The WWE is a fast-moving enterprise; those who were at the top of the card one moment could find themselves at the bottom the next, and storylines devised by the company can often not quite come to fruition as expected.

But then sometimes storylines just end up disappearing completely, as if they weren't even there to begin with, or were unceremoniously dumped from one week to the next without anything in the way of closure for any of the wrestlers involved. These are ten situations where WWE scrapped what seemed to be long-running storylines seemingly overnight.

10 Erick Rowan's Spider

This is a very recent example of the WWE building up a storyline over months of programming and then revealing a surprise, only to completely throw the idea away within a week of the reveal. Erick Rowan had been carrying around a strange cage for months, with the contents covered by cloth. Finally, it was revealed that inside was a hairy, animatronic spider. As underwhelming of a reveal as it was (though with the set-up it seemed WWE had set themselves up for a fall), the next week Drew McIntyre destroyed the tarantula, and with it months of build-up were scrapped.

9 Vince McMahon Explodes In His Limo

This is one of the more memorable occurrences of WWE canceling a story, though on this occasion the reasoning for doing so seemed more understandable. In 2007 on an episode of WWE RAW, Vince McMahon entered his limousine at the end of the show, only to have the entire vehicle explode, seemingly with the boss inside. Plans for this angle have since been revealed, but at the time the WWE chose to bin the idea due to the ongoing situation surrounding the death of Chris Benoit, which meant Vince needed to be around the press and on WWE television.

8 King Regal

The WWE King of the Ring has often been used to push current mid-card superstars into the main event, with classic examples being King Booker and the infamous 3:16 speech that accompanied Steve Austin's win.

In 2008 William Regal won the King of the Ring tournament, with the plan being to use it to push him up the card in what many felt was a long-awaited decision. Unfortunately, Regal violated the WWE's substance abuse policy, and rather than continue the angle after his 60-day suspension, WWE chose to completely scrap their plans for King Regal.

7 Emmalina

Emmalina is another recent example of WWE pushing a story for months, only to get rid of it seemingly overnight. In October 2016 the WWE began running vignettes on RAW promising the return of Emma, but with a revision of her character in what was billed as a makeover, transforming her into Emmalina. Emma finally appeared on RAW in February 2017, but immediately scrapped the Emmalina concept by proclaiming she would instead just be transforming into Emma. This served as one of the most underwhelming reveals in company history.

6 Fake Erick Rowan

Erick Rowan finds his way onto this list again thanks to the recent WWE SmackDown angle predominantly featuring Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns. Roman had been assaulted by a mystery attacker who he believed to be Erick Rowan, on orders by Daniel Bryan. One week, a doppelganger of Erick Rowan was shown by Daniel Bryan, seemingly proving he was the attacker and that he would somehow be involved in the angle moving forward. The Fake Erick Rowan didn't appear the next week, and has not been referred to in any capacity on WWE programming again.

5 Mojo In The Mirror

In January of 2019 it seemed the WWE were intent on repackaging Mojo Rawley, as they began airing backstage segments of the star cutting promos in front of a mirror. The payoff for this angle was supposed to be when the mirror shattered, and Mojo began to wear face-paint that resembled a cracked mirror, supposedly to symbolize that he had finally "found himself".

Unfortunately for Mojo, this push was quickly scrapped, alongside the face-paint, making the entire angle pointless and yet another recent example of WWE getting rid of long-running character development and story ideas briskly.

4 Sean O'Haire

Sean O'Haire was acquired by the WWE during their takeover of WCW, as he participated in the company's invasion angle before returning to their developmental territories. The plan for O'Haire was to debut him as a devil's advocate character who would manipulate people into sins through infomercial-style vignettes. What promised to be an intriguing and fairly complex character arc for the WWE, however, only served as another example of a scrapped idea. O'Haire debuted under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Roddy Piper, but his gimmick idea was completed abandoned before it ever made it past the vignette stage.

3 Muhammad Hassan

Muhammad Hassan came into WWE with all the promise in the world. He worked a character based on an Arab American who urged prejudices against Arab Americans following 9/11 to be removed; though he was presented as a villain, the WWE handled this complex issue better than most of their similarly contentious angles in the past. Where they failedm however, was in having Hassan debut five ski-masked associates, summoned by a prayer, who attacked The Undertaker in a manner a little too close to what was perceived as a terrorist attack. This angle caused WWE to completely scrap Hassan's character, who was set to beat The Undertaker himself, and practically force the wrestler out of their company to avoid further backlash. This was a great shame for Hassan, as his in-ring and character work were impressive, but backstage storylines completely derailed his promising career.

2 Paul And Katie Lea Burchill

Sometimes WWE's storylines are quickly dropped for a good reason, like in the case of Paul and Katie Lea Burchill. Paul Burchill had previously appeared as a pirate on WWE alongside Katie Lea Burchill, his on-screen sister. The two performed in several mixed tag matches not dissimilar to many real-life WWE couples.

However, the plan was for their relationship to be a bit more than just brother and sister, at Vince McMahon's behest. Somewhat unsurprisingly, this didn't translate well at all, and the incest aspect of the angle was quickly dropped from their presentation.

1 The New Nexus

The Nexus came into the WWE as perhaps the most dominant stable ever presented by the company, infamously destroying the RAW set and taking out John Cena and CM Punk during their debut. Though they failed to win their first big match at Summerslam, the Nexus were set to be re-invigorated as The New Nexus alongside CM Punk, ditching former leader Wade Barrett. Despite how prominent the stable had been, this idea didn't last long, and as the WWE began their Summer of Punk angle with CM Punk the stable were dropped almost completely, performing in forgotten tag matches for a month before the group were gone forever from the company.
