The Royal Rumble winner is always one of the most heavily discussed outcomes of the wrestling year. It is an important match in the wrestling calendar and one that puts a lot of pressure on the company to get right. Confirming who will be in the main event spot for WrestleMania and clearly pushing someone as a top star makes it a crucial match.

Every fan has differing opinions, which makes it hard to please everyone. Throughout the course of the match's history, there have been many winners fans have been happy about and others fans have hated, and within this list, we will look at examples of both.

10 Loved: The Undertaker (2007)

The Deadman finally won the Royal Rumble in 2007 in what was a decision the WWE Universe was firmly on board with. The Undertaker's legendary status meant no fans were ever going to be upset about him winning the match.

This match also saw the greatest final-two moment in history. He and Shawn Michaels gave fans a preview of their classic WrestleMania matches and tore the house down with a mini-match within the Rumble. Seeing him finally get the victory, eliminating another fellow legend created a great feel-good moment within the match.

9 Rejected: Vince McMahon (1999)

This was never going to go down well, was it? Having a non-wrestler win a Royal Rumble is always going to be a poor decision, but letting it be Vince McMahon who was a top heel at the time didn't help. Granted, his feud with Stone Cold was the number one storyline at that time, that doesn't mean fans wanted this.

He was a great heel and his sneaky win got him heat, but not the kind you want. With so many big names in the 1999 Royal Rumble, anyone else would have made more sense. If WWE didn't want Austin winning that is fair enough, but at least let another wrestler get the rub of this victory.

8 Loved: Rey Mysterio (2006)

The WWE Universe loves an underdog story, and with Rey Mysterio, that is what you get every time. However, when he entered the Royal Rumble as the #1 entrant, the story was set to be an incredible one. Mysterio was attempting to win the match and head to WrestleMania to honor his late friend, Eddie Guerrero, which only added to the storyline.

With the fans emotionally invested, everyone was behind the Master of 619. His journey from being the first entrant to winning the entire match was an incredible one. It is an example of WWE giving the fans exactly what they wanted, putting road bumps along the way to really get fans invested.

7 Rejected: Alberto Del Rio (2011)

The first-ever (and only) 40-man Royal Rumble in history should have been a huge moment for a wrestler. However, the honor went to Alberto Del Rio, who was in the midst of a major push from the company. Even though as a heel, the fans weren't supposed to be happy with the result. This victory just felt very flat.

Del Rio was someone who was very talented, but never quite clicked with the audience, despite how heavily he was pushed. This particular year felt like a better time to capitalize on Dolph Ziggler, or even give CM Punk a major win to set up a WrestleMania main event. Because there were so many (40) options, Del Rio's victory just felt like the wrong one.

6 Loved: Becky Lynch (2019)

There have only been two women's Royal Rumble matches so far, and to WWE's credit, they have got the victor spot on both times. Asuka was the right call originally, and Becky Lynch was certainly the right one this year. With Lynch not originally being set for the match, fans wondered what the company would do as The Man was the most popular talent in the entire company.

In the end, they didn't make the same Daniel Bryan mistake they had in previous years. Taking Lana's place after she was injured, Lynch made the most of her opportunity. Despite having competed earlier in the night, Lynch overcame the odds and won the Rumble in what was an amazing moment.

5 Rejected: Roman Reigns (2015)

Not even an appearance from The Rock could save this disaster, as the People's Champion was heavily booed alongside Roman Reigns as the PPV drew to a close. For the second year in a row, WWE got this match badly wrong. Once again, fans wanted to see Daniel Bryan walk away as the winner, and while that didn't happen they certainly didn't want it to be Roman.

The result actually led to #CancelWWENetworking being the number one trend on Twitter, it was that bad. It was clear WWE wanted to make Reigns the face of the company, but the audience was clearly rejecting the idea. Instead of accepting it and changing plans, WWE just went deeper into it, creating a total mess.

4 Loved: Edge (2010)

Edge in the ring after winning the 2010 Royal Rumble match

Surprise returns are always key to the Royal Rumble, but when they happen with current talent and not just legends, it leads to a very unpredictable show. That's what happened in 2010 when the Rated-R Superstar came back faster than expected.

Nobody was expecting Edge to appear, so when he did come out the audience lost their minds. However, with many big names still in the ring, it wasn't obvious that he was going to win the match. WWE did a great job of making it seem like the Rated R Superstar wasn't going to walk away with the victory, but in the end, he got the job done. The fans, of course, loved every little bit of it.

3 Rejected: Triple H (2016)

Sometimes the Royal Rumble can be predictable, and that's not always a bad thing. However, in 2016 it was a horrendous decision, with Triple H not only winning the Rumble but becoming WWE Champion in the process. The Authority were feuding heavily with Roman Reigns during this time, and the plan was to completely screw him.

With Triple H coming out as #30, it was clear what was happening and the fans just rejected all of it. Nobody was interested in seeing him win the Rumble, nobody wanted him to be the main event WrestleMania with Roman, nobody wanted any of it. Yet WWE refused to listen to the audience and went along with it anyway.

2 Loved: John Cena

Who would have thought fans would have totally loved a John Cena Royal Rumble victory? However, the 2008 surprise return remains to be not only the best Rumble win but the greatest return pop of WWE's history. Nobody expected to see Cena in the match as he was supposed to be out injured for several months longer.

However, when his music hit, Madison Square Garden became unglued. The reaction of the wrestlers inside the ring made the moment just as amazing, with Triple H appearing as stunned as everyone else. From the moment he came out behind the curtain to the end, fans only wanted one winner, and it had to be Cena.

1 Rejected: Batista (2014)

As previously mentioned, the Royal Rumble can be very predictable, and in hindsight, it should have been obvious that Batista was winning this. However, the WWE Universe had built up hope that Daniel Bryan was going to walk away victorious. However, WWE opted to ignore the obvious and give the win to Batista.

A decision, that went down terribly. Fans hated the entire idea, and when Bryan didn't even appear in the match things got worse. Even Rey Mysterio was booed heavily as he appeared as the last entrant. Batista was so angry with the fans he ended up flipping off the crowd as he mocked Bryan's "YES" gesture, despite being a babyface.
