Wrestling is more than just a sport, it’s about creating charismatic characters and exciting storylines that will hook the audiences. Feuds are a big part of wrestling storylines and in order to have a successful story, you’ve got to have a true heel and a white-hot babyface.

Heels are the bad guys you love to hate. Whether they’re breaking the rules to win or cutting a promo to knock someone down, you can’t help but boo them.

The babyfaces are the good buys that you root for. They’re often the underdogs who have the odds stacked against them. Either they’re fighting authority figures or an opponent bigger than them. A babyface wrestler is someone you connect with and cheer them on as they go through their journey to championship gold.

With a traditional wrestling storyline, the heels get booed while the babyfaces receive cheers. However, depending on the wrestlers involved, sometimes heels get cheered over the babyfaces.

There are some wrestlers who excel at being babyfaces, while other are more suited as heels. Then there are wrestlers, who excel at any role they play. For example, for most of his wrestling career Triple H was a villain, however there were a few times where he was a good guy and gained the crowd's support.

Currently, there’s a stacked roster with stars who are stuck in a rut and could use a character change. So for today’s article, let’s take a look at 10 wrestlers who need to turn heel and 10 who need to turn babyface.

20 Turn Heel: Tye Dillinger

via wwe.com

Like many NXT stars before him, Tye Dillinger has struggled since being called up to the main roster. As a member of SmackDown, he’s had a couple of good matches with Baron Corbin for the United States Championship. However, since then Tye is rarely seen, except for backstage segments. It appeared Tye was about to enter into a feud with Randy Orton after The Viper attacked him during a recent episode of SmackDown, yet nothing came of it. Tye is a wrestler who needs a huge change and having Orton corrupt him and make Dillinger a bad guy would be a good way to get attention for the former NXT star.

19 Turn Face: Shinsuke Nakamura

via twitter.com

Indie star Shinsuke Nakamura made a huge impact when he joined WWE. In NXT, he became the top champion and a fan favorite. After winning the Royal Rumble earlier this year, Nakamura would go on to face WWE Champion AJ Styles at WrestleMania 34, which was considered a dream match by many fans. After losing the match, Nakamura attacked Styles and turned heel. Since then Nakamura has won the United States Championship and become one of the top heels on SmackDown.

While some fans are applauding this new character change for Nakamura, others are critical due to the cowardly actions of his heel character.

With his heel persona receiving mixed reactions, (and his feud with Styles being over) it could be time for him to switch back to babyface.

18 Turn Heel: Natalya

via wwe.com

Coming from a legendary wrestling family, Natalya knows the business very well. She’s a wrestler who can flourish no matter what material is given to her. She’s played both a babyface and a heel. Currently, she’s a babyface and is in an important storyline on RAW as she’s teaming with women’s champion Ronda Rousey. Natalya was a mentor to Ronda as she made the transition from UFC to wrestling. Their friendship seems solid, yet as wrestling fans know that doesn’t last. So it could be only a matter of time before Natalya turns her back on Ronda. Given that Natalya’s best work as a heel, a feud with Ronda would generate a lot of buzz for the women’s division.

17 Turn Face: Mickie James

via wwe.com

Mickie James is a wrestler who can perform any role given to her. Longime WWE fans remember she played a psycho fan in her debut, where she feuded with Trish Stratus. Mickie would then make the transition to a babyface and became one of the popular women’s wrestlers during the Divas Era. After a seven-year hiatus James returned to WWE and formed a partnership with the heelish Alexa Bliss.

Mickie’s alliance with Alexa has gained her a new legion of fans. While Mickie is doing great as a heel enforcer for Alexa, it would be nice to see her return to her babyface roots and have one last championship run.

16 Turn Heel: The Usos

via wwe.com

There’s no denying that The Usos are one of WWE’s most popular tag teams. With their high-flying moves and charisma, Jimmy and Jey Uso have set the tag team division on fire. They’ve already won the tag titles five times and will have a few more championship reigns in their future.

Throughout their career, The Usos have been babyfaces, although their best work has often come as heels.

Their most recent heel turn came in September 2016 when they feuded with Jason Jordan and Chad Gable. Currently, the Usos are a babyface team, although after their recent match with SmackDown’s top babyfaces Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles, fans are speculating on whether this will lead to The Usos turning heel again.

15 Turn Face: Liv Morgan

via twitter.com

Together with Ruby Riott and Sarah Logan, Liv Morgan is shining as a heel. Since making their main roster debut in November 2017, the trio has proven to be a solid presence on SmackDown and RAW. Like the other Riott Squad members, Liv has the looks, personality, and athleticism to make it as a top star in the women’s division. After a recent injury in a match, Liv gained a lot of fan support for her ability to continue working the match.

Like many wrestling factions, The Riott Squad is eventually going to break up and having Liv turn babyface to feud with Ruby would be an exciting storyline to get both women over with the crowd.

14 Turn Heel: Nia Jax

via si.com

Nia Jax has shown herself to be one of the most dominant forces in the women’s division. The star is shining on RAW, where she’s been known to easily squash her opponents. Throughout the most of her career, Nia was a heel. Earlier, this year Nia changed to a babyface during her Wrestlemania feud with former best friend Alexa Bliss. Nia showed her emotional side as Alexa mocked Jax for her weight.

The feud with Alexa gained a lot of fan support for Nia, however since losing the championship, Nia Jax has been stuck in a rut. But it appears that she may be going back to her heel roots as WWE is foreshadowing a feud with her and Ember Moon.

13 Turn Face: Sami Zayn

via wwe.com

During his time in NXT, Sami Zayn was a top babyface. His charming looks and lovable personality made him a hit with fans. When Sami was called up to the main roster he continued to be a babyface, before his character switched to a heel when he formed an alliance with his best friend/enemy Kevin Owens. The two had a vicious feud with Shane McMahon, which resulted in them losing their match at WrestleMania 34 and being drafted to RAW.

Sami continued to flourish as a heel, but a shoulder injury put him out of action.

When Zayn returns, not only will he be strong than ever, but we could see a change with his character.

12 Turn Heel: Asuka

via wwe.com

Asuka is a star who has regressed since being called up to the main roster. In NXT, the former Women’s champion was a huge babyface and had an undefeated streak that stretched for over 500 days. An injury would cause Asuka to relinquish the NXT title and shortly afterwards, she made her main roster debut. It appeared that Asuka’s success would continue on the main roster when she won the first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble. However, at WrestleMania 34, her streak came to an end when Charlotte pinned her to retain the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Since the loss, Asuka has been stuck in a rut. But with WrestleMania season coming up, a heel turn could be the thing to turn Asuka into a main event star again.

11 Turn Face: Drew McIntyre

via wwe.com

Since returning to WWE, Drew McIntyre has been nothing short of amazing. His first WWE run was considered a dud, but this time he’s being booked like a star. After a brief stint in NXT, Drew made his main roster debut on RAW, where he formed an alliance with Dolph Ziggler. The heelish duo has been one of the biggest draws on the red brand. However, their partnership may not be going on for much longer. The rumored plan is for Drew to turn on Dolph and make Drew their new top guy. Based on the reactions, the crowd loves McIntyre and if given the right booking, he could become one of the biggest babyfaces in WWE.

10 Turn Heel: Bobby Roode

via wwe.com

If there’s one star who is desperately in need of a heel turn, it’s Bobby Roode. The former NXT champion flourished as a heel during his early days with the WWE, but by the end of his run he had become a babyface. He remained a babyface when he made his debut on Smackdown. Despite winning the United States Championship, Roode’s main roster run was seen as a dud.

Fans thought that when he was drafted to RAW that everything would be better for Bobby, but once again lack of creative booking hurt Roode.

Currently, Roode is teaming with Chad Gable, and the duo is mainly considered jobbers at this point in their careers. If Bobby wants to reinvent his image, a heel turn could be just the trick.

9 Turn Face: Sonya Deville

via wwe.com

Former Tough Enough contestant Sonya Deville’s mixed martial arts background made WWE take notice and sign her. After spending two years in NXT, Sonya along with Mandy Rose made their main roster debut in November 2017 when they joined Paige to form the heel group Absolution. However, after Paige retired due to injury, Sonya and Mandy continued their heel partnership. The duo hasn’t been seen much on Smackdown, where their former teammate Paige is the GM. Both Sonya and Mandy have huge star potential and many feel that a split between the two would do some good. Mandy is perfect as a vixen and as for Sonya, since she’s well-loved by the WWE Universe, she’d make a good babyface character.

8 Turn Heel: AJ Styles

via ibtimes.co.uk

AJ Styles is a phenomenal wrestler, so it’s no surprise that he calls himself The Face That Runs The Place. As the WWE Champion, Styles has had some big feuds this year. He and Shinsuke Nakamura battled at WrestleMania, then a few months ago he fought a heated and personal battle with Samoa Joe. While fans continue to cheer AJ, others have criticized his work. Despite being hailed as a dream match, his feud with Shinsuke Nakamura was panned by fans and critics. Many people feel that AJ’s run as a babyface has become stagnant and he works better as a heel. With AJ set to feud with top SmackDown babyface Daniel Bryan, it’s obvious AJ would be the better bad guy in this battle.

7 Turn Face: Becky Lynch

via wwe.com

Becky Lynch is currently engaged in fiery feud with former best friend Charlotte over the SmackDown Women’s Championship. In their feud, Becky is the heel and Charlotte is the babyface, yet the WWE Universe sees it the other way.

Since her main roster debut, Becky has been a babyface and is considered by many to be the most underappreciated member of The Four Horsewomen.

When she turned heel against Charlotte at SummerSlam, fans were stunned, but quickly cheered as Becky attacked Charlotte.

Becky is excelling in her heel role, much like she did during her NXT days. Yet, there are fans who want to see Becky return to her babyface ways, while retaining her edgier persona. After her feud with Charlotte, could Becky go back to being SmackDown’s no.1 female babyface?

6 Turn Heel: Charlotte Flair

via wwe.com

As the daughter of the legendary Ric Flair, Charlotte can play any role just like her famous father. On RAW, she performed as a heel during her rivalry with Sasha Banks and Bayley. When she moved to Smackdown, Charlotte changed to a babyface. However, Charlotte’s stance as a fan favorite turned when she was added to the SummerSlam match. The match was originally supposed to be Becky Lynch versus Carmella, and fans thought it was unfair for Charlotte to be added after returning from a two-month hiatus. Fans turned on Charlotte after she won the women’s championship. Even though she’s supposed to be the sympathetic babyface, Charlotte is seen as a heel, a role she’s better suited for.

5 Turn Face: Kevin Owens

www.cagesideseats.com

If there’s anybody who is one of the best heels in WWE, it’s Kevin Owens. Whether he’s on NXT, Smackdown, or RAW; Owens entertains audiences with his vicious misdeeds. Despite being a villain, Owens is a fan favorite with the WWE Universe. With his promo abilities and wrestling skills, he’s one of the top draws in WWE. His top feuds in his career have included Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, and Shane McMahon. His most recent rivalry was against good guy Bobby Lashley. However, during a match there was a turn with Lashley turning heel and Owens (seemingly) turning babyface. Owens is currently out with a knee injury, but when he comes back the star is expected to continue his babyface turn.

4 Turn Heel: Sasha Banks

via wwe.com

No female superstar is more popular than Sasha Banks. With the moniker of The Boss, Banks commands attention every time her music hits. Not only is she a tremendous wrestler, but she also has a fun personality that connects with the audience.

During her NXT days, Sasha was mostly a heel, but when she debuted on RAW as part of the Women’s Revolution, she quickly became a babyface.

The star gained a new legion of fans as she battled for the RAW Women’s Championship in history making matches. But recently Sasha has been pushed out of the championship picture in order to form a tag team with her friend Bayley, which could be the catalyst for her rumored heel turn.

3 Turn Face: Alexa Bliss

via wwe.com

Ever since her NXT days, Alexa Bliss has portrayed a heel. When she made her main roster debut in the summer of 2016, Alexa continued her reign of being a villainess. While her wrestling ability has come under criticism, Bliss has gained praise for her promos. The five-time women’s champion has competed in historical matches and went up against tough opponents such as Ronda Rousey. Since losing her recent championship match, Alexa Bliss has been pushed out of the title picture. With her no longer being a contender in the championship scene, what will be Alexa’s next move?

Well, even though she’s great as a heel, a babyface run would give Alexa a chance to experiment with something new.

2 Turn Heel: Ronda Rousey

via wwe.com

This isn't a move that has to happen immediately, but it's something the WWE could likely do after WrestleMania. Ronda Rousey has run roughshod over the women's division in what feels like a very old-school approach, in that a babyface is conquering challenger after challenger. However, at a certain point, Ronda will have to show a way to really elevate her game as a heel. Ronda has always worked better when she's able to thrive as a villain and she could easily be booked as an unstoppable heel when her babyface momentum runs its course, particularly if her Four Horsewomen group joins her on the main roster. .

1 Turn/Return Face: Bray Wyatt

via wwe.com

Bray Wyatt has always been seen as a villain. As the leader of The Wyatt Family, Bray was known to cut haunting promos and use majestic trickery to get inside his opponent’s head. When he was drafted to the RAW roster Bray had a feud with Matt Hardy. However, before long the two men would team up and win the RAW tag team championships, making Bray a babyface. Despite their success, the pairing came to an end when Hardy announced his retirement and Bray was written off television.

With Bray rumored to be returning soon and promising a character change, it would be refreshing to see his character continue to be a babyface, perhaps by coming back to help former Wyatt member Braun Strowman.
