On last week’s episode of SmackDown Live, Dolph Ziggler angrily left the ring and relinquished his United States Championship. General manager Daniel Bryan came out on Tuesday and announced that a tournament for the vacated title would take place.
Zack Ryder will face Mojo Rawley, and the winner will face Roode in the semi-finals. Xavier Woods will take on Aiden English, and the victor of that match will face Mahal on the other side of the bracket.
Ziggler won the United States title for the second time after winning a Triple Threat match vs. Roode and Corbin at the Clash of Champions pay-per-view last week. But Ziggler complained to the fans that they did not deserve him, then walked out unexpectedly.
But PWInsider reported last week that Ziggler is still working live events, and that his relinquishing of the championship was probably just part of the angle. That could set up a surprise and unexpected return from Ziggler in the near future.
Fans had reason to believe that Ziggler was possibly leaving the company for good. He’s talked about his frustration, and admitted that he was about to depart from the WWE before they convinced him to sign a new contract. But it’s highly unlikely that he’s planning to leave in the nearby future.
It’s anybody’s guess when he’s going to returned to televised programs. But considering the WWE will be spending the next several weeks towards crowning a new United States Champion, Ziggler’s return may not happen until the Royal Rumble, or perhaps longer.
