Most people would presume that anytime WWE puts the World Championship on a wrestler, they are going to be set for a major push and strong booking. Considering they're holding the top prize in the entire company, that would make a lot of sense, but things don't always work out that way.

For some reason, throughout WWE history the company has booked several of their World Champions terribly, making their title runs be incredibly forgettable. In the end, all it served was to damage the wrestler in question and the legacy of the title itself which is a real shame. But which of the former World Champions did WWE book poorly?

10 Braun Strowman

Braun Strowman finally got his hands on the Universal Championship at WrestleMania, and despite the fact he had a fairly long run, he did very little of note with it. An average feud against both The Miz and John Morrison and then an over the top storyline with The Fiend just didn't work out.

The story between him and The Fiend just didn't require the Universal Championship being involved, and that really meant that the title run itself became quite forgettable as everything else was over the top.

9 Jack Swagger

Jack Swagger's run as World Heavyweight Champion wasn't short by any stretch of the imagination, but throughout his run, he wasn't booked dominantly. Swagger held the title for 82 days overall, but he struggled to put together any meaningful feuds during that period.

Swagger was never made to feel like a worthy champion throughout the entire time he held the belt. Instead, he just felt like an experimental champion and that stopped him from really kicking on in the main event scene after this point.

8 Goldberg

Considering how Goldberg has always been one of the most dominant wrestlers of all time, it is surprising to see that he had a poor run as World Champion. But the way he was booked during his initial World Title reign in WWE really was dreadful.

When WWE finally pulled the trigger on him as champion, his run was spent focusing on Triple H and the bounty he had on Goldberg. Things just never clicked and Goldberg wasn't the ass-kicking machine he should have been.

7 Bray Wyatt

Bray Wyatt

As The Fiend, Bray Wyatt has thrived as a World Champion and put together a solid run. However, his first spell with the WWE Championship wasn't a good one, holding the title from Elimination Chamber to WrestleMania 33.

The run was very short and Orton just dominated the limelight throughout this one. The fact that Wyatt failed to overcome his first hurdle as a champion just showcased why nobody cared about the title run in the first place.

6 Jeff Hardy

Edge v Jeff Hardy Royal Rumble 2009 Cropped

Jeff Hardy finally winning the WWE Championship was a massive deal in WWE and should have led to a huge babyface run. Instead, he held it to the next PPV when Matt Hardy appeared and screwed his brother, helping his bitter enemy Edge in the process.

The entire time he was champion Jeff suffered 'attacks' from his brother and instead of making him look like the number one wrestler on the roster, Jeff was made to appear very weak.

5 Randy Orton

That's right, despite the fact that he is one of the most decorated World Champions of all time, his original run with the World Heavyweight Championship was poorly booked. He may have been the youngest man to ever win the gold, but that didn't help him.

He was champion for just one month, dropping it at the following PPV in what was just used as a moment to build Triple H, at Orton's expense.

4 Ezekiel Jackson

While the ECW Championship was never taken overly seriously during the WWE era of the company, every title run was better than Ezekiel Jackson's. His run was utterly pointless as he won the title on the final episode of WWE's ECW.

The entire situation made zero sense, as he was never going to become a great champion as the title was retired. It didn't add to the legacy of the title or Jackson's career because this is something most people have forgotten all about.

3 Sheamus

The Celtic Warrior has held the WWE Championship on multiple occasions, and most times he wasn't booked well. The first time was very early into his career and it just led to a brief reign where he was never treated as the main star with John Cena's shadow looming.

Another run was sadly even worse. Cashing in the Money in the Bank on Roman Reigns, it was obvious this was just a delay tactic to keep the belt away from the Big Dog for a brief period, and despite being champion, he was booked incredibly poorly throughout his run.

2 Rey Mysterio

It was clear WWE wanted Rey Mysterio to be the ultimate underdog when he captured the World Title at WrestleMania 22, but the company took things too far. During his time as champion, Mysterio was constantly defeated which just made him look terrible.

He should have been given a few plucky wins that he had to really earn, but WWE opted to have him lose and then squeak by to defend the title, which didn't really work with his babyface gimmick.

1 Kane

One of the most dominant monsters in the history of professional wrestling, the fact that Kane was a terribly booked World Champion is a huge shame. While he did eventually get a solid run, his first time as WWE Champion was an example of a poor booking decision.

He won the title from Steve Austin at the 1998 King of the Ring event. However, WWE clearly hadn't thought this through, because the next night on Raw he lost the title back to Austin, which didn't do the Big Red Monster any favors at all.
