Money In The Bank has become one of WWE’s premier events of the year, and they went all-in when choosing 2019’s winner — Brock Lesnar. The Beast Incarnate arrived at the tail end of the match, despite not being part of it, and took his briefcase, and now, he can cash in for a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship or Universal Championship whenever he desires.
While he’s certainly a big name that will bring some much-needed legitimacy to the briefcase, we can’t help but feel a little tired of seeing this particular superstar in a position of prominence again. Sure, we got that great “boom box” moment on Raw the night after he won, but the thought of another year of a part-time champion holding a top title just makes us a little nervous. That’s especially true when you consider the fact that the WWE roster is packed with Superstars who could make a name for themselves with the briefcase. So, we listed 10 WWE Superstars we’d rather see hold the Money in The Bank contract.
10 Ali
If we’re to believe rumors, Ali was seriously considered to win the ladder match, and it’s not hard to see why. The talented high-flyer clearly has support from head office, and fans alike. His entrance is enticing to kids, and adults can appreciate his ring work. He’s also not that bad on the microphone either.
It seems like he’s always on the cusp of taking the next big step of his career, and something gets in the way. Earlier this year, it was an injury that caused WWE to change plans and push Kofi Kingston in the World Heavyweight title scene, and now, it looks like Brock Lesnar got in the way of his second shot. Hopefully, we won’t see a third strike on this Superstar.
9 Finn Balor
Another notable name in the Money In The Bank ladder match, Finn Balor is one of Triple H’s favorites from NXT. It was clear as soon as he arrived in WWE developmental that the company had plans for him, quickly winning the show’s championship and holding it for 292 days — the longest in NXT history.
Then, upon his call-up to Raw, he won the Universal Title almost instantly in a fantastic match against Seth Rollins. Yet, during the match, he suffered an injury. Since then, he’s had some issues gaining momentum, and while he’s snatched the Intercontinental Championship, we’d love to see him reclaim the title he never lost. We can’t think of a better way for him to kick off his second Universal Title reign than cashing in on the man he beat to win the strap the first time around — Seth Rollins.
8 Cesaro
With his tag-team partner Sheamus injured, Cesaro is a singles act yet again, and a great way to get him over as a legitimate threat would be winning the Money In The Bank ladder match. We all know Cesaro is one of the most talented wrestlers they have in-ring, but he’s never been able to convey a character that Vince McMahon wants to invest in.
Yet with his physique, strength, and skill, it’s hard to bet against him. Add a dash of cunning by winning a World Title match contract, and he could be a legitimate main-eventer for the remainder of his career.
7 Andrade
In many ways, it felt like this Money in the Bank was Andrade’s to lose. The Hispanic superstar has been proving his worth on the main roster following a stellar run as the NXT champion the prior year.
His matches with Rey Mysterio show he hasn’t lost a step, proving WWE just needs to deploy him properly to make him a mega-star. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case this time around, but it’s only a matter of time before we get that with this Superstar.
6 Drew McIntyre
Drew McIntyre has it all, he’s massive, he can talk, and he is mean in the ring. Clearly, WWE has plans with him, and have kept him in a great position, but he needs to get a shot at the title soon.
A Money In The Bank win could make his first title win look a little weak, but at this point, we’re willing to accept whatever it takes to put the championship on the Scottish Superstar. Plus, his size and recent demeanor would make him the perfect antagonist to put up against Kofi Kingston on SmackDown Live.
5 Elias
OK, hear us out. Yes, Elias isn’t Ricky Steamboat in the ring, but he can talk people into a building, a rare gift for Superstars in this era. We can only imagine what he’d act like if he won the Money in the Bank on top of it all.
Elias is a star, no doubt, and he looks good in defeat, but eventually, he’s got to get a reward for the fantastic work he’s done over the last year.
4 Shane McMahon
Shane McMahon has been a fantastic heel. He’s been so unlikable since beating Dolph Ziggler in the “Best In The World” tournament at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia. So, we know he has no problem inserting himself into matches he wasn’t booked to compete in.
Following that, he’s tormented The Miz (after a brief run as Tag-Team Champions), and his stock as a bad guy has only risen since then. He’d be unbearable with that briefcase, and really, that’s what we need with the winner.
3 Bray Wyatt
Bray Wyatt is a scary clown now, and he’s going to have to make an impact when he finally shows up on WWE TV. With that in mind, we think winning the Money In The Bank briefcase would have been the perfect way to wipe the slate clean and prove WWE is willing to invest in this superstar now.
With a new look and gimmick, he’d need a little bit of legitimacy, and an any-time shot at a World title would have been the perfect way to establish the new Bray Wyatt.
2 AJ Styles
AJ Styles has done almost everything he possibly can do in WWE. While he still hasn’t won that Royal Rumble match yet, he also hasn’t won a Money In The Bank Ladder match. Sure, he had a match with Seth Rollins earlier in the night, but considering how things played out with the open spot in the match, a surprise Styles appearance near the end to win the championship as Brock Lesnar did would have been the perfect followup to his loss earlier in the night.
Not only that, but it could cause some confusion at the end of the night, making fans unsure if they should cheer their old hero who would have just proven he’ll do anything to get gold around his waist.
1 Roman Reigns
Let’s be honest, the only person fans would dislike more than Lesnar as a Money In The Bank contract holder would be Roman Reigns. With that in mind, he’d at least be there every week. Him holding the contract would also cast a stormcloud over Kofi Kingston’s title reign, making fans uneasy any time the New Day member competes.
But storyline aside, Reigns has proven he can handle the pressure of being the top guy in the company, and since his return, WWE has shown restraint in keeping him away from the title picture. We actually miss him in that position.
