In the late eighties, the WWE started producing The Slammy Awards. It was the WWE’s answer to...well actually it was just a network special riffing on the Academy and Grammy award shows. Some awards were serious, some just as superfluous as other award shows - they were even doled out by members of the “Academy Of Wrestling And Sciences.”

Every so often the concept comes back before it’s mothballed again. The last time the Slammys came around was in 2015. With the advent of the internet, fans voting on the outcome would be a new feature to the awards, but some of the results still made us turn sideways, like Kane whenever he’s confused. Here are 5 Slammy Award Winners That Deserved It ( & 5 That Make Us Scratch Our Heads).

10 Deserved It - 2013 Superstar Of The Year

After toiling away on the Independents for over a decade, Daniel Bryan finally came to the WWE. The Indy darling quickly became a WWE darling and the WWE Universe welcomed Bryan with open arms.

Even as the Authority kept pushing him down, the WWE was picking him back up. Despite getting screwed out of the WWE Undisputed Title again and against, the fans voted him in as the 2013 Superstar Of The Year.

9 Headscratcher - 2011 OMG Moment Of The Year

Okay, so Triple H delivered a nasty Tombstone to the Undertaker and the Deadman was still able to kick out. That’s a cool moment in a great match. It somehow won the 2011 OMG Of The Year.

That moment pales in comparison to CM Punk at Money In The Bank. The moment he won the WWE title on his “last night” in the company. You know what the real OMG Moment Of 2011 was? The fact that the Undertaker kicking out is what actually won.

8 Deserved It - 2013 Breakout Star Of The Year

They debuted at the 2012 Survivor Series and decimated Ryback. One month later, the Shield had their first match at TLC in Brooklyn. Ambrose, Rollins, and Reigns came in like a house of fire.

Three men singularly minded to be the most ferocious unit out there. They succeeded in the best way possible- all three men went on to be huge singles stars. There weren’t any other singles of set of stars worthy of winning the 2013 Breakout Star Of The Year.

7 Headscratcher - 2014 Superstar Of The Year

The fans chanted his name every night whether he was in the ring or not. The Yes Movement was overtaking the world at sporting events across the country. Daniel Bryan even defeated all three working members of Evolution in one night to create and epic WrestleMania moment.

The American Dragon was breathing fire atop the wrestling world. Yet, the fickle WWE Universe voted on Roman Reigns as their Superstar Of The Year. It’s enough to make Vince yank on his ear in complete befuddlement.

6 Deserved It - 2014 OMG Shocking Moment Of The Year

It actually might be the most deserving of any award ever. It’s the most shocking moment in all of WWE history. Don’t believe that? Just look at this guy’s face. There isn’t a WWE fan who doesn’t know what this man is bewildered by.

One of the most certain things in the life of a WWE fan was knowing that emphatically the Undertaker will walk into WrestleMania undefeated and leave WrestleMania undefeated, one more notch on the most vaunted streak in history. Until the day he didn’t. It happened so fast and the crowd went silent. No one ever expected this to happen - the most shocking moment of all time.

5 Headscratcher - 2012 Kiss Of The Year

The rib of the 2012 Kiss Of The Year category is that every nomination was AJ Lee and another superstar. As per the time though, for some reason it was John Cena getting the big award for smooching the Black Widow.

Even though that was pretty good (by WWE standards) only one kiss not only ended a title reign in record time but also helped start a movement - AJ’s planting one on Daniel Bryan right before he lost the title in 18 seconds.

4 Deserved It - 2010 Shocker Of The Year

It all went belly up pretty quickly, but that initial debut of the NXT Rookies on Monday Night Raw wasn’t just shocking, it was actually pretty jarring. It was a long time that a person or a group came to the ring and obliterated everyone and everything in their path.

It felt like a real invasion reminiscent of the nWo. The destroyed the ring and everyone around it. What happened next didn’t capitalize nearly enough on the way it could have.

3 Headscratcher - 2014 Match Of The Year

While the 2014 match of the year winner did also include the arrival of Sting and an amazing performance from eventual sole survivor, Dolph Ziggler, the match between the Evolution and The Shield from Extreme Rules or Daniel Bryan toppling the odds at WrestleMania were both far more worthy contenders for this award.

The sheer emotion alone of both of those matches far outweighed most of the hour-long Survivor Series match.

2 Deserved It - 2011 Superstar Of The Year

Five years after walking out on the company, the industry, and the fans, and CM Punk’s name continues to be chanted throughout arenas worldwide like some sort of rallying cry. 2011 was the start of a run that is still going to this very day, even if he was done running in 2014.

From his match with Randy Orton at WrestleMania to his mammoth megastar making turn in his hometown at Money In The Bank, there was no greater story in 2011 than that of CM Punk.

1 Headscratcher - 1997 Match Of The Year

There is a special place in every wrestling fans heart for the Iron Man Match at WrestleMania XII. Perhaps for its time, it deserved the coveted Match Of The Year spot. But one more match happened this year that not only still holds up, but many fans of today might not of have seen. The underrated but amazing match between Shawn Michaels and Mankind at In Your House: Mind Games.

HBK brought out the technical side of Mankind while the deranged one brought out the sadistic, hardcore side in Shawn. Before Hell In A Cell, this is the match that made Foley.
