Despite having no direct affiliation with a major or even a minor wrestling promotion, Dark Side of the Ring has cut out a rather sizable niche for itself since debuting in 2019. Vice took a chance on the docuseries that has covered some of the darker and more controversial corners of the industry and has allowed it to grow in popularity and size over the course of its first three seasons.

WWE And Dark Side Of The Ring

Since WWE has been responsible for the lion's share of everything that has happened in wrestling for the past 35 years, a large chunk of the subjects covered on Dark Side have been rooted in WWE's history. A number of wrestling personalities have appeared on the show, but WWE has had no part in its creation. Makes sense considering the way in which some of WWE's past has been framed through the eyes of the show's creators.

That's why news WWE and Dark Side's creators Jason Eisener and Evan Husney are working together on a new show comes as a pretty big surprise. That's according to the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Dave Meltzer writes the two entities have teamed up to create a new series for Vice that will focus on the history of wrestling's territories.

Jim Ross And The Rock Are Involved

This appears to be the same project Jim Ross has revealed he is working on as both he and The Rock's production company Seven Bucks are working on the new show too. That's a lot of different people from a few different walks of wrestling life all working under one umbrella. With so many people working on the project, some of which will have lived through the territory era, the new show might well be pretty great.

News of this new project might explain why Vice is yet to pick up Dark Side of the Ring for a fourth season. Odds are this project will be taking precedent for the time being, especially with WWE and The Rock involved. It's also worth nothing JR recently said he wouldn't be appearing on Dark Side should the show continue due to the way in which some of the episodes have been edited. It's unclear how much each of the groups and people mentioned will be contributing to the show. It's entirely possible JR and the Dark Side creators won't cross paths when piecing together this new project.
