Money in the Bank has a reputation for changing the careers of WWE Superstars and with good reason. After all, winning the annual ladder match has a better track record of providing a path to world title glory than winning the Royal Rumble, King of the Ring, or most any other major WWE milestone.

Not everyone who got the briefcase cashed it in successfully, though, or at least not on his or her first try. This article takes a look back at ten cash-in attempts that wound up being particularly damaging or even embarrassing for the individual who was carrying the briefcase.

10 Braun Strowman, SummerSlam 2018

The main event of SummerSlam 2018 had a truly electric atmosphere. Fresh off of a dominant victory over Kevin Owens earlier in the night, Braun Strowman stormed the ring just as Brock Lesnar prepared to defend the Universal Championship against Roman Reigns. The Monster in the Bank declared he would challenge the winner.

Piece by piece, Strowman’s plan fell apart over the five minutes to follow. First, he got hit by an errant dive from Reigns. Then Strowman got mauled by Lesnar, with The Beast ultimately throwing the Money in the Bank briefcase from ringside, effectively neutralizing its threat. In particular, Strowman didn’t have time to recover when Reigns pinned Lesnar seconds later to close the show.

9 Alberto Del Rio, Money in the Bank 2011

Money in the Bank 2011 saw Alberto Del Rio win a Money in the Bank Ladder Match. That major career accomplishment was largely overshadowed, however, by an iconic CM Punk vs. John Cena match, for which a rabid hometown crowd in Chicago cheered Punk to victory.

The storyline went that Punk was leaving WWE, and so Mr. McMahon ushered Del Rio to ringside to cash-in his contract immediately and take the title off The Straight Edge Superstar. A game Punk kicked Del Rio in the head, though, to incapacitate him long enough for Punk to escape through the crowd with the title.

8 Carmella, SmackDown, January 2018

Carmella had one of the longest runs with a Money in the Bank briefcase, but that wasn’t entirely by the character’s design. She did have her cash-in attempts, including most notably in late January 2018.

The Riott Squad had beaten up Charlotte Flair, leaving her prone in the ring, only for Carmella to seize the moment. However, ‘Mella accidentally knocked the referee from the ring in her enthusiasm to attack The Queen. Flair had time to recover and pose a more formidable opponent that Carmella had intended to cash-in on, which sent her retreating with the briefcase in hand.

7 Daniel Bryan, SmackDown, November 2011

In late 2011, the World Heavyweight Championship belonged to the giants as Mark Henry and The Big Show waged war. The size of these monsters made a still unproven Daniel Bryan an unlikely challenger, even with the advantage of the Money in the Bank opportunity.

A November 2011 episode of SmackDown saw the oddball scenario of Big Show trying to rally a beat-up Bryan to cash-in after Show had incapacitated Henry. Bryan made a go of it, but Henry recovered enough to fend off the challenge before an official cash-in could happen.

6 Seth Rollins, Raw, June 2014

Raw's June 30, 2014 episode saw Kane take out reigning WWE Champion John Cena, only for heel authority figure Triple H to signal for Seth Rollins to cash-in right then and there. The Architect came to the ring and Cena really wasn’t game to defend himself.

Unfortunately for Rollins, his arch-rival at the time, Dean Ambrose, was also there. The Lunatic Fringe stormed the ring to beat back his former Shield running buddy.

5 Braun Strowman, Raw, August 2018

The Shield Bears Down Braun Strowman

Just one night after Brock Lesnar thwarted Braun Strowman’s ambitions of cashing in at SummerSlam, the Monster in the Bank came calling for Roman Reigns at the end of Raw. Reigns was fresh off a hard-hitting title defense against Finn Balor, and clearly at a disadvantage.

At least, Reigns was at a disadvantage until The Shield music hit.

Reigns, Dean Ambrose, and Seth Rollins had one of their most entertaining reunions here, with no build-up. Rollins and Ambrose had been partnering up at the time, so they showed up to lend a hand to The Big Dog. The three cut off the cash-in attempt and triple powerbombed Strowman through a table.

4 John Cena, Raw, 2012

The legacy of Money in the Bank is largely about giving a rising star a boost to push him all the way into full-fledged main event status with a world title win.

And so, perhaps it’s only fitting John Cena would be the first to cash-in his opportunity, only to not win the title. Cena declared his Money in the Bank intentions in advance, scheduling the cash-in a week out for a special episode of Raw. He and champion CM Punk had a good match, but things came off the rails when The Big Show interfered, causing a disqualification finish, and thus no title change.

3 Braun Strowman, Hell in a Cell 2018

After two pretty epic cash-in failures, Braun Strowman seemed to hatch a better plan for his third attempt: He scheduled his match with Roman Reigns in advance and within the confines of Hell in a Cell, theoretically keeping out any interference.

Little could Strowman have guessed that Brock Lesnar would make a surprise return to crash the match. The Beast dominated the combatants, ending the match in a draw. So it was that Strowman’s dismal run as The Monster in the Bank finally came to a close with no title win to show for it.

2 Baron Corbin, SmackDown August 2017

When Baron Corbin won a Money in the Bank contract in 2017, it made sense. He was exactly the sort of rising heel star who could benefit from the briefcase and believably come a world champion.

Corbin did cash-in on Jinder Mahal but had his plans foiled by a distraction from John Cena. Rather than this match crowning Corbin as a world champion, it instead only furthered the Cena versus Corbin issue going into their SummerSlam match.

1 Damien Sandow, Raw, October 2013

Damien Sandow was an unlikely Mr. Money in the Bank, as someone with no main event credentials or real momentum. Nonetheless, he won the contract and decided to cash-in on a sore John Cena, after the champ had gotten hurt at the hands of Alberto Del Rio at the Hell in a Cell PPV the night before.

Sandow attacked Cena and cashed in, but careful observers had their doubts as to whether Sandow would really take the title. After all, Cena was compromised, but not badly beaten. Sure enough, after taking a bit of punishment, Cena rallied and ultimately made short work of Sandow. The loss in many ways defined Sandow’s WWE run, as there was little reason for anyone to take him seriously beyond the mid-card after this fumbled attempt.
