It is very important when a championship falls into the right hands. Sadly, on numerous occasions, WWE has given a title to the wrong person, and it desperately needs rescuing. A championship's lineage can be tarnished when the holder of the title has a lackluster reign.

However, it has been proven time and time again that a championship can be restored to its former glories once the right wrestler, up to the task, has a meaningful reign. Not just world championships but the midcard and female championships have suffered from poor rivalries and reigns, only to be saved by someone.

10 AJ Lee - Divas Championship

AJ Lee Divas Championship

Women's wrestling was in a sad state of affairs in the early 2010s. The Divas Championship became a laughing stock until AJ Lee's hands grasped the title. The diminutive AJ was way ahead of her time but brought prestige to the Divas Championship.

Regardless of whether she was a face or a heel, fans loved AJ. She left a lasting impression on the business and became one of the top females who wasn't afraid to speak her mind. Thankfully, AJ's reign lasted 295 days which is the second-longest in Divas Championship history.

9 Cody Rhodes - Intercontinental Championship

Cody 2011

Cody Rhodes unveiled the new Intercontinental Championship at Hell in a Cell 2011. The new title was reminiscent of the old title, which the likes of Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon wore proudly. The Intercontinental Championship was struggling with the likes of Wade Barrett and Ezekiel Jackson having dismal reigns before Cody got his hands on the strap.

Cody's a two-time Intercontinental Champion but his first reign lasted over 200 days. Cody was a great Intercontinental Champion but it is a shame that WWE did not view him as a main eventer. Nonetheless, Cody is currently in AEW and is showing the world how good of a competitor he is.

8 Shawn Michaels - WWE Championship

HBK 1996

The WWE was heading into a new direction in the mid-90s and none other than Shawn Michaels spearheaded the New Generation Era. At WrestleMania XII, HBK finally clinched the WWE Championship from Bret Hart in a sublime Iron Man match.

Of course, Bret is a great WWE Champion but it was time for someone else at the helm. Michaels became the undisputed top babyface in 1996 and certainly thrived as WWE Champion. Shawn's maiden WWE Championship reign lasted eight months, and he elevated stars like Mankind to main event level status.

7 Bayley - Smackdown Women's Championship

Bayley Smackdown Women's Champion

No one has benefitted from a heel turn in recent years more than Bayley. Bayley's face character began to go stale and a change was desperately needed to remain relevant. Bayley became serious and she even cut her hair and became a two-time Smackdown Women's Champion.

The Smackdown Women's Championship needed some stability and Bayley did just that. Her reign was exceptional and enjoyable with Sasha Banks by her side. Bayley's mic skills improved drastically but she did have some poor matches with Lacey Evans, Tamina, and Nikki Cross. Nonetheless, her record-breaking reign at 380 days came to an end by Sasha, but Bayley deserves a lot of credit for elevating the title to new heights.

6 CM Punk - WWE Championship

Punk WWE Champion

CM Punk was at the peak of his powers as a WWE superstar in 2011. The Summer of Punk saw Punk clinch his maiden WWE Championship from John Cena in front of a partisan crowd in Chicago at Money in the Bank. However, The Second City Saint dropped the title prematurely to Alberto Del Rio at SummerSlam.

Punk finally regained the WWE Championship from Del Rio at the 2011 Survivor Series. His 434-day reign as WWE champion was outstanding. Punk had some great matches with Chris Jericho and Daniel Bryan in 2012, and he turned heel in the summer with Paul Heyman accompanying him to the ring.

5 Becky Lynch - Raw Women's Championship

The Man

Becky Lynch made history at WrestleMania 35 when she defeated Ronda Rousey and Charlotte Flair in the first-ever women's WrestleMania main event. The Man captured both the Raw and Smackdown Women's Titles, and was dubbed "Becky Two Belts."

Like Bayley, Becky benefitted from a turn and she never looked back. Lynch dropped the Smackdown Women's Title quickly but she continued to grow as the Raw Women's Champion. Becky had a lackluster feud with Lacey Evans for the majority of the summer but her matches improved with the likes of Sasha Banks and Asuka. Nonetheless, Becky held the title for a record 398 days with her reign ending in the spring of 2020 due to her pregnancy.

4 Edge - World Heavyweight Championship

Edge WHC

No one had a bigger impact on the World Heavyweight Championship than Edge. The Rated-R Superstar is a record seven-time champion with the majority of his reigns being short. Unfortunately, injuries have been a major contributing factor for Edge's brief reigns as World Heavyweight Champion.

However, The Master Psychologist brought instant credibility to the title and had some incredible matches with The Undertaker and John Cena over it. Edge ensured this title was the established world title for Smackdown in the late 2000s, and his work as a world champion made him hated.

3 John Cena - WWE Championship

Cena 2005

John Cena's first year as WWE Champion was one of the best first-time world championship reigns in history. WWE did not rush Cena's ascension but his confidence grew as the United States Champion over on Smackdown. JBL's 280-day reign as WWE Champion had run its course and Cena finally dethroned the self-made millionaire at WrestleMania 21 to capture his first WWE Championship.

Big Match John became the face of the company when he moved to Monday Night Raw in the summer of 2005. His WWE Championship bouts with legends such as Chris Jericho and Kurt Angle played a huge role to further enhance the development of Cena as a major star.

2 The Miz - Intercontinental Championship

The Miz Intercontinental Champion 2016 Cropped

The Intercontinental Championship is traditionally the workhorse title but suffered in some parts of the 2010s. However, that all changed once The Miz won the Intercontinental Championship in 2016 and 2017 with his wife Maryse by his side. The Awesome One brought relevancy back to the title.

Miz carried the gold with pride and oozed charisma as the Intercontinental Champion. His feuds with Dolph Ziggler and Dean Ambrose over the title were the standout moments of his exceptional reigns. The Hollywood A-Lister is an eight-time Intercontinental Champion, one behind Chris Jericho's record of nine. Whether Miz breaks the record or not, he will certainly go down in history as one of the greatest Intercontinental Champions.

1 Roman Reigns - Universal Championship

The Big Dog

Since its inception in 2016, the Universal Championship has struggled for consistency. A part-timer like Goldberg has two reigns as champion, ending the likes of current stars Kevin Owens and Bray Wyatt's runs, who were at the height of their reigns. However, Roman Reigns is in his second reign as Universal Champion. Roman never lost the title in the first place as he had to relinquish the title due to his diagnosis of Leukemia.

The Tribal Chief is the top heel on Smackdown aligning with Paul Heyman, doing the unthinkable with Heyman becoming his manager. Rightfully, Roman took the gold from Bray Wyatt in a triple threat match also involving former champion Braun Strowman at Payback 2020. Roman is at the best stage of his WWE career, and his promos have improved immensely. Furthermore, feuding with his cousin Jey Uso at Clash of Champions and Hell in a Cell, were surprisingly good matches but Roman is going to move on to bigger and better which can certainly boost the Universal Championship.
