World Wrestling Entertainment and World Championship Wrestling have a very storied history alongside each other. At one point, both have been the largest wrestling organization in the world, and were in direct competition with each other. It was not until 2001 when WWE purchased WCW that a clear winner had emerged. While both promotions were thriving it was a good time to be a wrestling fan - something exciting was bound to happen each week on television, and the competition provided some high quality matches.

Throughout the time period where they were competing against each other, some other marvelous things happened in the wrestling industry. When comparing the two organizations side-by-side, there are some incredible statistics that come into vision. For instance - did Hulk Hogan have more success as WCW Champion or WWE Champion? The answer is WWE, but about 1,000 days. In their quest to put the other company out of business, both promotions had to be very unorthodox in their approach and in the interest of swerving viewers on a weekly basis, some bizarre things occurred and maintaining credible statistics was no longer a priority.

With such a deep history for both companies, there are many head-scratching mysteries that pop up when you dig deep enough. The real question is - just how weird can some of these statistics be?

Here are WWE and WCW Statistics That Make No Sense:

25 Both: Russo Held A World Championship Longer Than McMahon

via tumblr.com

When a promoter makes the decision to give themselves a run with their most decorated championship, it likely is not a good decision. During the Monday Night War, both Vince McMahon and Vince Russo booked themselves for a run with their respective World Championships. As most would guess, this was not well received by fans.

Despite how bad it looked to fans, this was still a measure of competition between the two promotions. When Vince McMahon won the WWE Championship, he relinquished it on the following Smackdown episode, making is reign only last four days.

Meanwhile, Vince Russo would not be outdone and only relinquished his Championship after seven days, making his reign longer than McMahon's. Despite this being a black mark on the history books, Vince Russo will always be able to hold this over McMahon.

24 WWE: Jinder Mahal Wrestled The Most SmackDown Matches In 2017

via wwe.com

When WWE executed their brand extension in 2016, they did a great job at separating the talent on their rosters. With talent like AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose leading the charge, and mid-card talent Dolph Ziggler, The Miz and Bray Wyatt waiting in the wings, Smackdown Live looked to be on top of the brand war.

That is why when Jinder Mahal emerged as WWE Champion in May 2017, it confused fans. Considering the over-whelming roster of talent that SmackDown Live had, Mahal came up on top with the most number of matches during the year of his Championship reign. With a total of 185 matches in 2017, Mahal topped over the rest of the roster.

Ask a wrestling fan 2012 if this would be the case for Mahal, and they would have laughed very loudly.

23 WWE: The Dudleys Never Won A WrestleMania Match

via wwe.com

Despite being widely considered as the greatest tag team in history, The Dudley Boyz have a very poor record at the Showcase of the Immortals. Their matches all consisted mainly of multi-team matches, all of which they did not come out on top of. While their WrestleMania X7 TLC II match is considered one of the best of all time, they are not known for winning it. Having also lost multi-team matches at WrestleMania's X8 and XX, as well as a match against The Usos at WrestleMania 32, they have never been able to pull out a win.

Following their last WWE run, they were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. While not officially retired, this signaled the end of their active WWE careers, and likely solidified their losing WrestleMania record.

22 WCW: Fall From 7.0 Ratings To 1.8

via wwe.com

The Monday Night War obviously featured WWE coming out on top. Following their purchase of WCW in 2001, they were able to put their competition to rest. However, it did not always appear that WWE were going to be the ones to win the war. At their height of popularity, WCW Nitro was pulling in massive 7.0 ratings for the company. However, WCW were not able to stay on top forever and quickly fell from grace.

In a matter of weeks, WCW's popularity in the wrestling world fell drastically. With a combination of WWE stepping up their game and WCW making a series of creative mistakes, their ratings fell a whopping six points. This fall from grace surmounted in millions of dollars lost for the company, and ultimately allowed them to be sold away.

21 WWE: Cody Rhodes & Hardcore Holly Have A Longer Tag Reign Than The Hardys

via youtube.com

Considering how celebrated The Hardys are as a tag team, most fans would think that they have one of the longest accumulated reigns as champions in WWE. However, despite how much fans love them, there are some surprising teams who have held the titles longer than they have.

Even though Matt and Jeff have held the World Tag Team Championships for six reigns at a combined 151 days, it has only landed them in the top 30% of total accumulated days. In fact, even some teams with surprising members who have surmised a larger amount of days. For instance, the team of Cody Rhodes and Hardcore Holly actually have the 23rd longest reign at 202 days in their one reign. Despite this, there will likely not be a "Best of Rhodes and Holly" DVD set anytime soon.

20 WCW: Hulk Hogan Held The World Championship For More Days Than Ric Flair

via tqn.com

For those that were WCW fans during their hey-day, when they picture the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, they likely picture it around the waist of The Nature Boy Ric Flair. While Flair is synonymous with WCW and a very decorated Champion, he is not the one who held the Big Gold Belt the longest.

While Flair does have the most World Championship reigns at eight for a total of 505 days in the record books, there is someone who held the belt for much longer. "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan surmounted a whopping 1,177 days with the Championship over his six reigns. Two of his reigns were also over 300 days, while Flair's longest reign with the title was only 202 in 1993.

19 WWE: The Divas Championship Was Only Defended Once At WrestleMania

via tumblr.com

Despite being an active championship in WWE for eight years, there are some very disappointing stats surrounding the Divas Championship. Prior to WWE introducing the "Women's Revolution", WWE was a very different landscape for women, and this stat proves it.

Even though very decorated wrestlers like Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix and Eve Torres holding the title through WrestleMania season, they never got the opportunity to defend it. Instead, AJ Lee was the only one to defend the Championship at WrestleMania XXX. The next time the title would be contested at WrestleMania would be when it was rechristened as the WWE Women's Championship, officially ending the "Divas era" in WWE.

18 WCW: Final Hardcore Champion Abandoned The Title

via tumblr.com

Wrestling promotions creating Hardcore Championships in the wake of ECW was very common in the late '90s. Both WWE and WCW jumped on the bandwagon, and created divisions for themselves as well. However, WCW's can certainly be tagged as the least successful.

Despite having legends like Terry Funk and Bam Bam Bigelow hold the title, the title's history has a very quick ending. When WCW wrestler Meng won the Hardcore Championship at Sin, his intentions were very clear to management. Only a week after winning the championship, he defected to WWE to return as his Haku character. No further mention of the title was made by WCW, and it was quietly deactivated.

17 WCW: Kevin Nash's Multiple Gimmick Flops

via tumblr.com

While Kevin Nash was very successful in both WWE and WCW throughout his career, he likely does not appreciate fans bringing up anything else from his past in wrestling.

Prior to becoming Big Daddy Cool or a member of The Outsiders, Nash was contracted to WCW. Instead of being portrayed as a 6'10" destroyer, he was given a string of silly gimmicks that it is surprising he was able to bounce back from. He went through stints as both Oz - a character based on The Wizard of Oz - and Vinnie Vegas - a monster-type character, who did not appear threatening at all. With so many strange gimmicks that did not rely on his toughness, it is surprising to believe that Nash would go to be a four-time WCW Heavyweight Champion.

16 Both: Randy Savage Always Lost To Flair & Hogan

via myspace.com

The landscape of professional wrestling in the 80s and 90s was an incredible time to be a wrestling fan. One of the biggest wrestlers to compete in both WWE and WCW was "Macho Man" Randy Savage, who was one of the few wrestlers to hold a World Championship in both promotions. However, it seemed that no matter where he became champion, there were some people he just could not beat.

Each time that Randy Savage held the World Championship, he always lost his belt to either Ric Flair or Hulk Hogan. Whether he was losing to Hogan at WrestleMania V or an episode of Nitro, or Ric Flair during PrimeTime Wrestling or SuperBrawl VI, he was never able to retain his championship when faced against these icons.

15 WWE: RAW Ratings Are Now As Bad As WCW's

via wwe.com

While many shots have been taken against WCW for losing the ratings war, it seems that WWE should not be throwing stones. Despite still being an incredibly profitable company, WWE has not been experiencing ratings successes lately. In July of 2018, RAW brought in its lowest rating ever of 2.4 million people. While there certainly many factors such as DVRs and the WWE Network make 2018 very different from 2001, this is an exceptionally poor number. Especially when it is compared to WCW, whose final episodes of Nitro only averaged 2.3 ratings.

Financially, WWE is much more stable than WCW was during its dying days, but seeing these numbers must still be a big shock to Vince McMahon.

14 WCW: World Championship Vacated Eight Times In 2000

via pinterest.com

While the prestige of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship ties back to the NWA World Championship, not all of its history is celebrated. During a time where WCW was on its decline, planning out their booking was not their strong suit. In fact, it seemed like most of the time they were flying by the seat of their pants. For instance, in the year 2000 the World Championship was vacated a total of six times - twice while held by Sid Vicious, and the rest by Bret Hart, Chris Benoit, Ric Flair and Vince Russo. By comparison, WWE has only vacated their WWE Championship five times since the year 2000.

The World Championship is supposed to be the most important belt to an organization, and by vacating it so often it diluted the importance to WCW fans.

13 WWE: Chairshot Free Since WrestleMania XXVII

via wwe.com

Following numerous studies on post-concussion syndrome in professional wrestlers, WWE decided to create strict sanctions on chair shots to the head in 2010. It has been over eight years since this was mandated, but there has been a featured chair shot to the head since. While not a statistic that WWE would likely promote, the chair shot took place at WrestleMania XXVII in the match between Triple H and The Undertaker.

During the match, Triple H used a chair against The Undertaker and surprised everyone by aiming for his head. While both men were fined, it was surprising to see this tactic used in WWE following their concussion policy.

12 WCW: nWo Reached 40+ Members

via tumblr.com

The New World Order was one of the greatest ideas that WCW ever came up with. However, they did also manage to run it in to the ground after long enough. The initial idea of a renegade group of former WWE employees invading WCW caught the attention of fans. Initially consisting of just Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, the nWo was a very important part of why WCW was on top of the ratings way. However, becoming a member of the group became much less special as time went on. In fact, the nWo once had over 40 members in their group, including lackluster wrestlers like Horace Hogan, Disco Inferno and Dennis Rodman. WCW had captured lightning in a bottle with the nWo, yet they relied on it far too much once it became popular.

11 WWE: No Pair Of New WrestleMania Main Eventers Since WrestleMania XIX

via wwe.com

Creating new wrestlers to main event the biggest event of the year should be WWE's goal on the Road to WrestleMania. While there have been some new faces in the main event scene over the years, it has been a long time since the main event spot was held by two brand new faces. There have been plenty of new faces introduced to the main event over the years, such as Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Daniel Bryan, there have not been two fresh faces since WrestleMania XIX. The last time that two brand new faces were in the main event on the grandest stage was Kurt Angle versus Brock Lesnar.

Is it possible WrestleMania 35 will break that trend? It's possible, with the WWE believed to be going with a women's main event.

10 WCW: Short Life Of Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships

One of the other bright spots in WCW's history was their Cruiserweight Division. With some of the greatest high-flyers from across the globe competing, WCW was able to highlight some great pure-wrestling throughout their time. In an effort to further highlight the division, a secondary title was created. The Cruiserweight Tag Team Championship tournament began in March 2001. However, it seemed that the company going out of business was not taken in to account when the championship was created. The titles were in circulation for less than two weeks before WCW was purchased by WWE. The titles then became deactivated.

9 WWE: Brock Lesnar's Bogus Championship Defenses

via wwe.com

The debate between the better World Champion is not set to end anytime soon. Brock Lesnar's 503-day reign as WWE Universal Champion was full of asterisks. The part-time wrestler only defended his title 10 times before he surpassed CM Punks 434 day record. However, Punk defended his WWE Championship 141 times in the same time period.

Wrestling purists will say that Punk certainly had a much better run as a "fighting Champion", while Lesnar's attraction status made him a lame-duck. Despite WWE pushing Lesnar as an unstoppable monster, he is seen about as often as Sasquatch or Big Foot. Lesnar recently started another reign as Universal Champion, and nothing's changed.

8 WCW: Goldberg's Real Record

via wwe.com

WCW's bolstering of Goldberg's record during his arrival in WCW is legendary for all the wrong reasons. In an attempt to ensure fans recognized Goldberg as a "big deal", they boosted his winning streak each week in an unlikely way. For instance, Goldberg would be announced one week as having 75 wins, but then the following week would have 85 wins without even wrestling another match in between.

Despite the numbers being constantly inflated, there is one important thing that WCW was wrong about. Goldberg's WCW record already had a loss on it before his Nitro debut. Goldberg lost to a wrestler named Chad Fortune in a match from the company's WCW Saturday Night tapings on July 24th, 1996. Considering his eventual draw for the promotion, WCW deliberately chose not to mention this loss, but Chad Fortune certainly won't forget it!

7 Both: 22 Of 30 1992 Royal Rumble Entrants Left For WCW

via wwe.com

Widely considered to be the most star-studded Royal Rumble match that the company has ever promoted, the 1992 Royal Rumble is special for a couple of reasons. It was the first time that the WWE Championship would be decided in the match and the first time a wrestler had lasted over an hour in the match. It is also notable that the participant list was not necessarily filled with WWE loyalists.

Out of the 30 entrants in that year's Royal Rumble, over 70% of them would go on to work for WCW before the company folded. Only wrestlers like The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and the aging Sgt. Slaughter were among those who stayed with WWE following this match.

6 WWE: Triple H's WrestleMania Record

It seems that The Game needs to spend a bit more time preparing for his matches on The Grandest Stage of Them All. Despite putting on some of the greatest matches in WrestleMania history, Triple H does not have a favorable record at the Show of Shows. While he does hold victories over opponents like Owen Hart, Randy Orton and Sting, he has still lost the majority of his matches. Following his defeat in the inter-gender tag team match this past year, his record currently sits at 9 wins and 11 losses. Not exactly the most favorable record for someone who considers themselves to be a King of Kings.

Perhaps he should be taking more advice from someone like Virgil - he is 2-0!
