Couples have been around in professional wrestling for decades, and we have seen many of them reach incredible heights of success. But it is not a formula that is guaranteed to work every time, especially in most recent years. There have been hundreds of pairings over the years, so fans have grown tired of seeing the same angles being recycled for WWE television. But every now and then, we still get a couple that can capture the fans' attention and draw them into the angle. In the WWE, there have been so many odd pairings that made little sense to everyone involved from Superstars to fans.

Some of these exceeded all expectations by getting over with the fans, as they managed to develop the perfect chemistry between them to make it believable. But then you have other couples who are clearly awkward around each other, which is a turn off for fans watching from home. There is nothing worse than seeing two Superstars attempting to be romantic while also appearing to be uncomfortable doing so.

There have been multiple random pairings that shockingly had the fans' support despite being placed together for the sake of booking. Other couples might make perfect sense on paper, but fail to convey any interest from the fans for various reasons that we will be going through. With today's list, we look at 8 fake WWE relationships no one believed and 7 that had us going.

16 No One Believed: Edge And Vickie Guerrero

via pinterest.com

There is no doubt that having Lita by Edge's side assisted in taking his career to the next level. She was the perfect sidekick and formed one of the top heel couples that we had ever seen. But once they split up and Lita left the WWE, Edge was once again left without a manager. And while he remained a top heel, Edge once again needed to have someone to add to his heat, which is why his on-screen relationship with Vickie Guerrero was formed.

Of course everyone immediately realized that it was simply a storyline and not a reflection of their current relationship status.

They didn't generate major heat from the fans to become truly hated, but nobody was tricked into believing that they were in fact together in real life. But it helped both of their careers, so it paid off in the end.

15 Had Us Going: Randy Orton And Stacy Keibler

via youtube.com

After Randy Orton became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in 2004, he struggled to carry the responsibility especially in his new role as a face. Orton would go on to have some tough weeks before being put in a romantic angle with Stacy Keibler. And it did work since some people were invested in the segments that involved them, which would help Orton in the long run.

Most fans didn't get the happy ending they wanted as they split up when Orton delivered an RKO to Keibler inside the ring, thus officially turning heel once again. But for the short run the couple had, they made a great fit and captured the attention of the fans. They were two of the best looking performers that WWE had so it was only natural for fans to be interested in seeing them together even if for just a short period of time. It also wasn't out of the question to wonder whether they were actually a legitimate item at the time.

14 No One Believed: Enzo Amore And Nia Jax

via youtube.com

While this angle never got to fully play out, we caught some glimpses of it earlier this year. In the midst of Enzo Amore's heel run as Cruiserweight Champion, the WWE began an angle where Nia Jax became increasingly flirty with Enzo and the seeds were fully planted for the two to be an eventual on-screen couple. Perhaps WWE was thinking they could revisit the dynamic of Santino Marella and Beth Phoenix, who were paired as an on-screen couple, with Beth being the imposing figure, alongside Santino, the comedic act. When Enzo was released from WWE, the angle was scrapped and it's probably for the best, as it's hard to think the angle would have benefited either wrestler's career.

13 No One Believed: Mark Henry And Mae Young

via thewrestlingblog.com

Last week, WWE announced that Mark Henry would be going into the 2018 Hall of Fame - a much deserved honor for a great career. If you had told fans that Henry would end up becoming a Hall of Famer back in 2000, most would not have believed you. Henry rose to fame during the Attitude Era for being apart of an angle that is still talked about today, as he was romantically involved with Mae Young on WWE television.

While the storyline provided some hilarious moments, nobody truly fell for WWE booking or even thought that they were together.

It was clearly over the top from the beginning and intended to be as cringe worthy as it turned out to be. Some thought that Henry would never recover afterwards since that angle tarnished his reputation for quite some years, although he did turn around his career as he got older.

12 Had Us Going: John Cena And Maria

via cagesideseats.com

The angle involving John Cena and Maria ran for a couple weeks and had a really slow build. It started off with Cena being interviewed backstage by Maria, which would always end up with him being flirtatious. They would eventually make out on WWE television, and Cena even saved her once from an attack - but nothing truly materialized afterwards. For one reason or another, the company decided to move on from the angle.

After having teased about a potential new couple in town, WWE went with a different direction. Cena and Maria did show some good chemistry at the time back when she was still portraying the role of a simple minded and gullible Diva. It led to rumors popping up that the two were dating, but that's nothing but fan theory.

Fans also thought that there was potential to continue growing the storyline, which is why some were disappointed to see the WWE completely drop it and never mention it again.

11 No One Believed: John Cena And AJ Lee

via wwe.com

A few years later, WWE decided to once again involve John Cena in a romantic storyline as he began approaching AJ Lee. They shared multiple kisses on screen, but that storyline was also dropped just as quickly as the last one. And although this one was a major one compared to the brief Maria angle, it didn't really connect with the fans.

Most didn't think that Cena and AJ Lee made a good couple, so fans weren't truly invested in the storyline.

They were also well aware of their real life relationship status, which affected their on-screen relationship. Unlike the previous entry, Cena didn't look very comfortable in this role, which led to some awkward moments on camera. It's probably for the best what we continue to pretend as if none of this ever happened since most fans have already forgotten about it by now.

10 Had Us Going: Christian And Trish Stratus

via youtube.com

Trish Stratus had several on-screen relationships during her time in the WWE, some ended up flopping while others were a major success. And while some angles may have been bigger and more popular, she probably had the best fit along with Christian. They would team up against Chris Jericho - who was also involved with Stratus - to become one of the most popular duos of 2004. It didn't last too long as they would go on to separate and have successful solo runs, but some fans would have preferred to continue seeing them together.

They had good chemistry backstage and inside the ring, and their relationship could have done favors for both Superstars in the long run. Christian may have even reached main event level if Stratus continued to be his partner instead of having Tomko be his sidekick. There were many couples from the Ruthless Aggression era, but Christian and Trish remain among the best.

9 No One Believed: Vince McMahon And Sable

via youtube.com

Vince McMahon has booked himself in multiple romantic angles throughout his career, and who can blame him? From Trish Stratus to Candice Michelle, McMahon was involved with some of the finest women in wrestling history. And there was also a storyline involving Sable as his mistress, which led to a family feud with Stephanie McMahon.

The storyline did bring some funny and memorable moments, so it wasn't a total waste of time, but it did go overboard which is the usual when a McMahon is involved.

And as much as Vince wanted the fans to buy into the angle, most fans didn't care enough since kayfabe was already dead by then. And when Vince is involved in a storyline then it's guaranteed to be a major one, but unlike previous years, this one didn't particularly benefit anybody. If anything, it only took air time from those who were far more deserving than Sable.

8 Had Us Going: The Rock And Trish Stratus

via allwwedivas.com

The Rock and Trish Stratus were the biggest stars of their respective divisions in their time. Eventually, as Trish's popularity continued to grow, the WWE decided to insert her into a storyline involving Vince McMahon's infamous "club". The Rock made the rescue for Trish, and the two began a semi-romantic angle. The Rock and Trish were very convincing on-screen and given how both were in such high-profile spots, it wasn't crazy of fans to think there was something more to the storyline. However, outside of the odd rumor of the two being more than friends, there was nothing more to it than work. The Rock was married to Dany Garcia at the time, while Trish was in a serious relationship with her eventual husband.

7 No One Believed: Dolph Ziggler And Lana

via pinterest.com

There are times when it's best to stick to the formula and continue doing what has been proven to work. But from time to time, WWE loves to throw some surprises along the way for the sake of curving fans. And that was the case with Lana's face turn when she associated with Dolph Ziggler to take on her former on-screen partner in Rusev.

Ziggler and Lana make a good couple on paper, but unfortunately that didn't transition into their segments as they were always awkward around each other.

And with kayfabe being non-existent today, everyone was well aware Lana and Rusev were still in a real-life relationship, with the two making little effort to hide it.

The storyline overall was confusing for some fans to follow, and only got more complicated from there. Thankfully, the storyline ended when Lana and Rusev announced their engagement and essentially ruined any form of mystery the angle had.

6 Had Us Going: CM Punk And Kelly Kelly

via fanpop.com

Fans who had high hopes for the ECW brand were left with a disappointing product that was completely different from the original company. And as the brand struggled to develop a following and gain fans' interest, there was a minor angle that seemed to catch on with casual fans. It involved CM Punk and Kelly Kelly, both of whom were still looking to establish themselves in the WWE. But Punk's popularity and charisma mixed with Kelly's looks made for an intriguing couple to say the least.

They even dated in real life for some time, but ended rather quickly just as their on-screen relationship did. And considering that the pair would end up dating because of this storyline, it's not wrong to claim that fans may have been tricked initially to believe that they were truly together. They do look like a fitting couple as evident by the photo above.

5 No One Believed: The Great Khali And Natalya

via pinterest.com

There are times when the WWE creative team runs out of ideas and begin to throw random angles out there in hopes that they work. Among them was the pairing of The Great Khali and Natalya, as they went from being friends to a couple to produce some cringe worthy moments. It was a terrible fit from the start that obviously wasn't meant to be taken very seriously, which is why they mainly served as a comedy act.

Unfortunately for Natalya, she was involved in some terrible storylines at the time as she didn't have much to do with a weak women's division.

And as for The Great Khali, he hadn't been a serious wrestler in years, so the WWE were experimenting with him by that point. The couple lasted longer than they should have as the company dragged on a bit too long with the pairing.

4 Had Us Going: Test And Stephanie McMahon

via sportskeeda.com

Most younger fans may not even be aware of this relationship. We have gotten used to seeing Stephanie McMahon with Triple H, so it may be stranger for non-Attitude Era fans to see her rolling with Test. They had been paired as an on-screen couple in 1999, and had a storyline revolving around their wedding. And when it finally took place, it was crashed by Triple H as Stephanie would turn on Test to join her new lover. Before the era of the internet, it actually looked legitimate, as many figured Test would have only gotten this storyline if he was in fact involved with the boss's daughter.

Before the angle concluded, fans had bought into the hype of Stephanie along with Test.

According to Vince Russo, the storyline was originally supposed to end with Test not going through with the wedding, which would have turned him heel. And that would have probably worked out better for his WWE career.

3 No One Believed: Carlito And Trish Stratus

via wrestlingforum.com

When Carlito moved from SmackDown to Raw in 2005, he struggled to fit on the new roster. And after spending some time feuding with Shelton Benjamin among others, WWE decided to turn him face by having him align with Trish Stratus. Not only did Carlito look out for her, but they had some romantic moments together.

Both Superstars were popular at the time, but it was just a random pairing that happened too quickly.

Trish had already been involved in too many romantic angles by then and fans weren't exactly excited to see her in yet another one. As for Carlito, he had spent the past two years behaving like the biggest jerk in WWE, so turning him into a sweetheart would end up hurting his career in the long run. They tried to make it work, and it didn't flop per se but you could sense some awkwardness between them.

2 Had Us Going: Eddie Guerrero And Chyna

via pinterest.com

When you think about memorable couples from the Attitude Era, this entry is probably among the first that come to mind. Eddie Guerrero and Chyna formed an unlikely duo that managed to succeed beyond all expectations. Both benefited from the on-screen relationship as it led increased air time, as well as some of the most memorable segments involving WWE couples. Teaming up with Chyna proved to be a good move for Guerrero's career, who had the opportunity to display his talent beyond the ring.

Fans were already aware that he was one of the best wrestlers in the world, but this relationship brought out his Latino Heat side. And as you can tell by how over they were with the fans, most were rooting for them to stay together. After bringing some great highlights, the relationship did eventually end when Guerrero was caught cheating backstage.

1 No One Believed: Kane And Lita

via wwe.com

Lita has had many romantic storylines since coming to the WWE, most of which were successful. But the creepiest of them all remains her run along with Kane from 2004 to 2005. The storyline was disturbing and far from a romantic one. But they did end up together for some time even if it wasn't exactly the ideal relationship. It was a different spin on the usual on-screen couple, and made Kane interesting for some time.

But everyone knew that Lita was dating Matt Hardy in real life at the time - prior to her affair with Edge - and even if she wasn't, it didn't exactly add up.

Out of all of Lita's on-screen partners, Kane was certainly the least believable although it didn't have to be since WWE booked it in a different way than usual. And strangely enough, it managed to work better than most had anticipated.
