In pro wrestling, a gimmick is everything, and finding the right one is so crucial to every wrestler’s success. Take Kane as an example. Everyone knows the Devil’s Favorite Demon and The Big Red Machine, and even Corporate Kane. However, do you remember Isaac Yankem, DDS? If you’re reading this article, you probably do. However, do you remember Mike Unabomb? Or the Christmas Creature? There is a reason why Glenn Jacobs has stuck with his gimmick as Kane ever since.

There have even been some downright silly gimmicks in the WWE. Paul Burchill insisted that his family lineage traced back to Blackbeard, so he wanted to portray a pirate on Smackdown. The bizarre Kizarny was described as “if Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts and Doink the Clown had a child.” A-Train came back from Japan and was rebranded as Tensai.

Bad gimmicks could hurt careers. Every wrestler has a dream of becoming a world champion, and something as simple as a bad gimmick given to him or her by a creative team can hinder any chance they had before even making a televised debut. Bad gimmicks can even make a company lose one of their stars, like when Cody Rhodes left because he was sick of Stardust.

However, just as a bad gimmick can ruin a superstar’s career, a good one can cement their legacy in pro wrestling. The Christmas Creature won’t be getting into the WWE Hall of Fame, but Kane certainly will. Sometimes, a wrestler just finds their gimmick that fits them. Other times, it takes a few tries. These are some of the best and worst gimmick fits in the WWE today.

20 Fits: Xavier Woods

via wwe.com

Xavier Woods is perhaps the biggest reason that The New Day ever got over as a stable. His energy and charisma are both undeniable and his in-ring persona of a nerdy/geeky gamer who loves to have fun seems to be exactly how he is in real-life. At WrestleMania 32, Xavier, Kofi, and Big E even came out in a giant box of cereal dressed as Saiyans from the Dragon Ball Z franchise, something that Xavier undoubtedly suggested to his teammates.

Combine all of this with the fact that Woods constantly plugs his YouTube gaming channel and it is clear that the persona he puts on in the ring is a perfect fit for him.

19 Doesn't Fit: Baron Corbin

via pinterest.com

Ever since he lost his Money in the Bank cash-in last year, Corbin seemed like he never really got back his momentum. For some reason, it appears that the way to get Corbin back over with the fans is to give him the role of "Constable" of Monday Night RAW.

This gimmick is just ridiculous, as it completely goes against everything that his character used to be, as, just months ago, he was still referred to "The Lone Wolf."

Even if he wasn't getting over, his character was so much more appealing as a fighter who did whatever he wanted. Constable Corbin needs a gimmick change as soon as possible.

18 Fits: Aiden English

via wwe.com

Aiden English was more over than ever as a part of the Rusev Day team, far more than he ever was as a member of The Vaudevillians. His singing/rapping before every match to hype up his partner was always one of the best parts of SmackDown Live. The "Rusev Day" chants got louder and louder.

The only possible challenge for English at this point is how he'll fare as an opponent for Rusev, and whether he can take what he got over as Rusev's mouthpiece and apply it to himself. You can't help but feel English and Rusev were split a little early, but at least English is getting some meaningful storylines.

17 Doesn't Fit: Roman Reigns

via wwe.com

Roman Reigns is fully capable of being a good main eventer and he has put on some great matches when paired with the right opponent. Where Reigns is miscast, is being the top babyface in the company and constantly playing the underdog role, even though anyone looking at Reigns doesn't see an underdog. If Reigns were built as the entitled, monster heel fans mostly see him as, then he'd be far more effective and crowds would be far more invested in Roman Reigns matches, but for the right reasons.

16 Fits: Pete Dunne

via wwe.com

Many fans thought that Pete Dunne was going to ultimately be the winner of the Inaugural United Kingdom tournament held by the WWE last year. In a fiery ending to the opening rounds, where the remaining contenders stared each other down, Dunne came face to face with William Regal and came off as a dirty fighter that wasn't afraid to take a cheap shot or two.

Even though they don't let him bite people like he used to, the WWE has allowed Dunne to keep his "Bruiserweight" nickname.

He went by that name on the independent scene, and this nickname serves his character very well.

15 Doesn't Fit: Fandango

via popculture.com

As Johnny Curtis in Season 4 of NXT, Fandango showed a lot of promise and stuck out among his fellow rookies. He would go on to win the season, even coming out above EC3, known then as Derrick Bateman. While he lost the title match that was guaranteed to him by winning his season of NXT, many felt that he could still regain some traction and make a big debut in the WWE. However, after being stuck with a ballroom dancer gimmick, Fandango was lost in the lower mid card, often jobbing.

While his career was momentarily revitalized from teaming with Tyler Breeze, Fandango doesn't seem to enjoy the Fashion Police as much as Breeze, and he should move to a gimmick that actually treats him like a threat.

14 Fits: Becky Lynch

via wwe.com

Becky Lynch was turned heel at SummerSlam, but fans have seen her more as a tweener, as Becky felt somewhat justified in attacking Charlotte Flair after she swooped in as a no. 1 contender for no reason, after Becky had been on fire for months. Either way, this new edge to Becky's character has shown how badly WWE failed to use her the past year or so on the main roster. Becky has constantly been giving some of the best promos and she's now right where she belongs, both in her status and in her gimmick.

13 Doesn't Fit: Drew McIntyre

via wwe.com

Upon his initial run in the WWE, it looked like there were big plans for Drew McIntyre. He was Vince McMahon's chosen one. He even won some gold twice, once as Intercontinental champion and once as Tag Team Champion with Cody Rhodes. On the independent circuit, he tore through opponents as Drew Galloway.

When he finally made his return, he went on a rampage in NXT. His main roster success seemed imminent.

However, he hasn't done much of anything as Dolph Ziggler's partner. If anything, he seems like Dolph's lackey. Not only does Drew McIntyre deserve better,  but the fans want more from him as well.

12 Fits: Bayley

via wwe.com

While The Hugger's main roster run has been, well, less than ideal, it is through no fault of her own. During her time in NXT, she proved that her gimmick is exactly the kind that she needs. She fits the character so well, and, at one point, fans old and young all loved Bayley. Even though her success has been hindered, that is more due to bad writing than through any fault of hers. Bayley is still loved by the younger fans, so she is still clearly able to capture that innocence that won fans over before. Despite her lack of success, she clearly fits her character.

11 Doesn't Fit: Sasha Banks

via wwe.com

Sasha Banks has mostly been a forgotten member of the women's division this year, mostly because WWE spent months and months teasing a feud between her and Bayley with no real payoff.

Anyone who watched Sasha Banks in NXT knows The Boss is a character far better suited a heel.

Banks has lost relevance over the past year and with Ronda Rousey on the roster as the division's no.1 babyface, it would have made perfect sense to make Banks the heel foil to Rousey. Hopefully this changes soon, because Sasha's gimmick seems directionless.

10 Fits: Jack Gallagher

via pinterest.com

Gentleman Jack Gallagher is easily one of the most exciting and innovative cruiserweights on the 205 Live roster. Additionally, he and Neville had one of the best Cruiserweight Championship matches at Fastlane 2017 since WWE brought back their cruiserweight division. However, after not finding success as a face, Gallagher turned heel and has found much 205 Live midcard success. He was able to change his ring attire to a full suit for a few months. His umbrella always seemed like it should have been used as a weapon. Plus, the whole "gentleman" act works a lot better with Jack as a heel than a face. Even though fans love to cheer for him, he is much better suited to this heel role.

9 Doesn't Fit: Drew Gulak

via wwe.com

Before coming to WWE, Gulak was a highly successful tag team wrestler. He wrestled for Chikara Pro Wrestling as a member of The Colony as masked wrestler Soldier Ant. He is also a two time CZW Tag Team Champion, and a former Evolve Tag Team Champion. Gulak can hold his own, but it is clear that he works best as a team member. His solo run on 205 Live has never granted him much success.

Though his dorky PowerPoint Presenter got over with the fans, WWE still have never seemed like they see him as a future Cruiserweight Champion. If the WWE ever creates Cruiserweight Tag championships, Drew would be perfect for those.

8 Fits: Bobby Lashley

via youtube.com

We're still early into Bobby Lashley's run as a heel, but it's a turn that fans have long been clamoring for, as Lashley was never a good fit to play the smiling babyface in his first WWE stint, and he was floundering in that role again when he made his WWE return this year.

Now with Lio Rush as his mouthpiece, Lashley can focus on being the dominant monster heel he was in Impact.

Given Lashley's limitations on the microphone, he's in a much better spot right now, and it was well overdue. Fans will likely be more accepting when/if Lashley earns a world title reign.

7 Doesn't Fit: Bobby Roode

via wwe.com

This is surely an entry that every hardcore wrestling fan has been waiting for. Bobby Roode is a huge babyface and people love to sing along to his "Glorious Domination" theme song. He is so marketable that the WWE couldn't help but turn him face when he was promoted to the main roster. However, he has yet to do anything of real significance since his call-up. Also, as he showed in NXT, he works so much better as an arrogant heel, not a smiley babyface.

Take away the theme song, have Bobby cut a promo saying he was sick of fans singing along, and now he becomes a top heel. Gimmick fixed.

6 Fits: Tye Dillinger

via wwe.com

In the WWE, there is a lot of chanting numbers. Every time the referee needs to count someone out of the ring or needs to count for a Last Man Standing match, the crowd chants with him. This is why Tye Dillinger's “Perfect 10” gimmick works so well. He made every number in every chant into a 10. He carried a sign to the ring with the number “10” on it. Even WWE had to capitalize on his gimmick, making him the 10th entrant in the Royal Rumble in 2017. Dillinger did his best to make sure that everyone remembers the perfect 10.

5 Doesn't Fit: Jason Jordan

via wwe.com

Jason Jordan is currently out with an injury, but that doesn't exclude him from this list. When the "Kurt Angle's Son" angle was introduced, everyone figured that it was going to be Chad Gable. That made the most sense. The storyline was ridiculous, especially when considering how much of a family man Kurt is, but Gable was the best option. When it was revealed to be Jason Jordan, no one took it seriously.

After months of trying to push Jason Jordan, he seemed set for a heel turn, and that better be where they take his character when he returns.

They already messed up by giving the story to Jason Jordan. The best they can do is turn him heel and cross their fingers.

4 Fits: Elias

via wwe.com

He is the biggest heat magnet in the WWE. He knows how to play an audience perfectly. Not only that, but he is a great heel. Once his catchphrase started to actually get over, he stopped saying it. Now that his signing is starting to get over, he gets heat by not singing. As an obnoxious singer, those are exactly the traits that the fans want. When they don't want him to sing, sing. When they want the song, don't sing. He knows exactly how to play every audience that he is put in front of every night. It is hard to imagine anyone else with Elias's gimmick.

3 Doesn't Fit: Sami Zayn

via wwe.com

As the Underdog from the Underground, fans at every arena loved Sami Zayn. Even when he partnered with Kevin Owens, they were both so unbelievably annoying yet funny, fans couldn't help but to express their feelings, whether a boo or a cheer. Now that it appears that he and Kevin Owens have went their separate ways, heel Sami just doesn't seem right. His feud with Bobby Lashley before his injury was absolutely unbearable.

Sami has the charisma and commitment to make the storyline work, but he could still do so much better if he was a face again. Turning him heel seemed right at first, and it was, but fans miss face Sami Zayn.

2 Fits: The Miz

via wwe.com

Could the top spot have been anyone else? No one in the WWE fits their gimmick better than The Miz. Even when people cheer him, he knows when to shut them down and still get boos, which is very rare from a heel.

The fact that he has been in so many WWE films actually helps to enforce his gimmick and make it all that more realistic.

Even when the WWE tried to turn him face, as he is one of the best talkers in the business, fans couldn't cheer for him. His on-screen persona of thinking that he is better than everyone is so easy to hate. The Miz should never change his gimmick. Period.

1 Doesn't Fit: Finn Bálor

via sbnation.com

As much as it hurts to admit, every WWE fan knows this to be true. Look deep inside and you know that Finn does not fit his current gimmick. Yes, the inclusion portion of his gimmick is great as "Bálor Club is for Everyone," but that still doesn't mean his gimmick fits him. In NJPW, he was the leader of one of the most dominant heel factions in pro wrestling.

The fix for Finn is simple: Make him the leader of another stable. He can be a main event talent. Every hardcore fan knows this. Make the casual fans see him as threat. Turn him heel if you have to. Smiley-guy Finn does not fit him, and he needs a gimmick change before he becomes just another midcarder.
