Many people look back at the WWE Attitude Era as the best time in professional wrestling history. When watching episodes of Monday Night Raw today from that era, it was clear the wrestling matches were mostly crap, and there were more soap opera storylines than there was great in-ring action. However, those storylines were the hottest thing in wrestling at the time.

The men that sold those stories are legends in wrestling history now thanks to the feuds that defined the era. The Attitude Era helped WWE put WCW out of business, and that was all because of the moments that took place on Raw and during PPV events at that time. Here is a look at the 10 WWE feuds that defined the Attitude Era.

10 STONE COLD VS. MR. MCMAHON

It is easy to look back and say that the Attitude Era wouldn't exist without the feud between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mr. McMahon. Yes, Degeneration X was hot and they deserve a lot of credit for the rise of WWE at the time, but they were in action when WCW was winning the ratings' wars at the time.

However, when Stone Cold dropped Mr. McMahon with a Stone Cold Stunner and the war between the Rattlesnake and the owner of officially WWE began, Monday Night Raw became must-see television. No one has ever gotten the cheers that Austin did every single week on Raw during this feud.

9 STONE COLD VS. THE ROCK

There is often talk of trilogies in professional wrestling. Recently in NXT, the Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano trilogy each resulted in close to five-star matches. Go back in history, and Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat ranks as one of the best trilogies in professional wrestling history.

Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock ranks up there as well, and they have an even bigger claim. Their trilogy all took place at WrestleMania events. Stone Cold won the first two, including a heel turn in the second win. The Rock won the third, and Stone Cold retired from professional wrestling.

8 UNDERTAKER VS. KANE

While the Attitude Era had its fair share of colorful wrestlers (including a pimp and a porn star), the company left its more ridiculous creations in the past. One exception was WWE's greatest creation, The Undertaker. While he started as a gimmick, he morphed into a legend.

WWE even brought in another gimmick wrestler to fight him in his fictional brother Kane. What should have ended up as an embarrassment in wrestling history, Kane vs. Undertaker became legendary. The two men had great matches and even teamed up, and both will, one day, be in the WWE Hall of Fame.

7 EDGE & CHRISTIAN VS. THE DUDLEY BOYZ VS.  THE HARDY BOYZ

There was not a lot of great tag team wrestling in the Attitude Era. Many times, the tag titles were held by makeshift tag teams of two stand-alone stars teaming up — often bitter rivals forced to work together. There was one exception, and it was the greatest tag team feud in WWE history.

The tag teams of the Hardy Boyz, Dudley Boyz, and Edge & Christian feuded for the WWE tag team titles during the Attitude Era, and no one did it better. They were perfectly matched and introduced WWE to the idea of the TLC matches, of which they all mastered.

6 TRIPLE H VS. MICK FOLEY

When Mick Foley came to WWE, he changed his name to Mankind and had some great feuds, a few making this list. However, his final significant feud in WWE came when his body was starting to break down. As a result, Foley turned back to a previous iteration of his gimmicks and brought back Cactus Jack.

Cactus Jack feuded with Triple H, who at one time stood by Foley when he won his first world title. However, in this feud, Triple H wanted to retire Foley, and their final hardcore match saw Triple H do just that in one of WWE's most brutal matches of the Attitude Era.

5 THE ROCK VS. MANKIND

If there is one feud that shows the greatness of the Attitude Era mixed with its lunacy, it is Mankind vs. The Rock. First of all, these two had some brutal matches, including an I Quit match that saw The Rock deliver multiple unprotected chair shots to Foley's head before winning by cheating.

Then, the two had an antagonistic friendship later, which culminated with the "This Is Your Life" segment that was one of the most-watched in WWE history. These two guys tried to kill each other over and over before finally joining forces as The Rock n Sock Connection.

4 UNDERTAKER VS. MANKIND

If a person looks for one match that could define the ultra-violence of the Attitude Era in WWE, look no further than the Hell in a Cell match between Undertaker and Mankind. Paul Bearer had betrayed Undertaker and brought in Mankind to beat up his former charge. The two fought all over, with some classic Boiler Room Matches.

However, the match that made this feud truly legendary happened in Hell in a Cell. Actually, it happened on top of it when Undertaker threw Foley off the top of the cage, through an announcer's table. Undertaker then choke slammed Foley through the top of the cage, legitimately knocking him out in the process.

3 THE ROCK VS. TRIPLE H

The Rock was involved in huge feuds in WWE, but his feud with Triple H lasted longer than all of them. The Rock won his very first title from Triple H in 1997 (the IC title). The two then began to feud in their factions (DX vs. NoD). The two then started feuding for the world title in 2000.

They switched sides more than once, with both men working with and against Mr. McMahon. They fought for numerous titles, in steel cage matches and Irom Man matches, and were the faces of two separate eras in WWE history.

2 DX VS. NATION OF DOMINATION

As mentioned, The Rock and Triple H were involved in a feud ever since Dwayne Johnson debuted in WWE. Part of that feud included their former factions. The Nation of Domination was involved in faction wars before in a battle with the Disciples of Apocalypse and Los Boriquas.

However, when they feuded with Degeneration X, it blew the roof off the WWE arenas. The Rock, Farooq, D-Lo Brown, Mark Henry, and Kama Mustafa took it to Triple H, The New Age Outlaws, X-Pac, and Chyna, and it was the best faction war of the Attitude Era.

1 THE BATTLE OF THE MCMAHON FAMILY

While Stone Cold vs. Mr. McMahon was the feud that ignited WWE, the rest of the McMahon family couldn't keep their noses out of the wrestling business. Shane McMahon feuded with his father off-and-on through the Attitude Era. The two teamed in the Corporate Ministry, and then Shane bought WCW to spite his dad.

Stephanie McMahon went from daddy's little girl to someone that he allowed the Corporate Ministry to sacrifice on a cross to someone who married Triple H and turned evil again. Linda McMahon was even there to thwart Vince on occasion, and he repaid her by acting out cheating scandals. The McMahon family remained at the center of most feuds in the Attitude Era.
