The professional wrestling industry is all about pitting the superstars against one another. Like in the movies and comic books, you have the heroes and the villains.

Most of the time, the feuds you see on WWE television are nothing more than scripted performances. In reality, these wrestlers get along just fine in real life. There are no issues whatsoever.

But over the years, some of the greatest wrestlers in WWE history had real-life beef that created tension backstage. On the flip side, some wrestlers were best friends - heavily responsible for pushing the career of the other.

Here's a look at five wrestlers who were enemies in real life, and five that were best friends.

10 10. Enemies: Goldberg & Chris Jericho

Chris Jericho and Goldberg spent time together in both WWE and WCW. The former left to join Vince McMahon's promotion in 1999, and Goldberg followed wound up in WWE four years later.

Jericho revealed that his time with Goldberg in WCW "was a complete disaster," and he wasn't happy to hear that the former pro football player was joining WWE. According to Y2J, Goldberg grabbed him by the throat during a heated backstage confrontation.

Jericho managed to counter by placing Goldberg in a facelock grip, thus subduing the man who obviously had a huge side advantage. The two were eventually restrained by other superstars.

9 9. Best Friends: Kane & The Undertaker

Kane and The Undertaker were involved in one of the most storied wrestling feuds of the '90s, but in reality, these two storyline half-brothers were close like real-life brothers.

Both superstars helped elevate the other's career to new heights. They were both instrumental figures in the Attitude Era, and the Brothers of Destruction tag team emerged as one of the most iconic in WWE history.

8 8. Enemies: Matt Hardy & Edge

Matt Hardy and Lita began dating in 1999, and their real-life relationship was used in on-screen storylines as well. But in 2005, Hardy was shocked to learn that Lita had started a relationship with Edge.

A heartbroken Hardy then took to social media and let the wrestling world know about the Edge-Lita relationship. WWE then released Hardy from his contract for his actions, but he was brought back a few months later.

This love triangle was then used in storyline, where Edge and Hardy used their real-life tension and dislike of one another. In fact, Pro Wrestling Illustrated named this the Feud of the Year in 2005.

7 7. Best Friends: Kevin Nash & Scott Hall

Scott Hall and Kevin Nash left the WWE in 1996 after receiving better offers from WCW. Together, these two became known as "The Outsiders," and they were immediately pushed as main event heels.

Nash, Hall and Hulk Hogan later formed the villainous New World Order stable that changed the wrestling world forever. The trio would later reform the faction when they returned to WWE in 2002.

And while Hall struggled with many personal troubles outside of wrestling, Nash stood by his side and helped his friend overcome all the adversity. Nash and Hall remain close friends to this day, and they post numerous photos together on social media.

6 6. Enemies: Ric Flair & Bruno Sammartino

Before Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan, the late Bruno Sammartino was perhaps the biggest name and money draw in the professional wrestling business during the '70s. He was a two-time WWWF World Champion, and wrestlers learned to respect everything about Sammartino.

However, the Nature Boy and Sammartino had a difficult working relationship during the peak of their respective careers. Flair once referred to Sammartino as "a Northeast star who couldn’t draw fans outside New York."

The Nature Boy once said that Sammartino wasn't willing to shake his hand during an event. In response, Sammartino called it Flair "a liar" and said it was "a stupid statement." Finally, Sammartino said he didn't "respect" Flair.

The two superstars were able to bury the hatchet before Sammartino died last year.

5 5. Best Friends: Edge & Christian

Edge and Christian are both the same age, and they were both born in Ontario. The two superstars were billed as brothers when they joined WWE in the late '90s, and the duo formed one of the greatest tag team of all-time.

Along with The Dudley Boyz and The Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian brought a jaw-dropping hardcore wrestling style to WWE during the Attitude Era. These two won seven Tag Tag Team Championships together, and they later launched E&C's Pod of Awesomeness, though Edge stepped away from it in 2017.

Not only that, but Edge and Christian also received their own show on the WWE Network. Over 20 years after starting their WWE careers together, the two wrestling legends remain as close as ever before.

4 4. Enemies: Bret Hart & Shawn Michaels

Though Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart had one of the most iconic and entertaining wrestling feuds of all-time during the '90s, the heat between these two outside of the ring was absolutely legitimate. The two simply couldn't stand one another.

Their real-life beef took a turn for the worst at the 1997 Survivor Series pay-per-view. Michaels and Vince McMahon conspired to double-cross Hart in what became known as "the Montreal Screwjob." Michaels locked Hart in the latter's Sharpshooter submission hold. Though the latter never tapped out, Vince McMahon instructed referee Earl Hebner to call off the match, and the bell was rung to signal a victory for Michaels.

Hart wouldn't return to WWE for another 13 years, but he and Michaels finally "buried the hatchet" and have become friends. They have both been open in discussing the personal feud during their historic careers.

3 3. Best Friends: Trish Stratus & Lita

Widely regarded as the two greatest female wrestlers of all-time, Trish Stratus and Lita couldn't be any closer in real life - even though they feuded countless times on television.

Lita is the godmother of Trish's son, Maximus. The two even reunited and teamed up at last year's Evolution pay-per-view, where they defeated Alicia Fox and Mickie James in a tag team match.

Trish and Lita even made history on the Dec. 6, 2004 episode of Raw - taking part in the very first women's main event in the show's history.

2 2. Enemies: Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage

Hulk Hogan and 'Macho Man' Randy Savage were the WWE's two biggest superstars in the '80s, and they later formed the beloved "Mega Powers" tag team. The two eventually broke up and began to feud in storyline, but their real-life tension was even worse.

Hogan once claimed that he challenged Savage to a fight when they crossed paths in 2004. Savage also released a rap album called Be The Man, and it included a song where he insulted Hogan numerous times.

And though The Hulkster said he and Savage made up before the latter's passing in 2011, Bret Hart claimed that Macho Man "didn’t have much good to say about Hogan."

1 1. Best Friends: Triple H & Shawn Michaels

Triple H and Shawn Michaels go way, way back. The two were part of "The Kliq" who had high and powerful backstage roles with the company. They later formed the iconic D-Generation X stable at the height of the Attitude Era.

And while Michaels dealt with substance abuse and other personal problems in the '90s, Triple H never abandoned his long-time friend. The Game helped his friend get clean, and the two have remained as close as ever over he past two decades.

Michaels came out of retirement to reform DX with Triple H at last year's Crown Jewel pay-per-view, where they defeated Kane and The Undertaker.
