if any, former Superstars with criticism towards Trish.

That goes to show how beloved she was behind the scenes, as she never changed even at the peak of her popularity. To this day, Trish maintains a great relationship with the company, and always shows support to current female wrestlers. She has been an exemplary role model for the division, and that's why the WWE tends to give her a special treatment compared to other legendary female Superstars. Trish really was everything the WWE wanted in their top female star, heck in any top star in the company.

4 Diva: Sunny

via wikimedia.org

Known as the original Diva, Sunny became one of the most controversial figures in WWE history. She had been in a relationship with fellow WWE Superstar Chris Candido, although Sunny was actually dating multiple people behind the scenes. And not only did she tend to jump from one relationship to another, but Sunny also affected the personal relationships of many wrestlers including Bret Hart. Most Superstars found Sunny to be extremely difficult to work with - causing some rift backstage until she eventually left the WWE.

And while Sunny may have had many boyfriends in the locker room, she didn't have too many true friends at the time. Due to her diva-like antics, many Superstars used to always prank her in different ways with some going a bit too far. But that just goes to show how disliked she was among her peers. There is no doubt that she is one of the best looking Divas that we have ever seen, but her wrestling career has been overlooked due to real life troubles as well as backstage attitude - which haven't improved since leaving the WWE. It seems that the term diva was taken a little too literally by the former manager and the stigma has followed her around ever since.

3 Saint: Bayley

Bayley is probably the Superstar who happens to be closest to their character in real life. One of the biggest faces in the company happens to be just as big of a sweetheart, as evident by her relationship with fellow co-workers. From Seth Rollins to Sasha Banks, Bayley has made plenty of close friends on the roster. There are some Superstars who only form friendships with those who came up with them, but Bayley has been able to get to know a number of people thus far. After having been the biggest face of the women's division, Bayley found herself lost in the shuffle and losing on weekly basis. There are plenty of female Superstars who may have caused trouble backstage due to poor booking, but Bayley has done the exact opposite.

She continues to work hard even when she isn't put in the best possible position to succeed. That's one of the many things that make her stand out compared to some of the Divas on this list. You won't find a single member of the WWE roster with a negative perspective on Bayley - and that is extremely impressive in the world of professional wrestling. That's one of the many things that make her stand out compared to some of the Divas on this list. You won't find a single member of the WWE roster with a negative perspective on Bayley - and that is extremely impressive in the world of professional wrestling.

2 Diva: Sable

via wwe.com

Sable is one of the first names that come to mind when thinking of the word Diva. She defined what it meant to be a WWE Diva for a number of years, relying on her looks and sex appeal to become one of the most over Superstars on the roster. But Sable's newfound popularity in the Attitude Era made her a Diva in more ways than one as she had developed a major ego behind the scenes.

In fact, she quit the WWE after upsetting plenty of talents on the roster by claiming that she was the biggest draw in the company.

And that's when you had the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock in their primes, so Sable certainly let the fame get to her head as she was a pain to deal with behind the scenes. Upon her second stint, it seems like she had been on a much better behavior - avoiding trouble compared to previous years. During her time in the WWE, she didn't get along with many female Superstars as she was accused of mistreating Luna - who had done her best to get to know Sable. To her credit, Sable has owned up to having a bad ego in the past.

1 Saint: Molly Holly

via wrestlenewz.com

All professional wrestlers have likely had an issue with one of their peers at some point. But if there is one Superstar who may be excluded, then it would certainly have to Molly Holly. You probably won't find a single wrestler with a bad experience or story concerning her, as she was one of the most respected and admired people behind the scenes. In many YouShoot interviews, the host always has a game for the wrestlers in which they associate a word to a Diva, or share some thoughts.

And all of them are always full of praise for Molly, claiming that she was great in every possible way. And that praise has continued on and on to the present day, with her even being mentioned in several hall of fame speeches. X-Pac went as far as to call her an angel, referring to Molly as one of the best people in the industry. And while some Superstars may have landed in trouble for asking to be released from the WWE, Molly's request in 2005 was immediately accepted by Vince McMahon - who was very supportive and indicated that the door will always be open for her. Not many Superstars have gotten such treatment from Vince over the years.
