2017 is quickly drawing to a close, and it’s allowed the WWE, its fans and prognosticators to reflect on the best of this year. Last week, WWE.com published their list of the Top 25 Matches of 2017. On Thursday, they followed it up with a list of the “10 Superstars who defined 2017.”
To the surprise of very few, AJ Styles claimed the top spot – and rightfully so. The Phenomenal One captured the WWE Championship, defeated Shane McMahon at WrestleMania 33 and put on epic matches against John Cena and Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble and Survivor Series, respectively.
Rounding out the list was No. 2 Braun Strowman, No. 3 Alexa Bliss, No. 4 The Usos & The New Day, No. 5 Jinder Mahal, No. 6 The Miz, No. 7 Kevin Owens, No. 8 The Shield, No. 9 Brock Lesnar, and No. 10 Enzo Amore.
Though it’s hard to disagree with many entries on the list, Mahal and Amore’s entries are definitely questionable. Though the former did enjoy a 170-day reign as WWE Champion, he didn’t have many defining moments in 2017, and was widely used as a mid-card wrestler for much of the year. Fans and pundits also criticized Mahal’s controversial title reign.
As for Amore, he and Big Cass didn’t experience much success as a tag team. Following their break-up, Amore was constantly attacked by his former friend, and relied on The Big Show to stand up to Cass.
Amore is the Cruiserweight Champion, but he’s yet to face top competition all year and hasn’t headlined any major shows. He didn’t start receiving a push until Cass suffered a legitimate torn ACL injury, which will sideline him for a few more months.
Other stars like Randy Orton, Shinsuke Nakamura and Samoa Joe were among the notable omissions on the list. Then again, Nakamura hasn’t exactly gotten the main event push that’s long overdo.
With all due respect to the WWE, many of us will disagree with some entries on the list. Wasn’t it also kind of odd to put The Usos and New Day on one listing?
