Throughout WWE history, there were tons of matches that get put together, and normally they look great on paper and then deliver in the ring. That's because they're typically between top talents who have been built as rivals, but occasionally there are matches that come together that puzzle people.

Fans will look at them and pre-judge them, expecting them to be terrible before they even happen, simply because of the people involved. However, these are the types of encounters that often end up surprising fans, being far better than they have any right to be as the wrestlers involved step it up to entertain fans.

9 The Miz vs. Logan Paul (SummerSlam, 2022)

Anytime a celebrity is involved in a wrestling match fans instantly question things because they are not professional wrestlers who have the skills to put on a high-standard of action. That is why fans were worried at SummerSlam 2022, particularly because The Miz is not seen as the flashiest of wrestlers.

However, he and Logan Paul told a great story in their match, with Miz being an ideal heel that was able to put together a smart story as Paul brought the energy and high-flying moments with big spots to create an entertaining clash that fans enjoyed.

8 Shane McMahon Vs. AJ Styles (WrestleMania 33)

On paper, the idea of Shane McMahon and AJ Styles competing against each other didn't sound like the best idea. They are two very different wrestlers, with Styles being seen as a technical star while Shane is best known for big spots and bumps, which don't normally come together well.

The fact it was a WrestleMania encounter made fans question the situation even more, however it came together perfectly. Both men stepped up massively here and worked together to put on a clinic which was highly entertaining, with mat-based wrestling to start building up to some bigger spots.

7 Big Show vs. Floyd Mayweather (WrestleMania 24)

Floyd Mayweather is one of the biggest sports stars in history, so fans always knew that he would be able to entertain inside the ring. However, when he was put up against Big Show there was immediately question marks based on huge size difference between the two men.

Despite that they were able to work around it, using Mayweather's security team, knuckle dusters and other weapons, he was able to make up the difference. It led to an engaging encounter between the two of them that was a lot of fun to watch, and felt worthy of being a WrestleMania encounter.

6 Kurt Angle & Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H & Stephanie McMahon (WrestleMania 34)

This match had everything going against it considering it featured two wrestlers who were past their prime and working on a part-time basis inside the ring, one was a non-wrestler in Stephanie McMahon, while the other was Ronda Rousey making her in-ring debut. Despite that, it ended up being the match of the night on a stacked WrestleMania card.

Ronda was fantastic and adapted to the wrestling world immediately, while the rest of the competitors played their part in piecing together in an entertaining story. The heels cut things off at the right time and built the heat, while Rousey and Angle came into things at the right time to wow audiences.

5 The Miz & John Morrison vs. Damian Priest & Bad Bunny (WrestleMania 37)

Another WrestleMania tag team match that fans weren't sure about heading in was this one, as Bad Bunny was a complete unknown when it came to his in-ring ability. However, the musician worked hard and put in one of the greatest celebrity performances in the history of the business.

While everyone else was enjoyable to watch, their performances were all overwhelmed by what Bad Bunny was able to put together. He bust out moves that even some experienced stars were not capable of, which was fantastic to see.

4 Chris Jericho vs. Ricky Steamboat (Backlash, 2009)

Everyone knows that Ricky Steamboat is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, but when he was competing against Chris Jericho in 2009 he was far past his prime and had long since been retired from the business. Because of that, fans were not sure what to expect from the singles match he had against Chris Jericho.

Despite the fact that Steamboat was past his prime he was able to step up and put on a classic against Jericho with the two of them working an enjoyable singles match against each other.

3 Pat McAfee vs. Adam Cole (NXT Takeover: XXX)

Nowadays fans know that they can expect an entertaining match from Pat McAfee, but before making his in-ring debut against Adam Cole that wasn't the case. On top of that, NXT Takeover events typically brought a certain level of wrestling with high-quality back and forth bouts being expected from these shows.

That added a lot of pressure to the former NFL star, but McAfee knocked it out of the park and held his own against Cole in a lengthy singles encounter. There were no bells and whistles here like in other celebrity matches, and instead McAfee put on a fantastic match with Cole that was better than anyone expected.

2 Sami Zayn vs. Johnny Knoxville (WrestleMania 38)

Sami Zayn facing Johnny Knoxville had no right to be an entertaining encounter given the fact that the "Jackass" star had no in-ring qualities. However, they ended up creating an exceptional match that tapped into the fact there were no rules, adding lots of hilarious spots to entertain the fans.

Both men took a beating in this one with some huge bumps being involved as all of Knoxville's friends appeared to add to it. There was also a lot of psychology in this one, with Zayn carrying his opponent to a classic match.

1 Hornswoggle vs. El Torito (Extreme Rules, 2014)

This match was placed onto the pre-show of the 2014 Extreme Rules event, and because El Torito and Hornswoggle were mainly presented as comedic characters in WWE fans had very low expectations. This being branded as a 'WeeLC' match didn't help matters, as fans didn't know what it would be like.

However, the two men put together a brilliant encounter that was far better than anyone thought it would have been. They took big bumps, fitting in a ton of action in the time they were given, which had the entire WWE Universe going wild from start to finish.
