Most fans remember The Patriot for his small program with Bret Hart. WWE had Bret defend the WWE Championship against The Patriot in between his feuds with The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels back in 1997. WWE used the patriotic character to combat Bret’s anti-American gimmick.

8 Homophobic Exchange With D-Generation X

Things started to get personal between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels by the fall of 1997. Triple H joined the picture when Michaels formed D-Generation X with his closest WWE friend to give him an advantage against Bret and the Hart Foundation.

WWE foolishly made them all exchange in homophobic insults between Hart and DX. Bret used a slur to describe Michaels and Triple H before bragging about how much money he made. Future interviews saw Hart revealing he didn’t feel comfortable with this creative and regretted it.

WWE placed Bret Hart into a long feud with Jerry Lawler that didn’t get a proper culmination in the first version. Survivor Series 1993 was meant to feature a match of Bret and his brothers facing Jerry Lawler and his mysterious masked Knights.

However, Lawler getting into legal trouble removed him from WWE television and placed Shawn Michaels in the match instead. This was a strange match since Michaels had to feign chemistry with characters made to be associated with Lawler.

PCO is currently wrestling with a unique gimmick in his later years, but he was part of the New Generation Era for WWE as Jean-Pierre Lafitte. WWE tried to find new rivals for Bret Hart when placing talents like Lafitte in that role.

The storyline was a bit out there when Lafitte started stealing the sunglasses that Bret gave to young fan sitting ringside. The Nation of Domination was used in a terrible way to add to the Shawn Michaels vs Bret Hart feud. An overlooked controversial segment featured the Nation members finding their locker room vandalized with offensive comments and a pro-Canada message.

This led to the Nation obviously blaming Bret and the Hart Foundation to take the fight to them. WWE made it obvious that Michaels and D-Generation X did this to frame Hart. However, it would come off as an insensitive from every angle looking back today.

There were few rivalries as bitter and personal as Bret Hart vs Steve Austin in the New Generation Era. WWE placed them together and found magical chemistry that set up the eventual legendary submission match at WrestleMania 13.

Bret received a WWE Championship match on Raw against Sycho Sid in a steel cage match a few weeks before the show. Austin shockingly tried to help his most hated rival Hart win, so their match could be for the title. The Undertaker came out to do the same for his WM opponent Sid, who did retain the gold.

WWE told a great story with the infamous double turn of Bret Hart and Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13. A forgotten part of the story came before the main event of The Undertaker vs Sycho Sid for the WWE Championship later in the night.

Hart made his way to the ring to huge jeers and cut a heel promo before the match demanding his title shot. Sid attacked Bret to a huge cheer, which also was a bit odd as a fellow heel. It caused Hart to head to the back as Undertaker won a clean main event to become the new champ.
