The Legion of Doom aka the Road Warriors are still respected in the conversation of the greatest tag team in wrestling history. Hawk and Animal found magical chemistry that created a special duo that delivered a legacy lasting for decades. Other talents would join the act at different versions of the act in WWE.

The Road Warriors' chapter of their careers thrived in multiple companies, but WWE wanted them to change their names to the Legion of Doom. Animal and Hawk had quite a few fascinating moments throughout the years along with their acquaintances. The following memories about the LOD in WWE will make fans appreciate their run even more.

10 New Age Outlaws First United With DX Against Them

DX Vs Legion Of Doom

Shawn Michaels and the New Age Outlaws were technically never in D-Generation X at the same time unless counting the reunion moments. That makes it more fascinating that they were on the same page along with Triple H and Chyna for one night.

The Legion of Doom faced Michaels and Triple H in a massive match for Raw at the time. However, it ended with the New Age Outlaws interfering to help DX deliver a beat down on LOD. Road Dogg and Billy Gunn showed chemistry with DX, but they mainly got involved due to their own feud with Animal and Hawk.

9 Name Change Was Due To Ultimate Warrior Timing

Many fans are still curious about why WWE would change the name of an act so popular as the Road Warriors going back to their other promotions. Every company but WWE used the Road Warriors name for Hawk and Animal once they adopted it as their own.

WWE wanted to have the licensing rights to the Legion of Doom name, but they also didn’t want a tie in with the Ultimate Warrior. The use of the warrior name was already part of a popular top singles star, so Vince McMahon pivoted to a name change for Hawk and Animal.

8 Paul Ellering Rejoined Them Later Into Act

LOD And Rocco

The legendary manager Paul Ellering has a weird history with WWE that featured some Legion of Doom moments. WWE first didn’t want to add Ellering when signing Animal and Hawk to continue their tag run since Vince McMahon was always hot and cold with how he viewed managers.

A couple of years of being in WWE saw LOD finally getting Ellering back as his manager, but it turned into a negative when he had a puppet with him. Hawk left WWE due to this gimmick upsetting him. WWE ran into the same issues when Vince didn’t want Ellering with the Authors of Pain after their NXT run together.

7 WWE Tried To Replace Hawk With Crush

Hawk was mad enough about being booked to have a puppet as part of their act. WWE still had Animal under contract and wanted him to complete the rest of his contracted dates. Crush ended up having a tag run with Animal for a few weeks.

WWE had some hope that chemistry would form between the two and convince Animal to stick with them. Paul Ellering even joined the act as their manager, but it didn’t work long term. Both men moved into singles roles until Animal left to reunite with Hawk after his contract expired.

6 Attacked Pat Patterson & Gerald Brisco For Impersonating Them

Pat Patterson & Gerald Brisco

Many fans view the storyline with Droz and Hawk falling off the titan tron as the final thing the Legion of Doom did in WWE, but they had a few more forgotten moments. One segment featured Hawk and Animal attacking Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco of all people backstage.

WWE booked Brisco and Patterson to impersonate the Legion of Doom during a match against Shane McMahon since they were becoming comedic characters. Hawk and Animal attacked them to get revenge, but it didn’t lead to anything else.

5 Sunny Only Lasted A Few Months With Them

LOD 2000

Another interesting twist for the Legion of Doom story to try to make them relevant again featured Sunny getting added as their manager. LOD 2000 was the revamped name for Animal and Hawk when returning from an absence with Sunny at WrestleMania 15.

The changes to their gear and the addition of a popular manager were hoped to improve their standing with the audience after some cold booking. Sunny having issues with WWE led to this run ending short before they could hit their potential together.

4 Alliance With Ahmed Johnson

Ahmed Johnson, & The Legion Of Doom vs The Nation Of Domination

The Legion of Doom joined a couple of noteworthy feuds between other relevant wrestlers. Ahmed Johnson needed some partners to even the odds against the Nation of Domination since Faarooq always had interference in his matches.

WWE booked various six-man tag matches with Johnson and the Legion of Doom teaming up. WrestleMania 13 was the peak of their tag run having the second best match of the night defeating the Nation in a Chicago Street Fight.

3 New Age Outlaws Shaved Hawk's Head

New Age Outlaws LOD

The New Age Outlaws became a highly successful tag team partially thanks to the feud with the Legion of Doom. Most wrestling historians would agree that Hawn and Animal were booked a little weaker in WWE compared to other promotions.

However, they were still the most respected face tag team all the way into the earliest signs of the Attitude Era. The New Age Outlaws shaving Hawk’s mohawk was a huge moment that made fans take them seriously before they joined D-Generation X and became the top team.

2 Hawk No-Sold RVD & Kane's Finisher In Final Return Match

Kane & Rob Van Dam World Tag Team Champions Cropped

WWE brought back the Legion of Doom for an episode of Raw in 2003. Rob Van Dam and Kane were the most over team looking to defend their tag titles when the crowd popped huge for Animal and Hawk making a shocking appearance.

The match had the crowd invested from start to finish, but the ending led to some heat for the Legion of Doom. Hawk took the pin after Kane and RVD hit their finishers to lose the match. However, he stood right up after the count to the clear confusion and anger from Kane during their celebration.

1 They Were Part Of The Canada Vs America Storyline

Hart Foundation v Goldust, Shamrock, Austin & LOD Canadian Stampede 1997 Cropped

Bret Hart leading the Hart Foundation to feud with Steve Austin turned into a bigger USA vs Canada feud. The Hart Foundation running down the United States every week led to some of the face wrestlers from the company standing up to them.

Most fans view the infamous In Your House: Canadian Stampede main event as the peak of the feud. The Legion of Doom joined Austin, Goldust and Ken Shamrock in a losing effort to the Hart Foundation. WWE trusted Animal and Hawk’s popularity to make them the tag team representative.
