Summerslam is quickly approaching with WWE putting together a card for their second biggest event of the year. The event will be the first official PPV under the new regimes of Paul Heyman running Raw and Eric Bischoff running Smackdown. A handful of matches have either been announced or teased in recent weeks. Others are just rumored due to the nature of wrestling secrets getting leaked into the public.

We will look at both the fan element and the WWE element of matches potentially coming at Summerslam. There have been a few matches discussed by wrestling fans hoping to see them play out on the second biggest WWE show all year. Unfortunately, those won’t happen due to the real alternatives either confirmed or getting close to confirmation. Find out just how things will unfold with five matches we want at Summerslam along with five that we will actually get.

10 Want: Seth Rollins vs Daniel Bryan

Many wrestling fans started to hold out hope for the potential of Seth Rollins vs Daniel Bryan for the Universal Championship at Summerslam after Bryan and Rowan lost the Smackdown Tag Team Championship at Extreme Rules. Unfortunately, Rollins would also lose his Universal Championship to Brock Lesnar hours later.

The potential of Rollins and Bryan having a main event feud could have cemented Rollins’ title reign. Bryan and Rollins have shown great chemistry throughout the years. A bout between two of the best wrestlers in the world for the Universal Championship would have been great.

9 Will get: Brock Lesnar vs Seth Rollins

The reality has set in that Brock Lesnar vs Seth Rollins will have their third official match of the year at Summerslam. Lesnar cashing in his Money in the Bank title shot and Rollins winning a battle royal to earn a rematch set the stage for the likely main event.

Fans hoped Brock would step away from the title picture for a while but that dream ended at Money in the Bank. The WrestleMania 35 match between the two was nothing special and it remains unlikely we’ll see a classic involving Lesnar any time soon.

8 Want: Ali vs Finn Balor

There have been rumors of Ali having an Intercontinental Championship title shot at Summerslam over the past few months. The reign of Finn Balor started at WrestleMania 35 and did not get much momentum in the overall picture of WWE.

Balor and Ali could have seen both wrestlers benefit from having such a spotlight for the title. They also have similar characters and wrestling styles that could have created the ideal match of sportsmanship. The match appears to be off the table after Balor lost the IC Title to Shinsuke Nakamura at Extreme Rules.

7 Will get: Finn Balor vs Bray Wyatt

The direction of Finn Balor was a surprising one on the Raw after Extreme Rules. Bray Wyatt made his return after months of the Firefly Fun House vignettes. Balor was the target of Wyatt as he wore the wacky mask from the vignettes and delivered a Sister Abigail finisher.

The likelihood of this match is not one that provides much excitement to fans even with Bray’s interesting new gimmick. Balor and Wyatt had a long feud two years ago that culminated at Summerslam. This pairing having another Summerslam match is disappointing for fans of both wrestlers.

6 Want: Sasha Banks vs Becky Lynch

Sasha Banks’ time away from WWE has seen fans miss her more than ever. The decision to request her release after WrestleMania 35 continues to be a story as Banks has not been on WWE television since them. Some rumors about her return had fans dreaming of her facing Becky Lynch at Summerslam.

The anger towards WWE comes from Banks feeling like she’s not being used right. A feud with the biggest star in the women’s division on a major show like Summerslam would be the perfect way to bring her back. The dream of the match already ended on the Raw after Extreme Rules.

5 Will get: Becky Lynch vs Natalya

The Raw Women’s Championship reign of Becky Lynch has struggled due to the lackluster feud with Lacey Evans running way too long. Unfortunately, that is likely to continue with her Summerslam match taking place against Natalya.

Fans reacted negatively to a disappointing fatal four-way match for the #1 contender slot with Natalya winning. A promo between Lynch and Natalya added some spark to the feud, but it’s hard to get invested in yet another Natalya title shot given her lackluster track record in these situations.

4 Want: Kevin Owens vs Drew McIntyre

Kevin Owens has become arguably the hottest star in WWE after turning face out of the blue. The face turn coincided with him destroying Dolph Ziggler and Shane McMahon in promos that mixed both storyline and reality elements in them.

Owens is now the top enemy of Shane after hitting him with the Stunner and running him down verbally over the past few weeks. The best bet for the fans would be Drew McIntyre representing Shane in the match against Owens at Summerslam. It would be a fresh match with both talented wrestlers having a chance to steal the show together.

3 Will get: Kevin Owens vs Shane McMahon

Fans will sadly have to settle for another Shane McMahon match on a major show. Shane has become one of the worst aspects of WWE television with his long promos and disappointing matches hurting the overall landscape of the program.

Kevin Owens has shown chemistry with Shane as they had an impressive match inside of the Hell in a Cell cage structure two years ago. The positive is that Owens could end Shane’s run in front of a hot crowd in his home country, but it’s hard to see Shane carrying his weight for a fun match.

2 Want: Kofi Kingston vs Roman Reigns

The WWE Championship run of Kofi Kingston has been impressive with clean victories over respected opponents like Kevin Owens, Samoa Joe and others. However, he is lacking a statement win over an elite name in the WWE world.

Roman Reigns is currently without an obvious opponent for Summerslam and this could have been the perfect pairing. Kingston facing a name like Reigns would see the crowd excitingly split between the two heroic characters. A win for Kofi would take his title reign to another level and make him a main event star even after the title run ends.

1 Will get: Kofi Kingston vs Randy Orton

Randy Orton appears to be the next opponent for Kofi Kingston at Summerslam for the WWE Championship. The Smackdown after Extreme Rules featured Orton hitting the RKO and scoring a pin on Kingston in a six-man tag match.

There could be a fun story in play here given Orton played a role in Kingston’s rise ending a decade ago. The match seems like a good one on paper, but it does not stand out as an attraction for the second biggest show of the year. Orton just doesn’t provide the same level of star power like Roman Reigns to make this title match must-see.
