WrestleMania 9 felt refreshing for any fans that were growing tired of Hulk Hogan. It was the first WrestleMania event in five years that didn’t have Hogan advertised for the main event. Bret Hart defending the WWE Championship against Yokozuna showed two new stars in a top spot.

Hogan’s political influence and WWE’s reliance on him played out in the most shocking fashion this night. Yokozuna defeating Bret somehow culminated with Hogan coming out and demanding a title shot. WWE fans felt like the heel era of Brock Lesnar dominating the world title picture ended at WrestleMania 35. Seth Rollins defeating Brock ended his reign and saw a full-time face champ now representing the Raw brand.

WWE booked their first major match at Survivor Series 2000 to main event over the world title. However, there wasn’t an actual finish to the match since it turned into a backstage brawl. Austin trapping Triple H in a car and dropping it from a forklift was truly shocking at the time.

The Great American Bash 2004 proved that not every shocking ending is going to be well received. WWE booked an odd match that featured Paul Bearer trapped in a concrete crypt and The Undertaker having to defeat the Dudley Boyz to free him.

WWE showed the best scenario for a PPV ending in shocking fashion when Brock Lesnar faced Goldberg at Survivor Series 2016. Everyone expected Brock to defeat Goldberg since he became the most protected top star in many years.

However, WWE did go for the shocking moment when Goldberg speared Lesnar to start the match and defeated him in just under 90 seconds. The crowd erupted in shock since no one saw it coming, and it played into Goldberg’s old character of squashing the competition.

WWE delivered a polarizing finish due to wanting that shocking reaction to close the show. Austin won thanks to his former enemy Vince McMahon helping him to show he would truly do anything to become WWE Champion again.
