A match that was rumored for The Royal Rumble appears to now be official. WWE has announced that a "Pitch Black" match will come to the premium live event sponsored by Mountain Dew and its flavored soda. Pitch Black is a Mountain Dew flavor first released for the Halloween season of 2004. It had many limited-time releases and eventually became a permanent flavor. It had been speculated a few weeks ago that this was an idea WWE might be considering, specifically with the bout involving Bray Wyatt in what might be his first match back since returning to WWE. That's not confirmed in this promotional video the company shared on its social media pages Monday, but it does make sense and the video appears to be linked to a Wyatt return. The video features a shadowing figure and reads "anything can happen" and hints the lights will presumably be turned off as superstars wrestle in the ring.

This match appears to also be a sponsorship match as the name of the contest matches the name of the Mountain Dew product. This wouldn't be the first time WWE worked a bout into a marketing partnership. Not too long ago, they did a zombie match between The Miz and Damian Priest in connection with Dave Bautista's Army of The Dead film on Netflix. That match wasn't well received so the hope is this one will go over much better with the WWE Universe.

Another Gimmick Match For the Rumble

The event already has WWE's most infamous gimmick match on the card as 30 men and 30 women will be trying to outlast the other Superstars to get a shot at a titleholder of their choosing at WrestleMania. It is likely that this match will be featured outside of the Rumble match itself.
