The overlap of wrestlers to work for WWE and WCW featured most performers of the ‘90s  at some point. Wrestlers loved the scenario of two major promotions having mainstream platforms and the money to offer huge contracts. Only a few wrestlers like Sting, Shawn Michaels, and The Undertaker stayed loyal to one promotion.

However, there were some talents who just couldn’t get over the hump in either company. WWE and WCW both utilized the wrestlers in question to make their opponents look strong. Any of the “jobbers” with hopes of breaking out would see their runs end the same way.

10 The Sandman

Sandman

ECW presented The Sandman as a top star since he was a main eventer and world champion for most of the run there. However, fans to discover him in WWE and WCW would not see the same magic as he was used in a secondary role.

WCW tried to push Sandman as Hak in a hardcore feud with Raven and Bam Bam Bigelow, but he was clearly used to put over others. The move to WWE came in the ECW launch in 2006 and it was a poor fit. WWE moved Sandman to Raw and primarily made him a jobber to put over bigger stars.

9 Shawn Stasiak

Shawn Stasiak and Terri Runnels

The second-generation background of Shawn Stasiak saw him having high hopes from WWE when signing him. Stasiak played Meat in his first run with Terri Runnels at his side. Fans never took to him and he moved to WCW.

The run in WCW allowed Stasiak to reinvent himself as part of the Natural Born Thrillers faction. Stasiak eventually worked as a singles star, but he was tasked with putting over his opponents. WWE bringing him back officially made him a jobber in the long run.

8 Terry Taylor

Red Rooster in WWE

Journeyman wrestler Terry Taylor went back and forth between WWE and WCW a few times when trying to find a sustained push. Taylor had his most memorable run in WWE playing the ridiculous Red Rooster gimmick that flopped and made him a jobber.

WCW tried to use Taylor in a mid-card role during his various stints and once again fell into the enhancement talent spot. Taylor was viewed as a good worker, so promotions trusted him to make his opponents look strong. WCW eventually placed Taylor into a backstage role as a producer where he found more success.

7 Vito

Vito

WCW hired Vito towards the end of the run when Vince Russo was trying to push new stars. The tag team of Vito and Johnny the Bull hoped to become a fixture in WCW, but they eventually moved down into a lower card act.

Vito joined WWE a few years later as part of the Smackdown brand in the mid-2000s. The gimmick saw him wearing a dress with a small push going nowhere. WWE made Vito a jobber as well until the end of his run came without a positive impact.

6 Paul Roma

Paul Roma

The look of Paul Roma made him an ideal target for both WWE and WCW to sign in the early ‘90s. Roma received opportunities in both promotions, but he was never able to make the most of either stint. WWE found success with him in tag team action before having him fade into obscurity.

Roma received an even bigger push in WCW when he joined the Four Horsemen. Both Ric Flair and Arn Anderson were unhappy with his presence in the group and he was eventually removed. Roma was made into a lower card act until his time in the company ended.

5 Bill DeMott

Bill DeMott in WWE

WCW employed Bill DeMott for a few years as Hugh Morris. The big man had the agility to deliver a few moves off the top rope, but that wasn’t enough to get him over. Morris typically put over others and was the first wrestler to lose to Goldberg in the latter’s debut.

WWE added DeMott to the roster after purchasing WCW and utilized him as a jobber in the early 2000s, often on Velocity. Hee would put over wrestlers whenever having a match on Smackdown.

4 Tony Mamaluke

Tony Mamaluke

The ECW run of Tony Mamaluke made him a respected competitor to have strong matches in the tag division as part of the Full Blooded Italians. Mamaluke signed with WCW to lead a faction with a similar gimmick joining Vito and Johnny the Bull.

WCW didn’t view Mamaluke as a game-changer and primarily used him in comedic moments. The run ended quickly with Vito and Johnny continuing without him. WWE hired Mamaluke in 2006 for the ECW relaunch by reuniting him with Nunzio, but they barely received time unless putting over bigger names.

3 Jerry Lynn

Ray Traylor vs Mr. JL

Jerry Lynn was one of the most underrated wrestlers of the ‘90s who struggled in WCW and WWE. The WCW tenure saw Lynn wearing a mask and competing under the name of Mr. JL. Despite having a few good performances in the cruiserweight division, Lynn lost most of the matches and never was able to break out.

ECW was the place where Lynn proved his talent by having a tremendous stint higher up the card. Lynn received a spot in WWE after ECW ended and even won the Light Heavyweight Championship. However, the lack of importance for Lynn’s title saw him falling into a jobber role until his release.

2 Marty Jannetty

Marty Jannetty in WWE

The Rockers had a great tag team run since fans loved the excitement from the work of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty. Michaels turning on Jannetty led to Shawn becoming one of the all-time greats and Jannetty flopping on his own.

WWE hired Marty on a few occasions with each ending as an enhancement talent. The weak WWE end saw Jannetty moving to WCW later in the decade. WCW rarely utilized Marty in any relevant storylines and made him a jobber instantly.

1 Virgil

Virgil in WWE

WWE made Virgil the sidekick of Ted DiBiase and utilized him in lower card roles outside of one push. Virgil getting revenge on DiBiase gave him some momentum, but WWE gave up when realizing the fans weren’t taking to him.

The rest of Virgil’s WWE run saw him becoming an enhancement talent. WCW hired Virgil in surprising fashion when looking for new members to join the New World Order. Virgil wrestled as Vincent and rarely won any matches to further cement his jobber status in wrestling.
