Bray Wyatt and Brock Lesnar are two of the biggest stars and most popular names in WWE today. They have both experienced ups, downs, and time away from the company, but they have each retained their reputations as being notable wrestlers with large fanbases. Back in 2016, the two men actually feuded with one another, though fans would be forgiven if they had either forgotten all about it, or else didn’t even know it had happened. That is due to it being a brief and uninspiring feud which didn’t live up to billing given who was involved, which is certainly a shame when looking back.

The Wyatt Family Eliminated Brock Lesnar From The Royal Rumble

After nearly three years on WWE’s main roster, Bray Wyatt’s stock had fallen a little by the time 2016 rolled around. Following two big WrestleMania losses to legends such as John Cena and The Undertaker, fans agreed that Wyatt needed a big WrestleMania victory to get his career back on track, especially since he was still such a captivating performer. At the 2016 Royal Rumble event, it seemed to become clear as to who his next major opponent would be, though it didn’t bode well for him trying to get a big victory at the Showcase of the Immortals.

The Wyatt Family made their presence known in the Royal Rumble match, with Erick Rowan, Luke Harper, and Braun Strowman dominating the field. However, when Brock Lesnar made his entrance at the number 23 position, he cleaned out the Wyatt Family. Following some more domination, it was Bray Wyatt’s time to emerge. Standing in the ring was Lesnar, who faced off with Wyatt. Despite being eliminated already, the Wyatt Family returned to the ring to take down Lesnar. Wyatt then laid him out with a Sister Abigail, with his minions doing the dirty work of eliminating him from the match.

This did feel like a cheap way to begin a feud, with it being an illogical use of the Wyatt Family. It didn’t make sense for them to interfere to just eliminate Lesnar, rather than to help Wyatt win the entire match. Either way though, the Road to WrestleMania looked crystal clear, with Lesnar no doubt wanting his revenge on those who cost him the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

The Blow-Off Match Between Bray Wyatt And Brock Lesnar Came At WWE Roadblock

WWE began turning the wheel towards an encounter down the line, although things didn’t get very far. Lesnar retained some focus on the World Title, competing against Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns at the Fastlane PPV in a number one contenders bout, though there was expectation that once that match was over, Lesnar would return to Wyatt. Following this match, Lesnar and Wyatt were surprisingly scheduled for a match at the Roadblock event, which was added into WWE’s calendar. With this being an expected WrestleMania clash, this was a weird announcement.

When the event came around, the match was turned into a 2-on-1 Handicap Match due to Wyatt being injured, with Luke Harper teaming up with Wyatt. It saw Lesnar beat down Harper for an extended period, all the while Wyatt stood on the outside and watched. Lesnar won the match with ease. The booking was a little odd, as it should have just been a singles match if Wyatt was to not get involved, but it did leave the door open for the next chapter, with Lesnar waiting to get his hands on Wyatt.

WWE Dropped Bray Wyatt Vs Brock Lesnar Out Of Nowhere

Dean Ambrose’s surge in popularity in 2016 led to WWE having to change their plans, in addition to the uncertainty for Wyatt's status come WrestleMania. With Ambrose not finding himself in the main title picture, WWE decided to switch it up and begin a rivalry between Ambrose and Lesnar. It was instantly clear that this had more interest than the rivalry between Wyatt and Lesnar, which had zero storyline or momentum. The feud didn’t finish up with a good match, but the build was strong at the very least.

For Wyatt, he and his faction did end up at WrestleMania, though it was in a segment where they interrupted The Rock, got humiliated, and then received a beating from The Rock and a returning John Cena. This was a severe drop from a big blockbuster bout against Lesnar, although with Lesnar’s dominance at the time, there was very little hope that the feud or resulting match would do Wyatt any favors anyway. With the pair now both in WWE, there is a chance that this feud is revisited and done correctly, but it would still likely be for the best if they were kept firmly apart. Their chemistry in 2016 wasn’t all that great, and the feud remains to be one of the more underwhelming and forgettable in history.
